Wow, found this second one and it could be that Joseph had a second child besides his first and only son Joseph. It's the second one down from the left under Joseph Chartrand and Catherine Martin.

I hope someone is still keeping an eye on this post, it has been years since anyone has replied. Are you related to the people in your previous post? If so, we may have a connection. I am looking for information on vital Champagne and Elisabeth Morin who had a son Telesphore Champagne. Telesphore married Lumina Baillargeon in April of 1882. I am not sure what the BMS mentioned in your last post stands for. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Bacon Family of Berthier/Berthierville/Joliette Québec

I'm a descendant of Jean Gregoire Bacon (1850-1936) who came to Vermont from Joliette / Berthierville in Québec Canada. I've done a huge amount of work on his family, translating documents from French. His father was Jean Baptiste Bacon (1804 – 1889), son of Gilles Marie Bacon (1765 – 1832), son of Prisque Bacon (1725 – 1807), etc.

Hoping to find, perhaps, relatives of this branch of the Bacon family still living in Québec. My dream is to find a photograph of my great-grandmother Delia Rosanna Bacon who died (along with her mother Cordelia Olivier) during the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918.

Thanks!

Merci !
Guilbeault (Infant Twin #42) George
Guilbeault (Infant Twin #43) Mariana
Births: 29 July 1894
Parents: George Guilbeault (b. 1857) and Maria-Louise Coutu (b. 1863) Canadian V.R., 1894 Drouin Collection

1901 Canadian census does not list little George, born 29 July 1894, but his twin sister, Mariana, is on the census. Question: What happened to infant George? I am unable to locate him anywhere. Perhaps there was a complication during his birth? Would appreciate assistance in locating him, or confirming what happened to him. Thank you.

This is what I know about my GGGrandfather. He came from the Upper Prov of Canada (as listed on one of his census records). He was French Canadian and a Catholic. His father's name was Joseph and that is all that I know about his family prior to coming to the US. He migrated to Marquette County, Michigan in 1862 and his last name was Dostollere on those records. He married Emma Benedict on Feb 13, 1865 in Marquette County, MI. Her name was listed as Amey Benedict on their marriage record and his name was Alfred Destalles. I have the census record in 1870 in Ishpeming, Michigan, but could not find them on the 1880 census. They moved to North Dakota and the first record I have of them is a land record in 1886. They lived in Bottineau County, ND until they died. I have the census records between 1900 and 1920. Alfred died on November 11, 1920 and is buried in Tarsus Cemetery in Bottineau, County, ND. Some of the names I found on records for him are: Dostollere, Destalles, Distelle, Dostillirre, Dostollirre, Dosteller, Distiller, Disteller, Disteler, Destaller, Destillis. His name was very close to the Dostaler family in Berthier and their son Alfred has the same birthdate as my GGGrandfather. I found the other Alfred until 1861 in Canada, but I couldn't find a marriage record or a death record for him in Canada so I thought he was a likely candidate. This is all that I know.

Thanks very much,
Joanne

Wow - I wasn't expecting that! Thanks for all of that information. I wasn't successful in finding the Alfred born on Nov 2, 1843 after the 1861 census - have you seen him in Canada after that time? I think he is my GGGrandfather and he migrated to Michigan after that census and then moved on to North Dakota. Do you know what old newspapers I should look up for obituaries in Saint Cuthbert or the Trois Rivieres area to see if he is mentioned as a family member? If I can find an obit that mentions him living in MI or ND, then I will feel that is the proof I need that he is my ancestor.

Thanks again for all of your help!!
Joanne

Sorry - I have one more question for Claire about the information you sent. In your research you show the son Joseph dying as an infant in 1837. I show him being born as Joseph Casabon dit Dostalere in 1842 (one year older than Alfred. He is listed on the 1852 census with the family. Were there two sons named Joseph? The one I have lived into adulthood and married a woman named Catherine and had several children. This is from the 1881 Trois-Rivières City, St Philippe Ward Census:
Joseph Dostaler 39
Catherine Dostaler 37
Joseph Dostaler 9
Alfred Dostaler 8
Marie Anna Dostaler 7
Angélina Dostaler 6
Philippe Dostaler 3
Pierre Dostaler 2
Arthur Dostaler 5/12
Abraham Dostaler 27
Dieudonné Dostaler 18
Marguerite Beauviliers 77

It looks like his brothers Abraham and Dieudonné are living with him and perhaps his mother-in-law.

Thanks,
Joanne

Wow Claire, Thank you so much for all of the research you did on the family. Yes, this is the family that I think is my GrGr Grandfather. The Alfred born Nov 2, 1843 has the same date of birth and I have been researching all of the Alfreds in that era and I can't find this Alfred in Canada after 1861. I didn't locate a death record either. My GGGrandfather immigrated to Ishpeming, Michigan in 1862. I was wondering if you know what newspapers I should be reviewing for obituaries for the family members to see if he is mentioned. What other steps to prove he is my GGGrandfather should I be taking? I really appreciate all of the information you have provided already - you've filled in alot of the death dates for me.

Thanks,
Joanne

Perhaps the priest did not know the name of the mother, as it is possible the Jean-Baptiste who died at age 68 was the father of the other Jean-Baptiste who died December 22. The mother could have already passed away and there was no one to ask.

With many thanks to Shari for her translation, I will make a few changes and additions:

Burial, Pierre Cazobon
(In) the year 1755 (on) the 22nd December, I (am) the undersigned missionary priest of Berthier; has died Pierre Casobon, son of Jean Baptiste, and of Genevieve Bruno, his father and his mother, aged twenty-one years, after having received the sacraments of confession and of the eucharist, was buried in the cemetery of this parish in the presence of Antoine Desrosiers, of Joseph La (Fevrier?) and of Alexis Casabon who have declared they did not know how to sign this [document]. Kerberio. Priest.

The other record says "B" for baptism in the margin, but it appears it should also be "S" for burial:

B.(sic) J. B. Cazobon
The year 1755 on the 31st of December, I (am) the undersigned missionary priest of Berthier; has died Jean Baptiste Casoubon, son of Jean Baptiste Casoubon and of (Name Omitted), age of about 68 years, after having received the sacrament of confession and of the eucharist and of extreme unction, was buried[?] (on) the 2nd of January in the church of this parish in the presence of (Rocheville?), of Antoine Desrosiers, and others who have declared they did not know how to sign this [document].
Signed: Kerberio, priest.

Kerberio was indeed the name of the priest. I too have ancestors from this parish and his name appears elsewhere written much more clearly. The word "paroisse" (parish) was often abbreviated (e.g. "psse"), which may lead to some confusion.

Ste-Genevieve records 1755

These are difficult records to translate. This priest writes in a different format than most did. But sometimes just adding the punctuation where we might use it today helps us.

Note: The records also appear to name two sacraments that I do not recognize. I hope someone else will help with those.

Literally, to the best of my ability, these records read:

Burial, Pierre Cazobon
(In) the year 1755 (on) the 22nd December, I (am) the undersigned priest missionary of Berthier; has died Pierre Casobon, son of Jean Baptiste, and of Genevieve Bruno, his father and his mother, age of twenty-one years, after having received the sacraments of penitence and of (??)was buried in the cemetery in this shelter in the presence of Antoine Desrosiers, of Joseph La (Fevrier?) and of Alexis Casabon who have declared they did not know how to sign their names. (Kerberio?) Priest.

The other record says "B" for baptism in the margin, but it appears it should also be "S" for burial:

B.(sic) J. B. Cazobon
The year 1755 on the 31st of December, I (am) the undersigned priest missionary of Berthier; has died Jean Baptiste Casoubon, son of Jean Baptiste Casoubon and of (Name Omitted), age of about 68 years, after having received the sacrament of penitence and of (?) and of (?),was (?) (on) the 2nd of January in the church of this parish in the presence of (Rocheville?), of Antoine Desrosiers, and others who have declared they did not know how to sign their names.
Signed: Kerberio (?), priest.

From the wording, it seems that neither of these men were buried in the cemetery at this time. The first was in some sort of shelter in the cemetery, this last appears to have been actually buried IN the church. I have seen this before, and given the high number of deaths on the pages immediately before and after these records, it seems likely there was some sort of epidemic here.

There was a smallpox outbreak during this period of time in Montreal and Quebec and as many as several thousand people died. That is probably what claimed the lives of these two individuals, although the record does not give this indication.

Regards,
Shari Strahan
Genealogist

Hello:
I am trying to find solid proof that the man who I think is my GGGrandfather really is him. My GGGrandfather migrated to Michigan in 1861 from Canada and then moved on to North Dakota. His name changed multiple times on each document that I have found it is different. His name in the US was Alfred Destella, Dostellere, Destiller...He was born on 11/2/1843 and I found Joseph Alfred Casobon Dit Destoller and he has the same birth date and I don't find him in Canada after the 1861 census. I now would like to find obituaries for his family members to see if he is named as living in MI or ND.
Can anyone tell me what newspaper I should research? He was born in St.-Cuthbert and the family continued to live in Berthier, Berthier County. Was it that common that a family would post an obituary in the late 1800s? What other resources should I be looking at? All advice is welcome and greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Joanne

Hello:
I have a record from 1751-1760 from Berthierville , parish of Ste-Genevieve that has two people on it that I am interested in knowing more about for my family tree, but I don't read French very well and I can't figure out what to type to put in a translater - so I am stuck at this point. Is there anyone out there who would try to translate for me? One is a death record for Pierre Cazabon and the other is a birth record for J.B. Cazabon - (they are both on the same record). Thanks for any help you can provide me.

Joanne

Recently found the death certificate for Jean Baptiste Gouin & wife Louise LaPrade Gouin in Cheboygan, Michigan. In his death certificate Jean Baptiste's daughter Virginia claimed he was born in Red River , Ma. I am sure this is Manitoba. I have papers showing that the father Jean Baptiste worked for Hudson Bay Company so this all makes sense. Jan

found online that Cyrille Piche married Marie Louise Frechette 11 July 1882.

Can't find the original record. The LDS library microfilmed this parish through 1877 or so. Ancestry has more years, but is missing 1881 and 1882.

Any ideas?

Also looking for Cyrille and Louise's parents (which the marriage record would give) Thanks!
Susan
