Hi

I too am a Rowsell and founfd various spelling of the surname like, Rousal, Rousell, Rowsell, Rouswell. At a recent trip to the Taunton Record office in Somerset, England they explained how this variation could happen. In just one branch of my family the parents were Rowsell and all the children had a different spelling on their baptisms. I am not sure if this is correct but when you think about it it fits. When people who could not read or write either married or had their children baptised they just told the person who was registering them their surname. It was then down to that person to decide how it was spelt. If you cannot read or write then you cannot tell them how to spell your surname or check if you think they have spelt it write. Also looking through the records for my branch of the family who each had a different spelling, they were all entered by a different vicar each time so therefore each vicar had a different way of spelling the surname.

Surnames: Snow, Littlejohn
I am looking for a William Snow who married a Littlejohn female in Coley's Point, Newfoundland before 1914. Her name could possibly be Mary Jane Littlejohn born Sep. 1860. My Great-Grandmother's newspaper obituary in 1914 states she had a daughter Mr. Wm. Snow. I have check the census records for 1921, 1935 and 1945 Coley's Point but can not find him, there are lots of Snow names on the record but none appear to be this couple. My Great-Grandmother's obituary has only a few surviving children listed using their married names and husband's first name. I can account for all of them except for Mary Jane that is why I think it could be her.
Any help would be appreciated.
John
