Many thanks for your efforts. Do the records show whether these people were single or married, by any chance? It might be easier for me to try to connect them. I recognise two of the names as regular ones in the family I am researching.

Joan
Hi Joan,

I tried to find something else that would be more clear, but no luck.
Except that I could read the same document (Passenger Lists 1865-1922) from the Librairy and Archives Canada.
We can read the name Mary Snelling and the letter a is not for Ann or else. It think it means that the age is not available.
Also the dates are right: Departure from Liverpool June 30th 1910 and date of arrival July 8th 1910.
If you want you can go on the site: Librairy and Archives Canada - Passenger Lists 1865-1922 Tunisian 1910 Page. 27

Sorry I could not be more helpful!!

Claire

Hi Claire,
The first option is the one I am interested in. I notice you have put Mary A. Did it have an A. for her initial on the record you saw, or was that because I put an A.? I only ask because after my first post I rechecked the sailing record and decided it probably had an M. for the initial.
If it is an A. on the arrival record, and a possible mistake on the sailing record, then it is quite possible it is my Mary Anne.
I'm assuming they are two different records as mine has a sail date and yours has an arrival date. It could, of course, be the same copy with just the sailing/arrival dates added as appropriate.

Many thanks for your reply. Joan

Hi Claire,

Many thanks for your reply.

The 2nd and 3rd options are not my Mary.

The first one was the one I was interested in. I see you have put Mary A. I rechecked the record after first posting and have decided it reads Mary M. If it is Mary A on the record you saw, then perhaps the sailing from here had the wrong initial. If this is the case, it could well be my missing Mary Ann.

Thanks again.
Hi Joan,

There are 3 documents from the Canadian Passenger Lists (1865-1935) concerning Mary Snelling.

1- Mary a Snelling (no indication on her age) came to Québec from Liverpool July the 8th 1910 on the Tunisian. She was alone and on her way to British Columbia, Canada.

2-March 17th 1907 from Liverpool to New-York to Victoria, B.C. on the Campania, Mary Ann Snelling 36 years, with her husband Arthur Snelling 35 years, and children Frederick 6 years and Arthur S. 2 years.

3- March 11th 1911 from Liverpool to Nova Scotia on the Virginia, Mary Snelling 40 years, Arthur 39 years, Frederick 10 years and Arthur 5 years. They were going to Victoria, B.C.

I am not sure that will help and on every documents of the year 1910 Mary's age was not available.

If you have anything new please let me know. I hope to get out to Vermont later this year, and do a little digging.

Thanks

Keith

 Hello Canada,

Is there anyone out there who has access to records of passengers coming in from England? I have a Mary A. Snelling, wife, unaccompanied by husband, sailed on the SS Tunisian from Liverpool to Quebec on 30th. June 1910. Unfortunately there was no record of her age so I'm not certain it is my Mary Ann. If anyone is able to check the incoming record at Quebec, there may be more details about her. Fingers crossed that she might be the correct one, otherwise she seems to have disappeared from the face of the earth.
Regards, Joan

Gloria,
I am not as prudent about checking message boards as I should be. I saw the Winn geneology you posted and was very impressed. Several questions popped into mind. Jacobs birth date and Simon? Simon's lists his parents as Joel and Betsy. He was Webster's father and Adelaide's husband. He owed land next to Chancey and John but I have never been able to connect him to the family. Issac's will does not list him ( Issac had no issue and was a widower so his estate was divided up between living relatives). One newspaper article from Chauncey's daughter states Jacob came over from England with two or three brothers. I thought Joel might be a brother. He states he was born here but Simon says he was born in England on some sources. I don't know if there is a connection or not. Simon moved back to Canada for a while before returning to Wisconsin and dying there.
I contacted come of Jacob jr family and they said he died of fever on board ship.
I contacted Stanstead but was unable to find out any information on Jacob's death and/or burial. It has been a while since I spke with the Stanstead people so maybe I will try again.
If I can help fill in any more blanks I will be happy to do so and promise to check my messages more often.
Thanks for all the good work!
deb

I just came across an article in the Stanstead Journal April 23 1914 that gives a tiny bit of information. It states that Elm Grove Farm formerly owned by William Hunter which was sold to Joel H Ives about 40 years ago has been sold to Mr A H Moore. In 1900 J Eugene Ives acquired property from his father. It contains 285 acres and is located about mile and a half from Stanstead Plain.
That farm was adjacent to my grandfather's and I visited it on occasion as a child, It was on Dufferin Ave.
The Stanstead Journal article April 23 1914 can be located at news.google.com/newspapers

I can't find John specifically (did he end up in the States, maybe), but Ives family members appear to have been affiliated with the Church of England (St James) in Hatley. I found Julius Ives, marrying Laura Drew there in 1824, with Joel H Ives signing as a witness. Joel and Lucy are buried in the Ives Cemetery in Georgeville, Quebec http://www.interment.net/data/canada/qc/stanstead/ives/index...
There are photos of their stones on "Find a Grave", also. Quite a few members of the Ives family are there.

As to why they left Connecticut, Maude Gage Pellerin's book "The Story of Hatley" lists Joel Hall Ives as among the associates of Ebenezer Hovey in securing land from the Canadian government and then selling it to smaller landholders. This is how the area around Hatley was first settled. Also according to Mrs Pellerin, Joel Hall Ives secured the first letters patent, or deed, to Lot 6, Range 2. This was the time (the 1790s) when the Eastern Townships was first opened up to settlement. Many of the early settlers were from Connecticut and New Hampshire. They did not come up to Canada for religious reasons or anything like that. Some of them were speculating in land, some were seeking adventure, I suppose, and some just wanted a new start. I expect the Ives children would have gone to a little school located on the Common in Hatley, since Mrs Pellerin also says that the land for this school was donated by Joel Ives. Charleston Academy, at the end of the Common, was built in 1830, so the younger Ives children likely went there. I'm not sure when Joel removed to Georgeville. You can sometimes find copies of the Story of Hatley for sale on the Internet. I think you would like it. "Forests and Clearings", about Stanstead Township more broadly, can also be found and is very informative.

Cheers,

Susan

Thank you for looking, Marion Blanche Bagley was Blanch Pentecost Bagley's daughter however I did have the wrong birth date for Marion which I have now corrected. Is Westmou an abbreviation for Westmount? I had Marion's last place of residence as 439 Grosvenor Avenue, Montreal. Finally could the letter B have been a tipo as her husband's name was George Gordon Laird.

I can't find a birth for Nancy myself, but I did find her on a number of family trees, with her birthdate given as March 23, 1840, and her parents as John Kenneson and Lydia Haynes, both of them born Epson, NH. Her name is given as Nancy Maria Kenneston. I would be surprised if she were Native. She is certainly most unlikely to be Metis, they were mostly in the West. Native ancestry is not all that common among New Englanders and people from the Eastern Townships of Quebec, because they simply didn't meet Native people all that often. I'm not saying it never happened, just that it is uncommon. French Canadians are more likely to have Native ancestry, in my experience. This is a link to one of the family trees, but there are several if you look on Ancestry: http://trees.ancestry.ca/tree/17764077/person/18030799229?ss...=

Amasa Cilley was Asa Parker Cilley's younger brother. I still have not found out who Slaty Thomas's parents were! Amasa's other wives were Nancy M. Kenneson whom he m. 23 Dec 1858 and Margery Thrush whom he married in Nov. 1873. Amasa and Nancy had a son named John Dearborn Cilley b. 28 Aug 1859 in QUE who died 22 Aug. 1910. John Dearborn married Mary Ellen Douglas in 1902 in QUE and they had three sons: Colin Douglas, John Howard and Kenneth Dearborn Cilley.

The A.P. CIlley that I mentioned (married to Elvira Huntington) is Asa Parker Cilley (1824-1890), a son of Thomas Cilley. His three wives were Fanny Marion Lovejoy, Elvira L Huntington and Myra Jane Hannah Bowen. I think that Amasa was Asa's brother, but I don't have any proof of that. Amasa and Slatey are buried in the Burbank Cemetery, near Barnston: http://www.interment.net/data/canada/qc/stanstead/burbank/
Where some of you report A. P. CILLEY, do you know if this is Amasa CILLEY, b. 17 Mar 1826 somewhere in southern Quebec ? I still am searching for the roots of the 1868 spouse Slaty THOMAS. Most of these Message Board posts never give any of the dates and places that they might have and would be willing to share with the world.
