Barlows of Tingwick, Quebec

Barlows of Tingwick, Quebec

Classification: Query
Surnames: Barlow
I'm a descendant of the Tingwick Barlows, specifically from Roderick Barlow (b. 6 January 1854, d. 24 March 1922) and Mary Ann Lord (b. 11 April 1855, d. 6 September 1933). I have been investigating my ancestry for a couple of years now, and I am interested in connecting with other descendants of Roderick and Mary Ann. Family oral history says that many of their children settled in Vermont, but I know there are some who remained in Québec. I'd be especially interested in older family photos, if any exist. Roderick was my Great Great Grandfather, and while I have photographs of my other twice great-grandparents, I don't have any going back that far from the Barlow line.

I have a wealth of information for the Barlows, going back to about 1800 in Québec, but of course I'd like more. I'd be more than willing to share what I have with anyone who can shed some more light on my ancestry. I have traced back as far as Henry Augustin Barlow (b. c. 1765, d. c. 1825 in St. Giles, Québec, although I can't confirm this), but this appears to be a dead end for many. It'd be great to know some more about where he came from.

Hi, from various census records in Quebec here are children of Roderick and Mary Ann
with approx birth years.

Frederick 1879
Mildred 1881
Lindsay 1883
Joseph 1884
Hulby 1886 - not sure of this name
Sinclair 1888
Clifford 1890
Chester 1891
Etta 1893
Vernon 1898
Shirley 1900

all born Quebec

Chester crossed to US in 1913 and is shown in census records there with a wife named Vera and children: Kenneth born 1919, Gordon born 1926
Chester died Newport, New Orleans VT Aug. 1, 1959 - parents shown as Roderick Barlow and Mary Lord
died of pithatic leucemia

also found his marriage Sep 20, 1916 Coverntry, Orleand VT
Chester A. Barlow, father Rodrick, mother Mary
married
Vera May Fairbrother, father Rodney , mother Mabel Andrews

*********
Clifford Barlow crossed to US 1909 and is also found in VT
1910 census has him single
1920 has him with wife Emma and children Edith born 1916, John 1918
Clifford Samuel Barlow died Jan. 7, 1930 East Coventry, VT
parents Roderick Barlow, Mary Ann Lord
spouse Emma E. Tiedman
informant is Hulsey Barlow, Newport, VT
cause of death acute appendicitis, rupturel appendix, peritonitis
operation: appendectomy

so I guess it is likely that Hulby, son of Roderick and Mary Ann was actually Hulsey

I did not find marriage for Clifford

but I took a look in VT marriages to see if there were any other Barlow marriages and found

Huloy Rodrick Barlow age 26, married Hazle M. Fairbrother age 17
Aug. 16, 1911
his parents Rodrick Barlow and Mary Ann Lord
her parents D.W. Fairbrother and Jennie S. Collins

Etta Alberta Barlow, age 20, married Arthur Edward Webster age 19
Dec. 22, 1913 Newport, VT
her parents Roderick Barlow and M.A. Lord
his parents Almer E. Webster and Florence Steven

** I had thought that the two Fairbrother girls might have been sisters but apparently not

1920 census has Arthur Webster living with his parents Elmer and Florence and he is listed as divorced
I haven't found Etta after her marriage

Halsey/Huley Barlow is in 1920/30/40 census with wife Hazel and children:
Roy 1914, Thelma 1918

He died June 11, 1942 of angina pectoris
parents Roderick Barlow and mary Ann Lord
death index has him as Huley R. Barlow, image looks like Hulcy

I looked for any other deaths in VT that show father as Roderick Barlow
and found Sinclair Barlow
died Oct. 17, 1918 Newport, VT
fireman, born Canada
father Roderick Barlow,mother Mary Ward
died of bronchial pneumonia and influenza

so whoever gave the info didn't know Mary Ann's right surname

no mention of a wife, but I found that he is in the WW1 draft card index as
Sinclair George Barlow born Tingwick, Quebec and it says
he lives Newport, VT and has a wife and 2 children

since he died in 1918 he will not be in 1920 census but his wife and kids should be

I looked in 1920 census for any Barlow families and by accident found a Fred Barlow age 40 so born about 1880 Canada with wife Catherine 37 born VT , son Clyde 13 born VT and father in law Harley Ryther 66 born Canada

so good chance he is Frederick

I did not find any Barlows that fit for Sinclair's family though

I went to VT births and found one child for Sinclair
it says
No name, premature birth/still birth Oct. 17, 1918 - 3rd child of mother
father Sinclair Barlow age 29
mother Muriel Nickerson age 27
both born Canada

so this stillbirth was the same day as death of Sinclair

and I found death of Muriel only 4 days later
Muriel Barlow age 27, born Canada
died Oct. 21, 1918 bronchial pneumonia and influenza
parents Charles Nickerson and Adelien Lowell

so looks like both died during the 1918 influenza epidemic that hit

I also found a death for Frederick Barlow born 1879 Quebec died Dec. 5, 1966
Derby, VT
parents Roderick Barlow and Mary Lord
wife Catherine Ryther
informant Clyde Barlow

I did not find a death for Etta as Barlow or Webster, nor did I find another marriage for her , nor any children in births database so I am wondering if she might have returned to Canada

1921 census for Tingwick has Lindsay Barlow 38, with wife Florence 36, and Stella 3,
and Jan Phurter age 78, widow, mother in law

in the image Jan's surname could be Phurter but also m,ay not be, look like it could be Thursey/Phursey ?

there is also a find a grave entry for R. Lindsay Barlow birth about 1882 died 1948 Danville, Quebec

there is a marriage in the Drouin records for Stella May Barlow, daughter of Royal Lindsay Barlow and Florence Estella Barlow to Andrew Hasland Horan, Nov. 15, 1941
Richmond, Quebec

Joseph Henry Barlow born Jan. 10, 1884 Fenwick, Quebec Canada, fireman, wife Edna is listed in MA naturalization records - date of admission May 25, 1920

could Fenwick be Tingwick misspelled ? Ah, yes, he is in WW2 draft reg. cards and same birthdate but shown as Tingwick this time.
wife Edna and he is employed by Charlestown engine house, Charlsetown, MA

he is in census with wife Edna and children: Ervin A. born about 1917
Edna and Ervin both born MA in 1930 Ervin is Irving
in both years Joseph is shown immigrating 1905
1940 they are indexed as Bilow

There is a Mason's membership entry that shows Joseph born Jan. 10. 1884 Quebec, fireman, lived Somerville, MA, died Dec. 26, 1976 New Hampshire - this makes sense as his son went to NH

there is a find a grave entry with image of the headstone which has
Shirley Irena born Nov. 9, 1899 died Feb. 9. 1925
Edith May born Nov. 21, 1895 died May 21, 1897
Annie Maud born May 20. 1877 died Jan. 11, 1881
daughters of Roderick & Mary Barlow

it says they are buried in Trout Brook cemetery, Quebec
I looked at what other Barlows are buried there and there are
Roderick born Jan. 6, 1854 died March 24, 1922
and Mary A. Lord, his wife born April 11, 1855 died Sept. 6, 1933

so the two who are missing - Etta after her marriage to Arthur Webster
and Mildred

so I went to familysearch.org to see if they had anything more and found Mildred
Mildred Lucy Barlow married Sept. 12, 1910 Chelsea, MA to Patrick Jos. Gaffney
her parents Rodrick Barlow and Mary Lord, his Patrick Gaffney and Catherine McKeon

they have quite a bit with the deaths I found for you above, but they also have marriage for Sinclair G. Barlow and Muriel Nickerson, April 2, 1914 Boston

there is also a birth for a child of Sinclair and Muriel born Feb. 9, 1913 Boston female, not named (index entry says male, but image says female)

I think I may have found the 2 children of Sinclair and Muriel
living with their Aunt Mildred Gaffney in MA
1920 census has
Gaffney
Patrick 47, Mildred 36
Barlow
Dorris 7, Lillian 5 (both listed as nieces)

I think this is all I can find for now.
