British American Land Company-Eastern Townships
Would anyone know the name of the ship that brought over many of the settlers in 1836 from England. And would there be a ship's list somewhere? Many of these settlers went to (Robinson) (Victoria) (Canterbury) (Bury) area. Some of these settlers surnames are listed in H. Carl Mayhew's book "History of Canterbury, Quebec".

Re: British American Land Company-Eastern Townships
Who were your ancestors ? Have you read a book by H. Carl Mayhew "History of Canterbury, Quebec". It is a gem and would give you a lot of information. This book is out of print but maybe you could find a copy somewhere. I know Harvard University, Bishops University, and the Compton County Museum have copies. Also "History of Compton County" by L.D. Channell. This book can be borrowed from libraries or you can purchase a copy.

Re: British American Land Company-Eastern Townships
My GGGGGrandfather was Amos Alden who came over in 1836 settling in Bury on Victoria road. I have census records but they don't give spouse's name so I haven't been able to trace them back to England.

Re: British American Land Company-Eastern Townships
My people (PRINCE) emigrated from Whiteparish, Wiltshire, and settled in Bury. Would like to confirm location from 1842 census. What is the best access to these records? Thanks.

Re: British American Land Company-Eastern Townships
My copy of the 1842 Census has a Richard Prince (Farmer) on Victoria road one half of Range 11. There were four people listed in the household however 2 more were absent, all natives of England. They are listed as 2 males between 5 and 14 years old, 1 married male 30 - 60 years old (Richard), 1 married female 14 - 45 years old. They had 2 cattle, 1 horse and 1 sheep on 75 acres of land. The census only gives the name of the man of the house. They would have been my ancesters neighbours.
Hope this helps, Jeff

Re: British American Land Company-Eastern Townships
I requested the 1842 census microfilm from the Canada Public Archives, Ottawa, Ontario back in 1974 to my City Library in Springfield, Mass. USA which they sent down. The reel is: C-732 #2753 It lists James Sharman, non-proprietor of real property. No other names of family members are listed. Lists produce raised, livestock owned, acres owned, acres improved. I have a layout map, Canterbury Quebec 1863 showing where the families lived. Again the Canada Archives. "History of Compton County" by L.S. Channell will give you great insight into these immigrants. I have Berwicks who have married into my family from Bury Quebec. Contact me and perhaps I can help you further.
