Rowsell and Snow of Coley's Point, Bay Roberts, NL
I have been researching the Rowsell Surname in Nfld. and has a suspicion that the Rowsells of Pushthrough are of the same family as the Rowsells of Coleys Point, Bay Roberts. The Snow surname is very prolific in the area with marriages into the Russell branch of the Rowsells of Bay Roberts and Coleys Point. Has anyone done any research in this area of Nfld. with regard to the Snow surname and variations of Rowsell....i.e. Rosewell, Rousell and Russell. WIth the help of Allen Beagan we have completed most of the missing links in the N.D.Bay branch of the Rowsell Family Tree. I did read a book written by a NDBay Rowsell named Loderick Rowsell wherein he mentioned that he was told that his family were related to the Rowsells of the Quebec shore. Any reply is appreciated.

Re: Rowsell and Snow of Coley's Point, Bay Roberts, NL
I am a Rowsell living in Harrington Harbour Quebec on the Lower North Shore Our ancestors came from Pushthrough NFLD . The Guy who came here first was John (mountain) Rowsell. He had one son Albert and two daughters at this time .He then had more children after he seteled here. My grandfather Henry was one. We have been unable to go back beyond him. He was I believe a bit of a pirate. A Rowsell I met while in NFLD in holidays told me that all the Rowsell's in NFLD came from three brothers that came from England. Re: Rowsell & Snow of Coley's Point, Bay Roberts, NL
Paul, thank you for your response...my email address is lgrowsell@yahoo.com......I have been told about John Mountain Rowsell by Sharon Ranson of St. John's.......I have also been told that a family Bible exists where Edward Rowsell's birth date is recorded as November 17th, 1817 and that there is no record of his place of birth. In at least the first generation the family spelled the surname as ROUSELL. as did my great grandfather Henry Rousell and his father and grandfather. Do you know who has possession of that family Bible. I have a Rowsell family bible in my possession for another line of the family going back to a marriage in 1798. This relates to the Notre Dame Bay family line. My earliest confirmed ancestor was married at Harbour Grace Church of England in 1783, born abt. 1760 I would guess. From my research I am inclined to believe that all the Rowsells / Rousells in Nfld. come from the same projenitor. I am trying to identify that person and from whence he came to Nfld. Historical records seem to confirm that most of the English settlers in various parts of Nfld. came from Conception Bay families who either came to Nfld. from Old England or New ENgland. Any response from you is appreciated. Cheers Lloyd

Rowsell & Snow, Coley's Point, Conception Bay
Great to hear from you......Nfld. is short for Newfoundland, formerly Terra Nova or Isle de Terra Nova.......my father and his parents used the word "ain't" so we must be related...Smiles....My grandfather's parents were Henry Rousell who married Mary Morgan in 1884, both at age 24 yrs. Please write to me direct at " lgrowsell@yahoo.ca" with a copy of this message and how you know that Rousell was changed to Rowsell and when this happened in your family line. I was born in 1944 and live in Victoria, British Columbia. Maybe we can help each other by sharing family history information. Best wishes Lloyd George Henry

Hi Lloyd. Sorry i have to reply to you on this message board again. I tried to send you an email twice but the email address must be wrong or something:-) Oh my grandad told me before he died that Rousell was how our name was originally spelled. And he also said something about our relatives originally coming from France, but thats going back centuries most likely. I dont think he knew when our name was changed to Rowsell. I asked my dad when you replied to my post about Newfoundland and he told me that we have got some relatives that live in Canada. I hope we can help each other aswell:-) Thanks Tricia

Re: Rowsell & Snow of Coley's Point, Bay Roberts, NL
No, Lloyd, they were not all from common progenator. The Bonavista /Port Blandford Rowsells are descended from Samuel Rowsell who was born in Poole in 1822 to James and Hannah Rowsell and came to Bonavista, Nfld. as a teacher with the Colonial and Continental School Society. He married in Bonavista to Marianna Mifflin in 1843 then to Ann Agnes Straithie in 1851. His parents James and Hannah (nee Batten) were married at Stoke St. Mary, Somerset, in 1820.

Greetings....Yes I am aware of the connection to Batten.....Do you know if the Batten mentioned, ancestor to Bonavista Rowsells, was related to the Batten's of Port de Grave? My email address is lgrowsell@yahoo.com. I have read many of your postings. Do you connect ot the Barretts of Coley's Point and Twillingate? I would like to share notes. Sincerely, Lloyd George Henry

Re: Rowsell and Snow of Coley's Point, Bay Roberts, NL
Do you happen to have any information on a Susanna Jane Russell/Rowsell, b. June 6th, 1853 in Coley's Point - parents unknown. Oral history has it that her future husband, Francis Samuel Minchinton, from the Channel Is., may have been shipwrecked and settled in Bay Roberts. The couple married in 1877 possibly in Labrador, and finally raised their family in Gaspe, Qc, where Susanna passed away in 1918. Any information at all on Susanna would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Rowsell and Snow of Coley's Point, Bay Roberts, NL
The name of Susanna Jane Russell/Rowsell b.abt. 1853 is not familiar at the moment. Although it seems that I have seen records for the names Susanna and Jane RUSSELL of the Cole Lee's Point and Bay Roberts area.
My great grandfather, Henry ROUSELL/ROWSELL had at least two sisters, that I have identified over the past few years. #1. Eliza, who married Charles FRENCH, son of Edward FRENCH. Eliza and Charles FRENCH adopted my grandfather when he was 2 yrs of age in the year 1890. #2. Sarah, who married John CURNEW/CURLEW . She died in 1906, within weeks of her brother, the above named Henry, who died 'at the ice' crew of the SS Newfoundland on March 28th, 1906. John CURNEW/CURLEW later married my widowed great grandmother. She was the daughter of Solomon MORGAN of Port de Grave.
A descendant of my grandfather's sister once told me that there may have been other siblings.
