McPHAIL, Garnet Waldren - 81, Melanson, Kings Co., NS. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Garnet, which occurred with his family by his side, on Sunday, January 13, 2008, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, NS. Born in Grosse Isle, Magdalen Islands, QC., he was a son of the late Garfield and Alice (Prest) McPhail. Garnet worked as a farmer, a cook at several restaurants in the area, a mason's helper, a woodsman, a tower forest ranger and finally retired from custodial services at Acadia University in 1987. He was well-known as a folk artist and chain saw artist. He received National Film Board achievements with the Folk Art Foundation. His beloved hobby filled his retirement years and his pieces of art were collected, as well as shown, at art galleries across Canada and the United States. Every piece of art had a story and brought a smile to everyone's face. He loved a good conversation with anyone. Garnet had unconditional love for his family and life. He is survived by his wife, Madge (Long); sons, Zane (Gladys) Long, Black River; Keith (Karen) McPhail, Melanson; daughters, Kathy Long, Halifax; Audrey (Peter) Milne, New Minas; Zelda (Peter Stevenson), Aylesford; grandchildren, Leisa, Melanie, Mark, Tanya, Josh, Jessica, Lyndsay, Dawson, Jordan and Lori; six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters, Muriel Battist, Pictou; Blaina Kozicz, Joyce Donnelly and Carmen Goss, all of Ontario. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Ada Jollymore and Orphy MacDonald; brothers, Donald, Wourtle, Charlie, Philip and George; great-grandson, Brayden Wilson. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, January 15, in White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2008. Burial will take place in Black River Cemetery, Kings County. (Halifax Chronicle-Herald, 14 Jan 2008)
