Bonjour Guy Le Bourdais,

I am descended from Catherine Le Bourdais, the younger sister of Auguste Le Bourdais (she was born in 1848). She married a Normand and moved to the United States (North Dakota).

She was my great grandmother on my mother's side. Her son, my grandfather, was Alzor Auguste Normand, who had 11 children, my mother Ione being the second.

Merci de me repondre si possible.

Amicalement, -Aldo

Hi,

At this period, there not many priests around. The Carleton (Tracadièche) priest was for a time the only one to service the north and South shores of baie des Chaleurs, from Percé to Caraquet.

Ste-Anne was the parish of Restigouche in the Bonaventure County, QC. St-Joseph is the parish of Carleton in Bonaventure County, QC. Dalhousie is in the Restigouche County, NB.

Go on Google map and learn about the location of these places.

I think the Meagher/Maher were moving where there was work.

jp

Hi JP,
Your point is well taken and knowing myself that Carleton is in Quebec; I wonder why this family in 1851 residing in Dalihouse(spelling off), Restigouche County, New Brunswick would be baptizing children in Carleton? I am very cofused with this area and boundries. I have baptisims in Restigouche, Quebec, Carleton, Quebec, and parish of St. Anne, County Bonaventure, Quebec all wrapped into the same family while the 1851 census says they lived in the above location.
I would certainly appreciate any explaination on your part or your possible thoughts.
Thank you, Elizabeth

Rousseau

Bonjour,

On retrouve Marie-Denise Rousseau mariée à Jean Cronier (inconnus) vers 1751.

On qualifie Marie-Anne d'autochtone.

JP

Hi Elizabeth

The name Maher and its variations of Mahar, Meagher is a very common Irish surname.
The info you provided does not link with my family that I can see at this time. John and Patrick were a very names, but at this time the Mahers I am following did not live in Carleton NB.
I was looking over your dates and wondering if Helene Grady had been married before. I wonder about starting a family (if her year of birth was 1788) at aged 36- that was late for women at that time, but common for Irish men.

I will keep your request for info current and if I run across any new information pass it on to you.
Regards
Barbara Maher

Thanks again! I do have a family tree posted in the genealogy web site called "Geni." It is for the Peter Godske Brandt family, etc. Their cousin was N.C.Brun, who later in his life wrote an interesting account of the family experience in Gaspe-- or really Coin du Banc and Barachois. It is easy to find this story translated to English on the internet. Their Gaspe journey has been quite a mystery but records have been turning up to put the pieces together.

Wow! Thank you very much! I had found the birth of Gaord Brandt (2nd great uncle to me) and the Census, but never had the discipline or fact finding ability to look for the other Norwegian families. The names are quite misspelled, but with an imagination it is obvious which ones are from my clan in the census. I'm sure others with curiosity can figure it out too. It helps to know the name variations they used in Norway and the names that they converted to when they became American citizens.

This thread is a little old, but I'll try to reply anyway. My ancestors came through Gaspe/Malbay in 1860-1862. Since they were there in January 1861 they are listed in the Quebec census from that year. My ancestors came from the Lofoten Islands and Sor Trondelag, and they made their way to Wisconsin and Minnesota. I've been to Gaspe to explore -- it is obvious that they had a difficult time with the land available to them. The Canadian government found the land records and sent us maps so we were able to locate the exact property, given the help of some very nice locals. Today there is no one living on the property, or anywhere near it! We found one birth/baptism record during that time from the Methodist Church in Gaspe. There is a history professor from Minnesota who is writing a new book on the Norwegian - Canada Immigration period, and hopefully it will be out in a few years, and should include some information on the subject. The names of my ancestors include Peter, Ludvig and Fredrick Brandt - 3 brothers and their families. I'd be really interested to connect with any of the other Gaspe Settlement families!

Are you a direct male descendent of Richard Ascah, and if so have you ever considered doing the Y-DNA test through FamilyTreeDNA? With a 37-marker test (or greater) it might just break down that brick wall and make the connection to whatever family Richard originally came from. I wish I could take the test myself, but I'm a female descended in a haphazard way from him. :) I'd love to start an Ascah surname project over at FTDNA but so far no Ascahs seem interested in genetic genealogy. I'm going to Gaspe next summer, so I'll have to look for the house.

Hi there
I am a distant relative of the Kennedys- Charles Xavier Kennedy (born about 1849 in Douglatown) married my great grandfther's sister, Louisa Trudell. I am a Trudell in Massachusetts. Charles nd Louisa had 10 children, most descendants now living in major cities in Canada, like Montreal. There is a Douglastown website run by one guy and it has a ton of information. I don't have the website off hand but it comes easy on web search for historical Douglastown. He's even got lots of really old pictures.

I am researching the Maher family; John Maher was my ggg grandfather. I have found him among public member records in several cases which lists his father as William Maher and mother Catherine Hannell.
He is listed as being born -Liverpool- Ireland? And his death in Douglastown Gaspe Quebec (accurate)
Several of the records indicate a wife named Catherine Hanley and second wife of Roseann McGrath (Canada).
This is where the mystery and confusion starts.
My ggg grandfather was born in Ireland- (Liverpool is in the UK- we believe he was born in the either Kilarney or Tipperary) His wife was listed as a Kennedy who died in crossing(ca 1825) He is listed on early Census 1831 in Perce with 2 children no spouse
He married Roseanne in Canada(1835) and had several more children.
Question- I believe the truth is a combination of the both sides. I have asked several people if they would share where they obtained their info- none have replied.
What can I do- Do you have the answer- will you share

Thank you for your time

Any and all information would be greatly appreciated
Barbara Maher
(the property that John Maher acquired in the mid 1800's(Gaspe area) is still in the family today !)

As a direct descendant I can tell you that Richard came from God only knows where, landed in the northern states, and moved north. He married in NS as mentioned, and then fought for the king of England at the Plains of Abraham. For his efforts he was awarded the land at the end of the Gaspe Pen., bay side. The remnants of the original stone house can still be found, next to the cemetery - if it has not finished falling into the bay yet - I have not been home in twelve years, so I am not sure what state it foundation is in.

Kennedy family in Douglas Township Gaspé Quebec Canada East?

I have tried for 5 years to find out where my gg gf John Kennedy and his son, my g gf, William (1840 - 31 Mar 1927,) were born. On William's death certificate it states he was born in Nfld, and so was his father John. However, I cannot find them anywhere.

I keep coming back to an 1860 Canadian Census for Lower Canada East in the township of Douglas in the county of Gaspé. It lists a John Kennedy (b 1816) and his son William Kennedy (b 1840) who were fishermen. The birthdates are about right for my Kennedy's. I beginning to wonder if is possible that William Kennedy eventually went to Cat's Cove, Nfld, and started his family there.

Does anyone know anything about the Gaspé Kennedy's?

Hello JP

I am descended from John Maher, married to Roseann, their son Peter Married to Catherine White who had many children, one of which was my grandfather Charles born 1880.

The information you provided I did have most of these relationships....does anyone know where in Ireland the Mahers came from

Is there some documentation that shows John and James were brothers or not. As I mentioned in my opening post- on several public member trees a John Maher 1793-1868 (death in Douglastown) is listed. They also list William Maher as the father and have at least one to two more generations of family- but as of yet no one has responded to my query about what documents they have to have made these connections.

Have you been researching for a long time. Our family still has a summer residence on some of the property originally owned by John Maher. It is interesting to see how far the descendants have moved from the original areas of Ireland and eastern Canada.

Thank you for your speedy response
Barbara

Your reply is informative. The Malbaie Township today falls under Perce, MRC Rocher Perce. North Range refers to a concession not along the sea, but hinterland, say, behind the first range of land lots on the coastal road. The plan was not well formed, the area for the land lots was uncleared woodland, hard to access from the Gulf. Land settlement schemes sometimes have daunting, almost insurmountable, barriers to challenge. The Gaspe Norwegian settlers went on to Minnesota or Wisconsin, documentation if any survives, could be buried in the Robin, Jones & Whitman Co. Papers, Ottawa, although the Fauvel family of Jersey, CI, and residing at Pointe St Pierre, later proprietors of the LeBoutillier Brothers Company of Jersey, CI, possibly initiated the scheme with the help of a local Crown land agent who sold "wasteland" or bush uncleared and unpatented. Finding more original records will enlargen our understanding of what went wrong. -Aldo

I'm not quite sure what you are asking for. As far as I know the families scattered. My family -- Brandt and Brun -- went to the Norwegian settlement in Bury/Sherbrooke for a short time after Gaspe, and then to Dunn County, Wisconsin, or Chicago, Illinois. Within a few years some settled in Western Minnesota. They seemed to go to places where other Norwegian's from their home regions were settling. The Brandt family has flourished! We have lost touch with the Brun family.

The best personal record of their time in Gaspe is from N.C.Brun, published in a book called Symra. Translated english versions of his story are reprinted in several places on internet genealogy sites. It is titled "My First Years in Canada." N.C. Brun became a Lutheran pastor and traveled at least within Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and Saskatchewan.

There is a census report from 1861 where some Norwegian families are listed. I am curious to know if the Protestant churches have records of deaths from the settlers. We have the land record from the Township of Malbaie, listing the name of Ludvig Brandt at lot 2 Malbaie Range North. We believe that on this lot lived 3 brothers (each with a wife and family), their 2 younger sisters, and their mother (their father died on the boat from Norway). The Brun family apparently lived several miles away.

There are not passenger lists for the ships that they came on, just a few names listed in the Norwegian newspapers when the boats were sailing. The immigration books discuss the promoters of the colony, but do not mention any names of the settlers.

I would appreciate any corrigenda to data on the website. There are some names like Anderson, Johnson, Nold, Olson, which may relate to the Norwegian settlement. We have not co-ordinated data on these people in the Gaspe, is there a store of data on the settlers once they establish in the west?
-Aldo

Hello, Your query is quite important in the social history of the Gaspe. Welcome to the General Board. Norwegians were recruited to assist in the salmon fishery, as the Norwegian people are renowned for their knowledge of curing salmon. As the Norwegians were of the Lutheran confession, in the Malbay Anglican register they do appear at the brief window. The land allocated to the Norwegian settlers would seem to have been ill chosen, being inland between the Saint John River and the Malbaie River, much too remote to be practical. Several of the colonists died in that first year. The only sensible solution was for the remainder to relocate to the west where their brethren were established. We have a small amount of information on the Norwegians on the Gaspe Roots website bakerchild at tribalpages.com

Regards, -Aldo B

I am curious to learn about any local information regarding the failed Norwegian settlement at Gaspe - Coin du Banc, during 1860-62. I was recently in Coin du Banc and didn't meet anyone with any memory of the settlement, except for one man that remembered a road/trail from Douglastown into the forest nicknamed "the Norwegian road". The Canadian Government arranged for a group of more than 100 settlers to buy land in the forest. However the conditions were very difficult and promises were not kept, as the story goes, so "all" of the families apparently left in 1862. My ancestors were part of the Brandt and Brun families that attempted to settle with this group. They ended up in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
