Hi, my great grandmother was Minnie Denault. She was the youngest daughter of Casimir Denault and Marie Pack. It is the same family.
My greatgrandmother went by the name Casamere as well whenever she could, although in her wedding certificate it was corrected to Denault.
I could not find Casamir's death either, but did find a Casimir working in Ontario. I t was difficult in the Pontiac region and possibly he had to go elsewhere for work.

I am trying to determine if this is the same person or 2 different ones. I have found info that states the following men were married to a woman with this name: Jean Pichon, Jean Petitpas and Joseph Gravelle. Birth dates range from 1556-1594 and death dates are 1605 & 1615 for her. The info on parents are Jean Mace and Genevieve Rolland. According to info I have seen Marguerite Mace(1580-1615) married Jean Pichon abt 1600 and had a daughter Marie Pichon (1611-1661) all in France. I also found info that Marguerite Mace (1595-1615) married 1) Jean Petitpas and had daughter Marguerite.
2) married Joseph Gravel in 1616 and had son Masse-Joseph.

Are these two women sisters or the same person? If anyone can help me figure this out I will be forever grateful. I believe that all the children of these unions came to the Quebec area but that their parents stayed in France. Anyone needing to look at my tree to see why I am confused check out the Lindgren/Strand Family Tree the Nolette Side or email me at dstrand48@gmail.com

Thanks for the invitation to join the Sephardic Forum. I will definitely look into doing that to see what we can contribute and what we can learn further about family derivations.

Interesting that you noted the additional Middle Eastern connections. When we had some of the family complete DNA tests through the Family Tree DNA group, it came back as 87 % West European and 13 % Middle Eastern. The ME group was further attributed to Jewish, Palestinian, Bedouin South, and Mozabite. We weren't surprised by the Jewish connection but were by the others.

We do have one artifact that has come down to us from that side of the family. It is a tapestry with a 12-pointed star in the middle and various geometrical designs that surround it. On each of the four sides there is a saying that repeats itself but is written in a script that we've not been able to identify. I'd be willing to forward you a jpg image it you would like to see if you recognize the design and/or script.

Best wishes,

Tomel
Tom Lanagan
Email: tc49@verizon.net
Family names of interest on this topic: Galipo, Galipeau, Gilbo, Guilbeault, Marchant

Greetings everyone,
Sephardic-Crypto Jews migrated to Quebec and were some of the founding nations (i.e., google: Antaya Habraham & Pelletier & Eli Gelinas).

The ARABIC names (D'Arabi; Mohamed; Oman; Saracen etc.) are also suspected crypto Jews because they INTERMARRIED exclusively and consecutively down through the centuries.
You've probably also noticed 'given,' 'middle,' and 'surnames' were used 'interchangeably.'

Many of these 'crypto' Spanish/Jewish Conversos migrated to MONTREAL. They moved over into the New York and NEW ENGLAND valleys where they farmed and became entrepreuneurs (i.e., surname: MARCHANT = 'merchant').

Though raised 'Catholic' my mom had knowledge of HEBREW, and HEBREW terms, i.e., the 'Shewbread.' She RECITED ALL THE OLD TESTAMENT PATRIOTS...out of the clear blue sky one day...in chronological order.

Mom said when she was growing up, she was often asked if she was Jewish. Both her parents are 'first generation' to the U.S. They were mostly dark haired (but a sprinkling of blondes) and had blue/hazel/greenish or dark colored eyes, the typical longish narrow semitic noses, with a somewhat subtle but definite middle eastern type form/characteristics/frames.

Many "DIT" names are SUBSTITUTES in many cases, for Hebrew Surnames (I have stacks of notes).

OLD and NOBLE HEBREW LINES were in QUEBEC, including BENJAMIN, HABRAHAM, GELINAS, RAPHAEL, GABRAEL, DAVID, SOLOMAN, and others.

The SPANISH & PORTUGUESE given/surnames are also suspected SEPHARDIC-PORTUGUESE-SPANISH in many instances, and they also 'married into certain french families.'

I am working on connecting our SARACEN, D'ARABI, MOHAMED etc. family lines all the way back to the SINAI PENINSULA and down into the HEJAZ of NORTHWEST ARABIA.

The custom of 'burying the deceased one day after' is a Jewish ritual and I think they often claimed they 'could not sign' documents because they preferred 'playing the dumb peasant,' and to 'avoid entrapment' by the church.

They often did not like or trust any 'outsider' priests; they preferred 'crypto' jesuits, 'traveling cryptos,' or 'insiders' only.

Another 'crypto' trait was having their 'marriages' performed at a PRIVATE home and PRIVATE ceremony...

In regards to HEBREW naming patterns, they 'skipped a generation' when they felt threatened, then resumed it when they felt safe again ("mom" attests to this 'skipping' phenomena alot).

You've also noticed 'opera houses' out in the middle of their farm towns no doubt, tucked into their little 'bergs.'
I theorize they tried to hang on to their sense of high aacculturation in days gone by.

Mom's father spoke a type of 'catalan,' she said, and he always complained he could not understand the other 'french' speakers.

I have amassed stacks and stacks of handwritten notes on the CONVERSOS IN COLONIAL FRENCH CANADA. I am DELIGHTED to make your acquaintance!!!

Please accept my invitation to join the Sephardic Forum (it's free) where I have been a member for several years; I am one of a very few who has focused on Quebec and I am certain the forum will be delighted to hear from other Quebec descendants of Conversos. Harry Stein is the moderator and his Spanish/Portuguese archives are also free!
Yours truly,
tish eysman

Re: Translation help? Baptism of Marie Helene Chouinard

>>One record using a another name 'Alphrode', and one of his children's death records used the name Moses (Moyse?).<< Yes, I was referring to children of Frederick's death record. Was it a mistake of a living relative or friend long after Frederick had passed away? Could be, and probably.

When did Frederick cross the border 'officially'? I don't know. If I make the presumption that he went from France occupied Territory where he was born (according to most of his children's census records, which gives his mother as Canadian born), then on to the USA, than I'd say that his first born's Canadian birth, and second born US birth would be the obvious choice time frame for his 'official' crossing. How long was he in Canada prior to coming to the US?? Unknown also.

I would love to have an 1840 Canadian census record or buisiness directory of where he lived (hard to tell!). His earliest US Census is 1850; which doesn't mean he's not on the 1851 Canadian Census, and may be a good idea to look for. If I were to guess his location in 1840's, it might be L'Acadia, or there about.

In 1850, he's living in Chazy, NY, just across the border from Canada, and like St. Valentin, where Helene was born, it's on/near Lake Champlain. Is his 'day labor' trade connected to fishing? Perhaps farming (since many French Canadian farms line the water ways).

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1850usfedcenan...

1860 is a unique time period in the US, of course, due to the Civil War. Only his wife is seen on the census, and we didn't ask civilian's at that time if they were widowed, so I'm not sure if he died prior to 1860 or after. I don't find another census for him for certain, but that doesn't mean one doesn't exist. I'll attach a possible record of him, a Frederick Swenor, that I found for 1860. It may be him.

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1860usfedcenan...

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1860usfedcenan...

I've also found evidence that Sarah 'Sally' Celestia, Frederick's wife, married Nelson Stone, possibly as early as mid 1860's
Is the family in Canada in the 1851 Census? It sounds like they immigrated to the US, is that correct? When and where did the immigrated to first?

>>One record using a another name 'Alphrode', and one of his children's death records used the name Moses (Moyse?).<<

You're referring to Frederic Choiunard, correct? Alphrode sounds like a mangling of Alfred and Alphonse. Alfred and Alphonse are two given names that I've seen interchangable.

The death record data of one of the children is probably sketchy, but might be something to keep in mind. Most likely, Frederic was long gone at the time of the (adult?) child's death, and the informant might have been making a best guess of a name they heard.

If you post a link to the earliest census record you have, I'll have a look at the data.

Thanks for the translation.

From the other baptisms I've found so far (awaiting some to be sent to me from a parish), no added help other than sponsors like this one; if that is helpful.

This is record in a (relatively) standard example of a bap record format.

30 Jan 1842, we the undersigned baptized Marie Helen, born yesterday, of the legitimate marriage of Frederic Chouinard, day laborer [journeyman] and Celeste Lefebrve, of this [St-Valentin] parish. Godfather Amable Gabouriau [surname standardized] signed, godmother Marie Guillar with the father, who could not sign.

I looked for a marriage record, not an easy find from the index. The surname Lefebrve has many dits and is also routine mangled in the index. Chouinard has several dits. There are variants for every surname, for example, Guillar = Guyard

Any other data you have from the other children's bap records?

The best I can suggest is you check other parishes in St Jean and maybe Iberville.
Translation help? Baptism of Marie Helene Chouinard

Hi,
I can read SOME French, but sometimes the handwriting can be tough combined with trying my translating. I would appreciate some help on this record, because the sponsors could give me a clue into this young couple. Frederic Chouinard may have been from another location, although the record does say 'of this parish'. His wife, Celeste/Celesta LeFebvre seems to be a resident of this town of St. Valentine, but I have found NO marriage record for these two at all!! I would love help on that, if you think you can help. I'm hoping a good translation of the Sponsors will help. From my research, Marie Helene was the oldest child of the couple. I'll also link the document.

http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/View.aspx?dbid=1091&pa...
Hi Elizabeth
I am also researching John Sampson Murton. I don't know much about him but am willing to share what I know.
The family settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Kate died in 1953 and is buried in Brookside Cemetery, Winnipeg. John died in 1963.
The 2 eldest sons, John Charles Gordon and William Louis went to Canada in 1919 and 1920, after WW1, their service records are on Ancestry.
I hope this info is of some help to you.
Regards Bev.

Thanks Ginette (and all),

Looking at this, i do NOT think it is the Didas Guilbert i'm looking for.

The Didas Guilbert i'm looking for was born earlier -- April 1850 or April 1855 (i think).

Married Mathilda Langevin. (Domethilde Langevin)

One Child was born Feb 2 1886/1887 -- so this marriage is at least 10 years past the date of what i'd be looking to find.

Thanks again to all for looking into this for me...the hunt now continues! :)

Anne de Beaupre.

Marie Modeste Racine (daugher of Joseph Racine and Marie Rosalie Simard) married Charles Giguieres (son of Joseph Giguieres and Monique Fillion) on July 23, 1798 at Ste.

No sure what your question is.

There's an 10 year gap (1852-1862) between events you have documented. The only options are maybe an entry in the 1861 Canadian Census or the US 1860. If you have found him in either, that wouldn't be entirely surprising, he may have been in transition in 1860 and not enumerated in either. It happens.

Jean Baptiste Klebaur - Angelique Daigle

I am the GGGrandson of Jean Baptiste KLEBAUR (naturalized as John B. KLEBAUR) who was married to Angelique DAIGLE by Rev. S. Goodenough of The First Universalist Society of Derby, VT on Dec. 26, 1862.

The last that the family knew of Jean Baptiste was that he was a gunsmith in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, had a family and disappeared sometime in 1853. His wife, Madeline Schmeltz Klebaur and children returned to her family in New York City. Please see narrative and records at www.klebaur.org. They had immigrated from Alsace to NYC earlier.

We were surprised to find this information of his second marriage, as we knew of no divorce or annulment of his first. Here are the Derby Clerk's minutes of the wedding:

State of Vermont Orleans CountyBe it remembered that at Derby in the county as aforesaid on the twenty sixth day of December in the Year of Our Lord 1862 John B. Klebaur of Brompton Falls in the County of Richmond & Province of Canada East & Angelique Daigle of Sherbrooke in the County of Sherbrooke, Province of Canada East were duly joined in Marriage by S. Goodenough, Pastor of the First Universalist Society in Derby, VT.

Attest Jos Bates 2- Town ClerkI have also attached a copy of the Vermont State record.

I cannot locate Jean Baptiste in any Canada database, he seems to have disappeared from all Canadian records after the birth of his last child in St Hyacinthe in 1852.

Kevin Patrick Flood, Jacksonville, Florida kpflood@klebaur.org

I've been trying to get a birth certificate from New Hampshire for years now, but there doesn't seem to be one. Found others in the same family, but do not have actual certificates, just the info off the Family Search records. I have to order actual certificate and hope it has more info than what is on the site.

I've put many posts on the Guilbert surname board looking for John Phylius Guilbert, and this is the first time i've found anything that seems to tie in at all.

I know the name is very common, and i'm really just now trying to skip a generation and work the other way since i've been unable to get the birth info i need.

What i do know....Didase Guilbert (also went by Francis, and Jospeh D. Guilbert on stuff i've found) married Domithilde (Mathilda is what i had before recently) Langevin.

They had a child who was born on either Feb 2 1886 or 1887 (unsure because they sometimes listed dates this way earlier) and i have conflicting documents with both dates, but the Feb 2 is correct. This child was my mothers great-uncle. I know of two sisters he had (Avila, who married a Carrigan, and Lillian who never married that i am aware of)

These two parent, Mathilda and Joseph/Didas separated/divorced, but i did not know this at first, Joseph had listed "widowed" on his 1910 census. Found that Mathilda married a Frank Enos and she died in 1933 or 1934 in Chelmsford, MA. (we were always told that family had lived in Laconia, and this is where their three children were born, but i haven't been able to find the one child i want to find's birth record).

I'm rambling, so if you look at some of my other posts, they state the info i do have and what i've looked at and tried to find. I don't have it in front of me to put correct info in this post right now, but wanted to respond hoping that someone else has done research on this same family line.

Thanks for listening, and i appreciate everyone's help.
ps: i can't read french, which doesn't help me much when i look at some of the canadian sites.

>>I'm also going to post on Quebec board<<

You are on the Quebec Board.

"Bas" Canada means "lower" Canada, as opposed to upper.

>>and also what board would be St-Barnabé, St-Hyacinthe, Quebec<<

No, the Quebec general board you're posting on is fine.

In regard to your brick wall, did this person marry? If so when and where? His marriage record should list his parents. There are same named individuals, born in the same period, and in the same area. The FC were fond of naming patterns. This is why you need some more data on the individual before searching back further.

I am trying to locate any relatives of James Hilson born in London 1875-1879 and was a Home Child arriving in Quebec in 1891. He stayed in Sherbrooke for a short while before moving to Granby (entry on 1901 census). The only other information I can find is he appeared on the 1940 USA census in Buffalo as a lodger. It would seem he worked across the border in the consatruction industry during the week and went home to his family at weekends.Any information would be very much appreciated.

These may or may not be of help in finding your James Robertson. I also have James son of Leonard as born in 1818but he might have moved to Vermont at the time that Catherine Mary Robertson did.She was my 2nd or 3rd great grandmother. I am not sure if you an open these but we can figure out something if you cannot

Twobuisquit, thanks for your reply. Your James is part of my confusion. I've seen him, and know he can't be the father of my lineage because he died at age 20. My James E, who married Mary Eliza Thurber in tiny Tingwick, lived from 1842 - 1921 and is buried in Rogers County, OK, along with his wife. The mystery continues.

I have researched this line to some extent. Unfortunately, the data found has no-specific to their origin.

There are some reasons why:

1) They're not Catholic, the non-Catholic records tend to have much less detail than Catholic.

2) The parental couple (John Kidney b abt 1790 & Mary Margaret Clark b abt 1804) was married in Ireland.

3) The son, John Kidney (b abt 1821 in Ireland), parents were living in Quebec at the time of his marriage. There would be no detail of his specific birth origin or his parents origin in a marriage record, other than where the were all living at the time of the marriage, which was Quebec for all of them.

4) The burial record can sometimes detail origin, it's a long shot. The best bet is to find the burial record of John Kidney (b abt 1790). It appears he died prior to the 1851 Canadian enumeration.
