Both lines are French Canadian and the lines trace to France. Birtz has several variations and is associated with the "dit" Desmarteau.

The first ancestor of Marie Louise Birtz to arrive in Canada (New France) was Etienne Birtz, a soldier ( http://www.militaryheritage.com/bearn.htm). His marriage record to Marguerite Robert in 1757, cites his parents reside in Metz, France. The Birtz line has origins in Belgium according to the data found on ficherorigin. http://www.fichierorigine.com/detail.php?numero=270012

Given that Québec became a British colony in 1763, very few people immigrated from France between then and the twentieth century.

Hi,
From 1540 to 1681 ? That is a very long period of time.. In that period, the "Duché" de Savoie was independant, but then with wars and attacks, his borders changed a lot... mainly French but see the history of Savoie in Wikipedia:

Hi,
As I previously said at about 1553 the Savoie was a Duchy. So, the people were Savoyard.
Though, the period of time is too large, in that period the Duchy was invaded some time by France and some other time by Geneva.
We can't say the Savoie was French from 1540 to 1681. That is a nonsense.
