I have a Frederick Perchard, born April 14, 1845 in Jersey, Channel Islands, immigrated to the Gaspe' area. Married a Hedwidge DeRoy of L'Islet, Quebec. I wonder if these two men are related? I don't know any more than this. Perhaps we can compare notes? Please get in touch, Maureen Hopper

James Perchard established himself as a prosperous merchant in Gaspé where he built his house The One Ash. James Perchard m1, Jane Chevalier in Jersey. James m2, Sophia-Hannah Coffin (1809-1886) of Gaspé. James Perchard d Gaspé Oct 3, 1865 age about 60. "Sacred to the memory of Jane Chevalier wife of James Perchard Esq. who departed this life 24th August 1848 aged 36 years" reads her fine stone on the Clergy Reserve cemetery in Gaspé. I am unaware that Perchard had a child, you may want to see whether Jane Chevalier had had a child in Jersey. Examining the census of 1861 for the town of Gaspé may help.

Thank you for your reply. It's great to hear from you. My Great-Grandmother, Mary Parks Perchard, was born in the Montreal area of Quebec. Her father's name was Frederick Perchard and her mother was a Edwidge or Hedwidge DeRoy from L'Islet, Quebec. I find Frederick Perchard on the LDS search site as being from Jersey, Channel Islands. My mother says that she remembers her grandmother (Mary Parks Perchard) telling her about her numerous visits to the area. I also have Frederick Perchard's birthdate as April 14, 1845, Jersey, Channel Islands. Also, on the 1881 Census, it has his birthplace as Jersey, Channel Islands.I can't find either Frederick or his wife on the 1901 Census, however, Mary Perchard's brother, Gordon George Perchard is living with her and her husband, Percival Foster in Montreal, Quebec. Frederick had 3 other children, Alfred F. Perchard, Helen Perchard and a George Nicholas Perchard (died young). Perhaps these two Perchards are unrelated, but I find it very coincedental. The name Perchard in Quebec doesn't seem to appear very often, and both of the from the same place too. Thanks for all of your help anyhow, good luck, Maureen Hopper

Hi,
My family (Bakers) owned the One Ash Inn in Gaspe for years. I have the name of an historian who has done extensive research on the One Ash Inn and he may have answers for you. Also can email you information I've collected on the history of the One Ash if you wish. There is much written on its history and owners and builders. Let me know if I can help.

Thanks Iani! This is very exciting! I replied to the gentleman who had the inquiry about James Perchard. He didn't know of any siblings coming over with James, however, my ancestor, Frederick Perchard (married Edwidge DeRoy) from Jersey, Channel Island, that came to the Gaspe region is around the same age to be his brother and I think that the similarity is too strong to ignore. I would love to have the information that you have collected on the One Ash Inn, as well, I would love to know anything about the area from your local historian! Thank-you! Maureen.

Hi,

PERCHARD Mary Jane (James & Jane Chevalier of Gaspé Basin, formerly of Jersey) b. Apr. 8, 1839

PERCHARD Jane, wife of James Perchard of Gaspé Basin, died May 29, 1839, is this a mistake????

PERCHARD Henry George (James & Jane Chevalier of Gaspé Basin & native of Jersey) b. Feb. 17, 1841

PERCHARD Jane Chevalier, Wife of James Perchard, Merchant of Gaspé Basin, died Aug. 24, 1848

PERCHARD James Esq. Of Gaspé Basin died Oct. 3, 1865 at 60 yrs.

COFFIN Sophia Hannah (Benjamin & Christianna Paterson, Farmer of North West Arm) b. July 8, 1829

In the 1881 Gaspé census, there is a Sophia Perchard, aged 71, widow, living at Frederick Annett's.
There was a Sophia Coffin who had previously married Richard Annett ca 1828,
ANNETT Richard of South West Arm died Feb. 25, 1862 at 79 yrs.
Frederick Annett was her son:
ANNETT Frederick (Richard & Sophia Coffin, Farmer of Gaspé Bay) b. …. 13, 1818 and baptized in 1837

PERCHARD James, Merchant of Gaspé Basin, married
COFFIN Sophia Hannah of Gaspé Basin on Sept. 28, 1852

In the 1861 Gaspé census, a James Perchard, aged 55, lives with Mrs. Perchard (married in 1852), aged 52, James Jr. aged 29, Henry aged 20, Edward aged 19, and Mary Moreau, aged 19.

As you may find, there seems to be 2 Sophia Coffin, one b. 1809, the other one born 1829.

There is also 2 Jane Chevalier who died, one in 1839 (perhaps a mistake), one in 1848.

There were Perchard kids: Mary-Jane, Henry-George, James Jr, Edward. We do not have the register for James Jr and Edward.

Hi. There must be some confusion. I am researching Frederick Perchard b. April 14, 1845 or 1846 - St. Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands who immigrated to the Gaspe' area. He was the s/o Nicholas Perchard (Church of England)(St. Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands) and Mary Ann Parkes (England). He married Edwidge DeRoy (RC), d/o Basile DeRoy and Marie Helene Lamarre of L'Islet, Quebec. Frederick and Edwidge Perchard children born in Montreal - Mary Parkes Perchard, Helen Perchard, Alfred F. Perchard, George Nicholas Perchard, and Gordon George Perchard. (All are Church of England). I was trying to find out if there was any relation between "my" Perchards and James Perchard, but I havn't found any. I don't know anything about James Perchard and Jane Chevalier, however, the original author of the message, someone by the name of Aldo, might. Thank you, M. Hopper
