John Jones was born at sea, on the way from Ireland to Quebec about 1800. He was the son of Henry Jones and Margaret Bristol and first appears in the 1861 census at the Township of Perce, with his wife, Louise Lambrette (sometimes transcribed as Lambert) and children. They were married in 1844 at Grande-Riviere.

John Jones appears to have died sometime between 1862 and 1871 when Louise appears remarried at L'Anse du Cap to Alexis Beaudin. Judging the the baptisms, John Jones and family should be either in Perce or Grande-Riviere for the 1851 census but I haven't been able to find that region in any online census. Was the Gaspe not covered?

I haven't been able to find a death or burial register nor headstones for John Jones, Louise Lambert or any children. I also haven't found his parents, Henry Jones or Margaret Bristol but suspect they lived in Quebec city for a time.

Any help finding out what happened of John Jones and where he came from would be greatly appreciated.

1875. Présents: Christin Lanteigne, Frs.-d'Assise Lanteigne.

Thank you very much for writing. Please excuse my lack of French.

The image of the 1861 census appears to list John Jones as being 61 years old, not 41 so I was wondering if his age was known from another source? I believe John Jones died at Cap-d`Espoir, Québec in 1869. Ancestry has an entry for him but it's almost unreadable and I haven't found any area cemeteries transcribed online.

Louis Lambrette/Lambert died there as well in 1915 so I believe she was buried at St-Joseph Cemetery at Cap-d'Espoir, likely the same cemetery at John Jones. Whether she is buried with Alexis Beaudin or John Jones is unknown but if a headstone still stands for him, it'd hopefully settle his birth year.

Do you know of anyone with access to the cemetery?

Best regards.

Hi,

Sadly, the 1851 census for Gaspé no longer exist, because the records have not survived.

In 1869, the John Jones you refer to in your message, is John Jones Jr. a son to John Jones and Louise Lambert. He was 20 years old and died on December 13 1869 and buried on the 15th of December.

John Jones Sr. a fisherman had already passed on. He most likely died at sea between 1861-1869, since no death records have ever been found for him in the Gaspé area.

If it may helps others, I am including John Jones baptism record here.

I am also working on some Jones of my own, but the branch I am looking for, settled in Fraserville Rivière-du-Loup Québec, that's why your message caught my attention.

Happy climbing,

Gigi
