I am searching for descendants of Ada Brown Teller, born June 5, 1890, likely in Waterville, Quebec (where she was baptised in St John's Anglican Church on July 21). She married (Sept 20, 1905) Rans Curry Teller (Waterville Congregational Church). Their son, Royce Arthur was born June 23, 1906. Ada later resumed her maiden name and Royce also took the name of Brown. He (Royce Arthur Brown) died in Connecticut in August 1988. Does anyone know what happened to Ada? Did she remarry or relocate? Would love to know what happened to her. Her parents were Elizabeth (Reed) and Aaron Benjamin Brown.

Royce was my great-grandfather on my mother's side! I never knew that his real last name was Teller as opposed to Brown. Are you sure about this? As for Ada, I never had the opportunity to meet her. Sorry I can't help with that but I will ask my mother about it.

Hi Donna,

Glad you got in touch. Yes, I am sure about the Teller business. Ada Brown and Ransom Currey Teller were married on September 20, 1905, at the Congregational Church in Waterville, Quebec. Ransom was a painter, the son of Alvin Hall Teller and Sadie Miller. Ada, as you know, was the daughter of Aaron Benjamin Brown and Elizabeth Reed. Elizabeth was my grandfather's sister. Royce was born June 23, 1906. I don't know what happened between Ransom and Ada, but by 1911 she was listing herself on the census as divorced and had resumed the name of Brown. Royce was also a Brown by then. Ransom went back to the States (he was an American). When he registered for the draft in 1917, he said he was married, with three children. He also registered for the draft in 1942 and listed his next of kin as his wife, Hazel Teller. He died in 1976.

Since I posted that message, I have discovered that Ada did marry again, to Ernest Astbury, in 1918. Did you know about that?

By the way, my father remembered Royce very well, but I'm pretty sure he didn't know about Rans Teller. I guess he thought that Royce was a child Ada had had out of wedlock. Not that this was something Dad would ever have mentioned. Royce was five years older than Dad and was with his grandparents (Benjamin and Betty) a lot and they used to visit my grandparents with him. Captain Brown (not sure what he was a captain of, but Dad always called him that) was devoted to Royce and spoiled him a great deal.

Do you have pictures of Royce or Ada? I would love to see those.

Cheers,

Susan

Hi Donna,
I am enclosing the links for Ada's marriage and Royce's baptism, in case you would like to look at them on Drouin.

The links seem to work. Notice that Royce's father was not at the baptism. Perhaps things were already not working out between him and Ada. I think I asked before, but do you have any pictures of Ada or Royce?

Cheers,

Susan

Hi Susan,
Sorry it has taken me this long to respond to your message, I have been busy completing my M.S. Anyway, thank you so much for the info. It is very interesting! As for pics of Royce, I know that my mother, aunt, and uncle have quite a few. I will ask them about getting copies for you. Of course, I will need an address to send them to. Speaking of which, where do you live? I am in Connecticut.
My grandmother, Cecilia M. Brown Demers- the daughter of Royce Brown and Almina Bijolle Brown-passed away in 2007, and my grandfather (Cecilia's husband), Lawrence G. Demers, passed away this March.
I am so happy that we have connected. I love learning more about my family tree and the history surrounding their lives. I looking for to hearing from you.
P.S. I was not able to look at the links that you provided because they require a sign-in and password.
Donna =)

Hi Donna,

Thanks for your nice message. It is so much fun to connect like this. I would love to see any pictures you might have. You can scan them to me at sreed85@sympatico.ca. Or, if you actually want to send me something, Susan Reed, 662 Liverpool, Montreal, Quebec H3K 2S7. As you can see, I haven't strayed too far from my origins.

Yes, I realized afterwards that you wouldn't be able to access those records without a membership. If you send me your e-mail address, I will copy out what they say for you. My theory about Ransom Curry Teller is that he might already have been married when he married Ada and she found out about it later. Otherwise, I can't imagine. Divorce was very unusual in small town Quebec at the turn of the century. And even if you were divorced, I would expect that you would keep your husband's name, especially if there was a child involved. For Ada to resume her maiden name and change Royce's name, it must have been something serious. I can find a lot of stuff about Rans - his later marriage and all his children, and this is interesting stuff, but doesn't explain what happened between him and Ada. Likely we will never know.

If you are interested in Ada's family, I know a lot about them and can send you some stuff. I don't have any pictures of Aunt Betty and Captain Brown. Wish I did.

Cheers,

Susan

I would love to know everything you have found on the family, especially info on grampy's (Royce's) family/extended family. What relation were you to Royce? I swear that I have a hard time disentangling who is related to who sometimes, even with the info right in front of me. LOL
I think it is awesome that you live in Canada; I have been wanted to visit for some time now. Perhaps we will get the chance to meet if I am ever able to make it up that way. I am hoping to do so within the next year or two.
I have been telling my mother (Lorraine Jeanette Demers) and aunt (Joanne Marie Demers) about our conversations; they are really interested in all of this too! My mom said that she will work on getting together some photos for you, though it may take a little time to dig them out and sort them from all of the others that they are stored with.
I look forward to hearing from you again soon. Thank you!!!
a bientôt,
Donna =)
