John Carter and Anna Bella May Thompson of Gaspé
Aldo and All,
John Carter married Anna Bella May Thompson on August 10, 1880 in Gaspé. The act is almost illegible in the Anglcan Church of Gaspé register.
John was born (James and Ellen Toomey) on Dec. 6, 1840 in Gaspé. Sponsors: M. E. Thorn??, H. illisible, Ellen Carter, the mother of the child.
Anna Bella May Thompson was born (Jerry or Henry Thompson and Anna-Bella....) on Feb. 27, 1857 in Sandy Beach. Sponsors: Robert Millen, Mary Ray or Roy, Matilde Cunning.
John died on July 13, 1923 in Gaspé. Présents: W. E. Carter, F. J. Richmond. Âgé de 83 ans. On ne mentionne pas son épouse.
Anna Bella May Thompson died on April 14, 1923 in Montréal. Présents: Ch... Phillip, N. Carter. On la dit résidante de Gaspé. On ne mentionne pas son âge. On indique à quel cimetière elle a été enterré, mais illisible (... Royal Cemetery).
I do not find the couple in the 1921 Canadian Census.
Is there a reason why the couple was not buried together in Gaspé? Where were they in 1921.
Their daughter Muriel-Olive-Annie Carter (b. July 1, 1895 in Gaspé) marries (contract) Niels Brock Lanbelle, from Denmark, forestry engineer, on Nov. 9, 1929 in Montréal. I do not have the détails: witnesses.
This couple has two kids they baptised in Trois-Rivières. Jessie-Mable Carter, Muriel's sister is god-mother.
For the other siblings of Muriel, I have not found any other infos: - Mortimer Fitzgarald, b. 1881 - Ida-Martha, b. 1883 - Sydney-John, died in 1918 in France. WW1 - Jessie-Mabel, apparently did not marry.
I would appreciate any infos.

Re: John Carter and Anna Bella May Thompson of Gaspé
Hello,
The McCord Museum in Montreal has Anna's (or Annie's) wedding dress, donated by her daughter in 1974. The rust-coloured dress is part of an upcoming exhibition at the McCord, opening to the public on November 21, 2014 and running through April. I would be happy to send invitations to any descendants for the opening November 19. Please contact Cynthia Cooper -- email available on McCord website.
The donor identified herself as Ida Morton Carter, and she identified her mother as Annie Steele Thomson (no p) of Montreal. She gave the wedding date correctly. Although I cannot read the record of their marriage in the register on ancestry, the index confirms that she is Annie S. Thomson.

Objet : Re: John Carter and Anna Bella May Thompson of Gaspé
According to the 1901 Census of Gaspé, Ida Morton Carter was born on Feb. 26, 1882. The 1911 Census of Gaspé gives her birth date Feb. 27, 1884.
I could not locate the register act, because quite unligible. At the time, they were 5 kids with the parents.
I join the photo of John Carter's headstone in Gaspé.
Would you have a background on Mrs Ida M. Carter?
Thanks!

Re: Annie Steele Thomson, poss d/o Wm Allan Thomson
Annie Steele Thomson appears to be the name of the wife of John Carter. Her burial record reads: "Baptist Olivet Church [Guy / Dorchester], Montreal. Annie Steele Thomson wife of John Carter resident of Gaspe, PQ, died at the above address [i.e., Gaspe] the 14th day of April, 1923. A service was conducted by me at the undertaker rooms of Bemond [?] Co[mpany], St Catherine street West, City of Montreal, PQ. On the 18th day of April 1923, the remains were [escorted?] to the Mount Royal Cemetery for burial. FL Dichard, Minister. Witnesses Cha[rle]s JP Heslip, [M?] Carter."
Also buried in the same cemetery from the same church was William Allan Thomson who died at Arundel, Argenteuil, QC, 21 May 1882, witness Henry Morton. Henry Morton's wife Annie c1832-1909 was a Lowland Scots woman, possibly a relative of Thomson. Also buried at Mount Royal are Annie Steele Thomson's children: Mortimer FitzGerald Carter, Ida Morton Carter, and Jessie Mabel Carter.
William Allan Thompson was present in 1851 census, age 34, born Scotland, Presbyterian, a miller. Sherbrooke County / 430 Melbourne Township, Brompton Gore, page 14d,15a, (29).
William Allan Thompson, Miller, and his wife Mary Ann, baptized in the Presbyterian register of Melbourne Township, 29 August 1857 three daughters named: Jessie Amelia; Eva; and Annie. The DOB 26 August 1854 given for Annie Thomson compares superficially to a DOB for Mrs Carter in one census as "26 August 1855". The triple Baptism does not report on Place of Birth. 1891 census for Mrs Carter lists her born PQ, father born Scotland, mother born PQ, religious confession F[ree] Baptist.
Colin MacIver, Bachelor, Farmer, Melbourne, and Jessie Thomson, Spinster, residing in Melbourne, were married on this 25th d. July 1860 by me WF Hodgnett, Minister Officiating. Signed Colin McIver, Jessie Thomson, WA Thomson, Jno King[ma?]. Melbourne Presbyterian register. Colin, Jessie and their daughter Agnes Julia McIver 1862-1891 were buried at St Andrew's Cemetery, Melbourne Township, later Richmond Co, QC.
In summary, it would appear that Mrs John Carter was born the daughter of a Scots miller and his wife Mary Ann, herself only possibly Canadian-born. We do not yet know the origin of the surname "Steele" found as a middle name for Annie Steele Thomson. Does any one have information on the wife of WA Thomson? Aldo

Re: Annie Steele Thomson, poss d/o Wm Allan Thomson
Hi Aldo,
Do we know the name of Annie as registered on her marriage act to John Carter in 1880 in Gaspé? Act almost illegible.
For some reason I had Anna-Bella-May (Jerry or Henry Thomson and Anna-Bella...), born Feb. 27, 1857 in Gaspé.
"died at the above address "; I believe it would be Guy-Dorchester.
How do we get the infos on the kids buried in Mount Royal cemetery?

Re: Annie Steele Thomson, d/o Wm A Thomson
HI JP, We need to have a person look at the original 1880 marriage record. The ancestry index calls her "Annie Steele Thomson" but the on-line film image is, as you say, unreadable. Like yourself, I had expected that John Carter had married a local gal. The 1861 and 1871 census returns ought to have Annie S Thomson living in PQ. The street address "Guy-Dorchester" was added by me, so that info was not original to the burial document. The only address named was Gaspe. The wording composition and the handwriting were both painful. The church building is now serving as a youth hostel. "Find A Grave" -> Mount Royal, lists the children and these death dates were integrated to the present Carter tree at www.bakerchild.tribalpages.com Thank you for yr inspiration! -Aldo
