Madores on the Islands

Madores on the Islands

Surnames: Madore
National Archives have William Madore immigrating to Canada in 1874, to Grande Entree...must have been from Newfoundland.
Anyone know which William that was?
Also, my ggrandfather, Thomas Madore b: 9 Apr 1877 was in Grande Entree in the 1901 Census but I can't find where he was before that, or where his kids were born.

It was William Madore married to Josephine Cormier. His father William had died in Sandy Point, Newfoundland. Accompanying him were his mother (a widow) Marie Couenne, and the Cormiers, his in-laws. But you'll find all this if you follow the leads I sent you. Dennis

Was Marie Couenne born in 1830 of aboriginal descent. How would I find her birth certificate, she was married to William Madore, who was my great great grandfather

Marie was not aboriginal, but from FRANCE. I have seen the Couenne name many times in the records of Normandy, as Couenne, Couin, etc. As for where she was born: without the names of her parents, there's no possible way to locate a birth record for her.

Thank you very much.I probably will have the same scenario locating a birth certificate for my great great grandfather as he was born in 1930.

You will, as there is no marriage record for this couple here in North America, and thus, no names of their parents.

Where would I obtain the birth certificate if the church in St Georges doesn't have this. Would it be in the archives of the Bascilica or the Rooms? Would it show on the birth certificate he is aboriginal? I believe his parents were John Madore and Theotiste Marche who was born abt. 1800 in Petit Bras D'or, Nova Scotia

If you want to check, check with the archives of the Diocese of St. John, Newfoundland, although I doubt if they would have it. If it were available, someone would have found it a long time ago, even before you asked. Other people are also looking for them as well.

Lots of these earlier records are either unfortunately lost or hidden in other missionary registers. The Maritime Provinces (NS, NB, PEI & NF) did not have the habit of keeping two sets of books, like Quebec did from its foundation (one at the parish level and another copy in the Provincial archives). When records were lost through fire or some other reason, they stayed lost; there wasn't a second resource to consult for information as in Quebec, or unless the pastors reconstructed the missing registers themselves through consultation with their living parishioners (as in the cases of Notre-Dame de Quebec or Church Point, NS).

Any Nova Scotia missionary journals kept in the Gulf of St-Lawrence area from this early period were probably housed at the rectory in Arichat, NS (one of the earliest dioceses in Nova Scotia), yet all the records there burned in November 1838 in a fire at the rectory. That parish's earliest registers (pre-1839) were never reconstructed.

You could also try contacting the Newfoundland/Labrador GenWeb and asking if anything was kept on file in Stephenville, NF. Perhaps they have some resources, or census records to solve your mystery. I myself know of no other source material than the Sandy Point registers, which are quite spartan (i.e., lacking a lot of information) for their earliest years.

Also, don't bother with St-Pierre et Miquelon. These islands were vacant of French inhabitants from 1794 to 1816, due to British occupation. They were only resettled with its original French and Acadian families that year, but I have not found any mention of the Madore or Couenne families in their records in the timeframe you're asking about.

I am puzzled where to go from here as there is no birth certificate for William Madore 1830 in Sandy Point, I know his Mom and Dad were from Petit Bras D'or Nova Scotia, they were Theotiste Marche and John Madore. I was told by the Church to check in Stephenville, but am not sure about this. I was going to go to our Archives and see if anything was there, but apparently records were not kept. I a told I need the birth certificate in the long form, but have birth certificates on my great grandmother Mari Anne Madore which are very short and do not say she was first nation. Maybe my search will stop here, as I am stumped. It is very interesting to see my family history, I did a course of family genealogy at MUN, but went wrong on my Mother's side, so it is nice to finally get it right.
