JOSEPH PARKER OF COMPTON COUNTY QUEBEC

Joseph 1834-1910 was married to Mary Jane HAMILTON. After her death Joseph married in 1899 to a Mary KERR as found in Eaton Congregational records. My theory is that Mary might have been Mary Ann MORRISON who was the widow of Dawson Kerr. Can anyone corroborate this theory? I have not been able to find anyone who knows of Joseph's second marriage. His son Ernest was living with Joseph and Mary in the 1901 census.
Thanks for any help!
Janet

My husband is a descendant of Donald MacRitchie of Five Penny Ness and Mary MacDonald of Knockaird. He is connected to Mary MacRitchie Brown and Rae Brown Wallace (a cousin). How are you connected to the family? I am putting together a small book on my husband's family but I am struggling with the MacRitchie name. There seem to have been some families in Five Penny Ness, Habost, Swainbost that I think they are all connected as Donald is such a frequent name. There was one family in Borve, one in Barvas and the rest, I think were in Uig in the 14 penny land or thereabouts. Would like to hear of any information that you have. Also do you know where Peindonald was located? Was it near Timsgarry or Ardroil?
Carolyn

Did you do include him based on the information that I gave you or did you find out about him from another source?

Regards Dan

There are lots of tin type photos, regular photos, newspaper clippings, handkerchief all very old. William R. Hassall's obit is in it also, showing he died March 3, 1888 at age 38. Also Edward Bickerton died June 6, 1888 at age 58.
If this is part of your family, all I want is what I paid for it and postage. The album is very big and looks like it holds alot of history for someone. The state that most of the info is on is out of Ohio.
Just reply to this and I will get back with you.

Dan,
I did mean the first Norman. There were way too few given names in use at that time! I do have the information from Peter MacDonald's website. The 2nd Norman and his wife Maggie had 13 children. I remember some of them quite well from when I was a child in Massachusetts. At any given time half of them were not speaking to the other half. There was some feud about the gaelic family bible and who had it. It could be a great source, if only we knew the answer to that question.
Betsey

Hi Betsey. Angus was born about 1784 which would make him older than any of his siblings known to us. The Papers of the Seaforth Estate shows Angus living in the township of Balnicol (township adjacent to Carnish) in 1819. Balnicol is now part of the township of Ardroil. Angus is still in Balnicol in a rental in 1824. Angus immigrated to Cape Breton Island around 1828.

You asked the question "Do you have any information on who the first Kenneth Buchanan's parents were?". I assume that you meant the first Norman. We have no information about Norman's parents.

I recieved a fair amount of information on the descendants on Norman Buchanan and Kirsty MacDonald from Peter K MacDonald. Are you aware of this information?

Regards, Dan

Hi- Thank you for the information. Kenneth was my great-great grandfather. His son Norman was my great grandfather. The family did emigrate to Quebec, in 1857. Norman's wife, Maggie Nicholson Buchanan, lived until 1940! Norman and Maggie had 13 children, almost all of whom moved to New England. Their daughter Flora was my grandmother. The older generation is buried in Lingwick Cemetery in Compton, Quebec.
I have no information about Angus Buchanan. He was not on the 1851 Scotland census, but maybe he hadn't been born then. Do you have any information on who the first Kenneth Buchanan's parents were? Or Kirsty MacDonald's? I had her parents listed as a Finlay MacDonald and Katherine MacKenzie, but have found nothing on Finlay. Supposedly, Kirsty's sister Marion married a Kenneth Nicholson and they were the parents of Maggie, making my great grandparents first cousins...
Thanks for responding- Betsey

Hi Betsey. I just came across your post of 10 Feb 2010 this morning. Based upon research by genealogists and others, I believe that my great-great-great grandfather Angus Buchanan was the son of Norman Buchanan and Kirsty MacDonald who lived at Carnish, Uig, Isle of Lewis. However, I have been trying to find conclusive evidence of this relationship.

To the best of my knowledge, two of Norman and Kirsty's children, Kenneth and Ann, immigrated to Quebec. I believe that three of them, Donald, Murdo and John, remained in Uig. Angus immigrated to Cape Breton Island around 1828.

If you desire more information on this family, please contact me. If you know anything about Angus Buchanan, please let me know.

Dan

Hi, my husband is the great grandson of Matthew Boyd and Louisa Douglass via Stewart Franklyn Boyd. Stewart was married to Hanorah E Considine and had one child, Veronica Sybella Boyd before dying in 1919 of the spanish flu. Stewart then married Margaret Slattery from Tipparary and had 3 sons and 3 daughters. Eleanor 1920, Margaret 1922, Stewart 1925, Ross 1928, Hazel 1929 and Jackie, birth year unknown, died in Korea. His mother, Veronica, also known as Vera married John Clarence Gaton in 1932 and only had one successful pregancy, my husband, John Stewart Gaton. John has 3 sons and one daughter.
We have worked backwards to Nathaniel Boyd and Sarah Stewart in Argentuil, Quebec. We know that Nathaniel's parents were Samuel and Mary Boyd who stayed in Ireland. We know very little about his wife, Sarah Stewart's family other than her parents may have been James Stewart and Elizabeth Marks.
Appreciate any information, thanks
Leslie

I have been researching my ancestors Jesse Hunt and Sarah Stokes who were the children of two families of early settlers in Bury, Quebec. The two children were married, I believe, in Bury. I know Sarah's father was named Thomas Stokes and she had a brother Thomas, but have not verified the mother's name. I have the obituary for her brother,Thomas Stokes, probably the son of the Thomas Stokes who came over from England. I would like to exchange information.

Richard, The Bennetts of Bury are in my family tree through George Bennett's marriage to Ellen Jane Parsons. The Sharman's are also in my records as persons who witnessed baptisms of children in my family. The Parsons family history at Bishops has a lot of information about the families that settled in Bury. I live in the states (Michigan) and I have visited the area searching for family information.

I have a book "Picture Visit through Bury" printed in 1980 but there are no pictures of a train wreck.
Perhaps Bishop's University in Lennoxville, Quebec could help you. They have a tremendous amount of Eastern Townships history.
Also try the Compton County Historical Museum in Eaton Corner, Quebec. It is only open in June thru Sept. So you could write to them now at 374 Rte 253, P.O. Box 967, Cookshire, Quebec JOB 1MO
Thanks for responding! I am hoping to find the parents of the immigrants. I believe the immigrants were all born in Carnish, Uig,Isle Lewis. They were: John E. Macleod b. 1813, d. 1899 m. Dorothy Macaskill b. 1817 d. 1893
Kenneth Nicolson b. 1786 d. 1868 m. Catherine Buchanan b. 1791 d. 1874 All these people are buried in Lingwick, Compton, Quebec.
Norman Nicolson b. 1770 d. 1860 m. Marion MacDonald- I don't know if they immigrated, or if it was just their daughter Peggy and her husband Kenneth Buchanan. His parents I think had died earlier. They were Norman Buchanan b. 1751 and Kirsty MacDonald b. about 1770.
I think Marion and Kirsty may have been sisters, but I don't know who their parents were. I am pretty sure Norman and Kenneth Nicolson were brothers. Everyone was probably cousins of some kind.
My grandmother still knew some Gaelic, although she and most of her sisters and brothers emigrated to New England from Canada in the early 1900s.
Thanks for any information you can find about their immigration to Canada and their parents' names.

Betsey Ellis

I have a subscription to Ancestry.ca so I am able to look up the church records. Mary's death registration has her maiden name. If you give me an email address I can forward copies of what I found. I am at smithd@vaniercollege.qc.ca
Dave

Thank you for the reply.

I just looked at what I had on the family, and I had her death date, but it was not sourced, so I probably copied it from another tree. Was the death date in the Drouin? How did you learn her maiden name? I was unsuccessful in finding a marriage record in England as well.

I have sourced her on my tree with three Canadian Censuses, including the one you cited.

What are good sources for finding immigration years and origins on immigrants to Canada? I hit a brick wall finding anything on her and Timothy in England, especially since I do not know what part they are from.

According to the 1851 census, Timothy, wife Mary and thre of his children were born in England. The others were born in Bury. If you need a copy of the census email me
smithd@vaniercollege.qc.ca
Dave

Amy Elizabeth (ANDREWS) CLARK of Bury, b. 1855

I am seeking the parents of this woman. I only found three records for her. Records point to a Quebec birth.

At age 16 on 1871 Census, she is living with the John and Adeline Leonard family of Bury. It is unclear whether they were extended family or whether she was a domestic. She then married Horace Clark as a minor in 1872 in the Bury and Lingwick Church of England. In 1881, she has three children with Horace. I believe they immigrated to Vermont before the 1891 Census.

I am unable to find any records connecting this couple to England. I would guess they came over to Quebec as a married couple with at least one young child, James, b. 1832.

I am seeking Mary (Anne)'s maiden name and the area(s) of England they came from. I have done quite of bit of searching of baptism and marriage records in the UK collections and came up with nothing.
