Eastern Township and Missisquoi Rootsweb lists join both!

I wrote this to QC-ETANGLO list ...

It’s always been a little funny that we have 2 Rootsweb groups that share an area but we do. We are the Rootsweb group of the ( historic) county of Missisquoi you can see map of the area here http://bit.ly/13QK2JX ( and it’s different from the modern Brome- Missiquoi region of today) we cover a little area of the great big area that your Eastern Township Rootweb group covers .. but if you have any folks who lived in our area you should know about us too.

We may be small but we are very active ! I am the founder/ moderator of the group, my name is Nancy Cunningham, we have an old web page here http://bit.ly/13QK2JX but we have moved all out activity to our new research blog which can be found here http://missisquoigenealogy.blogspot.com/

This group has always used it’s group power to accomplish things that further research in our area – now- a- days it has a fancy name, it’s called “ crowd sourcing. “
In the past, we banded together to transcribe and index the census , then we took on transcribing a batch of Notary records and the last 2 years we have been transcribing parish records from churches in our area that have scanned original images posted ( but not indexed) on Family Search. Fun facts here http://bit.ly/13QKHLk

We have transcribe over 5,000 records ( or about 7500 individual baptism, marriage and burial parish records) , we just believe in making it a little easier for those who follow us to research in our area and know that the more folks connecting and sharing will help us all !

Check us out :
Join our Rootsweb goup too:
http://bit.ly/13QMIHk

Follow the blog ( view/subscribe)
http://missisquoigenealogy.blogspot.com/

Volunteer in our transcribing project ( it’s super easy and fun )
http://bit.ly/13QLfkm
We use a snazzy volunteer sign up method called Sign up Genius !

Thanks Nancy cunnningb2@gmail.com
Missisquoigenealogy@gmail.com
Realized that I did not reply. The address is
http://news.google.com/newspapers
this will get you to the main index, the newspapers are listed alphabetically
The Stanstead Journal has many issues on line, if you start reading for relevant dates you may find some info. There are published indexes to the Stanstead Journal which give info on births deaths etc. You may want to check if any library near you has a copy. Next time I head to the Genealogy library in Boston I will check their copy for you - it won't be for several months

The Thetford Mines Historical Society sells some of the books mentioned tied to areas in Old Leeds/Megantic Cty and Lothbinere Twp.. For the most part the one I have (Leeds) is made up of family histories from the area. The English sections are there because they are the last English families left - others have blended or moved. However, great pics if your family is in the book.

Also in case you want to go on a time travel summer trip - Kinnear's Mills ( Leeds) very close to St. Sylvestre and Inverness is a Quebec Historic site. The village has gotten caught in a Brigadoon time warp and you simply must visit. The cemeteries of the English/Scottish/Irish settlers are full of easy to read tombstones.

The best time to go is the 2nd Sat in July (double check) when the Orangeman's parade takes place. This is the same parade that has been going on for 150 years. The actual parade and pik-nik is just outside the Kinnear's Mills - people in town and at the Church/Tourist location can tell you where.

The fife and drum are the ones they have been using forever and you never know whom you will meet. I ran into 4th cousins - chatted a bit and discovered we were double 4th cousins ( 2 brothers married 2 sisters) - more interesting was that the names were identical to those who arrived in 1830's.

So you never know whom you will meet. There is a big country dinner at the old local school (closed and now community centre) in the early evening. Great biscuits, chicken pot pie and all you can eat desert pies; my 15 year old quite enjoyed that bit.

Searching for marriage record of my great-great grandparents, Octave Gileau and Cordelia Duclos in 1860-61. Lived in Orford, Quebec but could have gotten married in Vermont, New Hampshire, or Maine. Their 4 children were baptised at Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours, Stuckely-Nord, Sherbrooke between 1862-69. I would appreciate any information about the Gileau and Duclos families in Eastern Quebec.

Bonjour rolande
I am afraid that Francais is not my first language though I managed to work out most of what you were saying.
Many thanks for replying-
I don't think we have a common ancestor though as my Veres came over right from Hampshire? England via France between 1852 and 1861. Your people came over to Quebec long before that. The question is why they went there in the first place??
As for the Elizabeth Christian thread (which I can't find now!!)
Elizabeth must have either married Thomas Pierce in either NYC or else England/Isle of Mann because she was already a Pierce before they moved to Ontario in 1846 (birth of last child). So one would be looking for Pierces not Christian if you take my meaning. I only found one doc to elude to the Isles of Mann connection but as it is a commmon name there I think it is probably correct.
Sorry that I couldn't be of more help-
bye for now- KS

I don't believe it was. Warwick township is separated by Tingwick Township from Shipton Township. It may have been part of Shipton, but had since been divided further to its own town. Please use the map in the article link I sent you, and compare it to a modern map. Shipton Township became part of Richmond County; Warwick Township was always a part of Arthabaska County. As I said, Tingwick Township separates the two of them.
Depending on which map you look at, Quebec's Eastern Township was divided into English-named Townships or French-named Counties. Sometimes, the names overlapped; others differed. In my own research, I stuck to either one or the other, which made things simple. If you were researching English ancestors, go with the English township names and non-Catholic churches. If they were French, stick with the French-named cities or town names and the Catholic church records. It is, as you say, difficult bouncing back and forth between the two in your search.

Actually, Danville was a village in the township of Shipton. Warwick is both a village and a town within it. All this is similar to the New England custom of town names and the villages located within them, still found today. Many of the French-named villages incorporate the town name in them, such as St-Guillaume d'Upton, St-Félix de Wendover, St-Paul de Chester, etc.

The following might be helpful:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Eastern_Townships

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estrie

This too might help:

http://www.uelac.org/SirJohnJohnson/eastern-townships.php

You can compare the map found at this site to a present-day roadmap of Quebec. A knowledge of the older French counties would also help as well: Yamaska, Bagot, Drummond, Nicolet, Arthabaska, Mégantic, Richmond, Wolfe, Compton, Sherbrooke, Stanstead, Brome, Mississquoi, Rouville, St-Hyacinthe, St-Jean, Iberville, and Frontenac (hopefully I remembered them all in the Eastern Townships) is another way to orient your research. Estrie is the new name for the Eastern Townships region, but only established lately (don't remember the year exactly) but covers the entire region. Hope this is somewhat helpful an explanation and good luck in your research.

I get very confused about the records of my ancetors who lived in the Eastern Townships in the mid and late 1800's. Either they moved a whole lot or the names of the places changed. Was Warwick once Kinglsey or vice versa? Was Danvile once Shipton. Could someone either give me some background about this or refer me to a website where it is explained in very simple language.

I found Nathan Hawes marrying Abigail Harvey, Hatley Church of England in 1819 and William Hawes marrying Eliza Johnson, 1820, same town, same church. They were witnesses at each other's wedding, so I imagine they were brothers. Hawes was quite a common surname in the Hatley-Waterville area, even in the 1960s when I was growing up.

Hi there has been a lot of controversy over David White and Betsey Bailey. There is a lady in Calgary also working on the Betsey geneology. We have figured out that David White and Elizabeth Jane White are sister and brother, not knowing who Davids mother is, but Elizabeth was born to David and Nurcy White. David is our David's father. We have documents showing this. David who is married to Nurcy is the son of David White and Aryssa Skyes. I hope to get this all entered very soon on ancestry.

Our roots start in England with a move to Dorchester, MA in 1635. The family was split between Loyalists and Revolutionists. Shortly after the Revolutionary War, some of the family returned to England and others went to Halifax, NS. I have the genealogy from John Hawes, Haws, Hawse (depends on verbal communication in that era) to present. John Hawes (1827-1907) was my G Grandfather. His father was born in England, he married a Banchford, Blanchford in Halifax, NS. My great grandfather returned to Dorchester, MA with his family (12 children) in 1856. He had many relatives in the Dorchester, MA area.

Note: There are numerous Hawes families in the Halifax area.

Captain Ken Hawes
Annapolis, MD
captain-ken@comcast.net

There are quite a few messages on the Boards about David White, Betsey Bailey, Arisa Skeyes (sometimes quite a different spelling of this) and their connections. A number of people are interested in them. I'm interested in the Bailey connection myself, but haven't found much. I do know quite a bit about Mrs Hanks, who took in some of the White-Bailey children, if you want information about her. For David White, I am enclosing this link, which should take you to someone who has info on him. http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/f/a/r/Helen-Louis...

Thank you so much for this reference. I'll locate this book right away.

Before relocating to Quebec, Simpson Jenne lived in a ridge-top Vermont village known as Chippenhook (near Clarendon). I've visited there and it is much as you describe his later home; someone told me that Chippenhook reminded him of the mythical Brigadoon -- remote and peaceful. It's nice to know that he found a second "Brigadoon" to make his later home.

Re Simpson Jenne, first settler of St Armand East, Canada East, 1789: there is a very interesting, detailed write up about SJ in the book: Contributions to the History of the Eastern Townships, by Cyrus Thomas (John Lovell, Montreal, 1866, pp52-56). Jenne Road, at the foot of Mount Pinnacle, is my favourite place to go for a drive - so peaceful and sparsely occupied, as yet! The area which was called St. Armand East in times past, is now known as the township and village of Frelighsburg, Qc. I'm sure that the archivist at the Missisquoi Historical Society in Stanbridge East would be able to find more info for you. There are still Jenne's living in the county, I believe.

Hope this is of use.
Anne
