Hi Jean: I have a James Dickson married to Margaret McLean in 1862. I'm trying to find the parents of Robert Dickson who married Persis Pierce Giffin in N.S. 22 OCT 1779. He was a Sgt in the Kings Orange Rangers and I believe stationed in Liverpool, N.S. My GGGrandfather was David Dickson of Entry Island. He was a son of Robert and Persis.
Do you have more? Thanks, "Mike"

Hello Dennis:
I am tracing the descendents of James George Aitken (Aitkens) who moved from PEI with his wife Sarah Burke in 1848. They had a number of children on of them was Annie Elizabeth Aitken who married (1) Alexander Arthur Clarke b.1854 and (2) John Richards b.1857. I know she had a number of children but I can find very little on her husbands. Have you anything on these two people? Ron Smith

Hi,

Annie was daughter of James & Sarah Burke. She married (1) Grindstone, QC (todays's Cap-aux-Meules) [St-Luke Ch.] 18 Apr 1876 Arthur CLARKE son of Harvey Clarke & Catherine (Kate) McPhail. He was born 20 Sep 1854 and died 24 Sep 1883.

They had five children: Ada 1877, Edith 1878, Douglas 1880, Albert 1883, and Susan 1884.

Annie then married (2) Grosse-Ile, QC [Holy Trinity Ch.] 15 Jun 1885 to John RICHARDS (parents undetermined, not in records) and had the following children:

Daisy and Violet (twins) 1886, Rebecca 1887, Allen 1890, Nora 1891 and Norman 1892.

Annie died at Grosse-Ile 18 Feb 1932 aged 76 years old.

You can find more info on the kids at Rik Clark's website:

John,

We corresponded before in May 2012. I have not found a birth record for the Joseph Deveau born on the date you give above, so I do not know his real parents' names, unfortunately. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Your Magdalena Colorado is probably a misreading of "Magdalen Islands". Did you do the transcription? I found the original and it is Magdalen Islands. They were living at Lansdowne in Pictou County, NS.

By the way, I never found your Joseph's birth, but have a theory about who his parents were. The only Deveau living at Grande-Entree (not far from Grosse-Ile) during the 1901 and 1911 census was an Honoré Deveau (son of François & Angelique Hebert). Honoré was married three times: 1st to Charlotte LeBlanc (of whom 6 children); 2nd to Marie Poirier (of whom 1 son); and 3rd to Angelique Deraspe (of whom 4 children found, born when Honoré was in his 70s! ). This last marriage occured at Grande-Entrée on 1 Dec 1906. Honoré was 68 years old and his third wife was 22 years old! He died at Pointe-aux-Loups in 1929, aged 97 years old.

His second wife Marie Poirier died in January 1902, after which there was a lull of 4 years until his last marriage. Since he was the ONLY Deveau living in the immediate area, it is very possible that he was Joseph's father. Joseph's mother (although unknown) could "possibly" be Angelique Deraspe or an unknown woman. Your Joseph would have been born prior to their 1906 wedding, and possibly given up for adoption to the Deagles. The son "Germain" Deveau (found with Honoré and Angelique in the 1911 census was really Jeremie Deveau, born of Marie Poirier, circa September 1901.

In my own research of the Islands families, I have very often found that when a groom remarried, any children of a previous marriage/liason were given up for adoption or to other family members to raise, so that the new family unit could start off fresh (so to speak). It was not the case of a widow with children who remarried. She often brought the children of a previous marriage to the new family unity (especially any boys who could help in the fishery and thus support the family). Perhaps Angelique gave up her first born son (prior to her marriage) so as not to embarrassed. Either that or Honoré had the child with someone who is presently unknown to us.

Other than that, if you insist he was born a Deveau, there would be no other likely candidate, not even if the Deagles went to Bassin to adopt a child, where the majority of Deveaus lived at that time. Hoping this makes some sense.
