I wanted to tie a bow around this inquiry. I have recently been given a copy of an old letter from my aunt in which she talked about the deaths of the siblings of my grandmother. She says they died of "black diptheria". So I guess there was an epidemic in 1868 in St Sylvester

hi John and others,
I have Cascaddens in Malahide and Elgin countys in Ontario. William Henry came to Pennsylvania and then Ontario in early 1800s. Check them out - they came from Ireland - Donegal as did the James in Quebec. Male names especially are consistent with the ones in Ireland and vice a versa.
Looking for History of the Parrott and Buggy families. of this area. Christopher and Ann Buggy Parrott w/married 1/1828 @ St Sylvestre, as was Mary Buggy on the same date. Christopher and Ann had at least five children in the area (John, Caroline, William, Henry, and Margaret. I believe a sister to Ann was married earlier in January 1828. These people all migrated to Fox Lake, WI by 1850. I can not find any of the boys after this time and I'm wondering if they returned to Canada? I believe Christopher was born in Maine to Enoch and Sophia (?) Parrott. The Buggy girls were born in Ireland. Mary was listed as a spinster. I don't know what qualifies as a "spinster"? We would very much appreciate some history on these families. Thank you.

I have checked all the church records that I could find for 1798 and after for St. Gervais but couldn't find when Angelique died.
My great-great grandmother and grandfather were William and Bridget McGee, that you listed below - i was trying to find William's parents, but I couldn't read the certificate on ancestry.com very well

- I believe Patrick and Ann McCauley were listed on an earlier census with William, but they were MUCH older than him - how do I find out if they were the grandparents or the parents?

Thanks!

Melinda Johnson

I am searching for the birth parents of my gggrandfather who I believe may have come from the Lotbiniere area. His name was Francis LaRoche and his obituary in 1900 stated he left behind two brothers and three sisters who live in Canada. I believe he was born sometime between 1833-1836. He eventually left Quebec and went to Minnesota and married a Philomene dit Lacroix Corbin about 1863. I hope to find someone who is missing a brother, named Francis or Joseph Francis Laroche...a descendant that I have found said that his father told him Francis was from somewhere near Montreal but he knew nothing else. I hope to connect with someone who is missing a Francis Laroche...can anyone help me out? I have been searching for 9 years now and am at a loss...thank you!!! Kathy

Hey guys, I have been reviewing the material from "St-Sylvestre se raconte" well as numerous online sources and have found little information on the Donahue's prior to John Donahue (1874-1950). For instance there is mention of 6 children from the Union of his father & mother : Francis Donahue & Hanna McCluskey yet only one name is given (Hugh Donahue) Anyone with additional info such as their county of origin in Ireland or the missing children's names would be greatly appreciated. In turn I still have a copy of the book, if only for a few additional weeks should you also be seeking info on your own familly line. I would be glad to help. Thanks !

Hello Kim, I am related to another branch of the same Nelligans. My great-great-grandfather was Maurice Nelligan. He was Father James Nelligan's brother. I believe Michael Nelligan (Bridget's father) is another brother. In a paper called "Fear and Loathing in Saint-Sylvestre: The Corrigan Murder Case, 1855-58" which was written for a university degree, it states that Bridget Nelligan was the niece of Father Nelligan. Father Nelligan also had a sister named Bridget. I would be very interested in sharing information. Cindy

The book is also in English. There is a likeness of the priest in the book but my cheep scanner comes up with a very poor picture.

From page 118 of the book:

"Father Nelligan was born September 12, 1804 at Dingle in Ireland: he studied for the priesthood at the seminary in Nicolet and was ordained September 26, 1830. He was first a curate in Quebec (1830-1836), than parish priest at St. Sylvestre from 1836-1851; he was also in charge of the mission of St. Ferdinand (1836-1843). Father Nelligan died June 24, 1868 at St. Joesph, Beauce, where he had been rector from 1856."

I know he came from Ireland but I am trying to discover where as I feel he may be related to another Nelligan relative of mine.
I would also like to know what the history has to say about any Kelly families ( origins - St.Nicholas /Ireland) Richard Kelly married Bridget Nelligan in St. Sylvestre in 1837.
Don't worry about the french as I can (eventually) translate it. Any information would be much appreciated. I know Father Nelligan moved to another parish around 1850 and died in 1868.
Thank you so much in advance.
Kim

Thanks for taking the time to look into this so far. I had not traced any info about Anne Forest because she is not part of my tree, so I didn't have that information on hand. I did post another reply to you correcting my misstatement about who was sibling to whom, and asking if affinity is by marriage and consanguinity is by blood? That is the point I'm actually unclear on.

The more I look at the Acadian censuses and registers, the more I realize everyone was related to everyone else!

What I meant to say was that Joseph's BROTHER had been married to Madeleine's late husband's sister... Jean LePrince was married to Judith Richard, sister of Joseph Richard. I thought affinity came by marriage and consanguinity came by blood. For consanguinity, she and Joseph LePrince share a great grandfather, Jean Gaudet.

I traced out the dispensations, and actually here's the situation:

Anne Forest's maternal grandparents: Claude Dugas and Françoise Bourgeois were the siblings of Madeleine LeBlanc's maternal grandparents: Germain Bourgeois and Madeleine Dugas. Thus the dispensation should have been DOUBLE 3rd degree of affinity, since it is compounded twice by a brother-sister (Claude & Madeleine) and a sister-brother (Françoise & Germain) relationship here. That it is to the third degree is correct, but should be DOUBLE 3rd degree.

Joseph (Le) Prince's paternal great-grandmother was Marie-Anne Gaudet (wife of Etienne Hébert), sister of Madeleine's paternal great-grandmother, Françoise Gaudet (wife of Daniel LeBlanc), so the couple in this marriage record were indeed 3rd cousins, which required a fourth degree of consanguinity dispensation (quick explanation: 4th degree = 3rd cousins; 3rd degree = 2nd cousins; 2nd degree = 1st cousins; NO 1st degree = siblings)

Hope this is clear enough for your research.

Dennis

Please recheck this statement of yours: "the affinity issue is because Madeleine's deceased husband had been the brother of Joseph's deceased wife".

Affinity is determined through the LIVING spouse's blood relationship to the DECEASED previous spouse. So how can a "LeBlanc" be a sibling to a "Forest"?

The relationship for this dispensation HAS to come from Madeleine's being a second cousin to Anne! For the record, one must follow the rules of Canon Law en force at that time in determining these things correctly.

Dennis

Thanks! The part that is most difficult to read is the part that I was most curious about - I thought it was essentially saying that she had had a child by Joseph already. I didn't see a baptismal record but I will go poke around in the register to see if I can see one. I knew there was a story in there but I was not positive I was reading it correctly. Her life had been very terrible for 5 or 6 years, she lost her husband and 4 of her 6 children in Quebec in Dec 1757 due to the smallpox, after having escaped there from Acadia. It would not surprise me at all that these bereft people got together.

I am pretty sure that the affinity issue is because Madeleine's deceased husband had been the brother of Joseph's deceased wife.

Thanks again.

First, let me say that this is a terrible copy of the record, and extremely difficult to decipher due to words lost in the overfolds of the page, but here goes...

The year seventeen hundred sixty one, the twenty-sixth of October, after the publication of one bann of marriages made during the announcements of the parish High Mass, between Joseph LePrince, widower of Anne Foret (sic for Forest) living in the parish of Bécancour on the one part; and Magdeleine LeBlanc, widow of Joseph (in the fold) Richard living in this parish on the other part; not having found any other impediment except that of affinity to third degree (i.e., Magdeleine was a second cousin to Anne Forest) and consanguinity to the fourth degree (i.e., she was also a third cousin to Joseph (Le) Prince), and [handwriting here is difficult to decipher, but essentially it is saying he also baptized a child of the said Magdeleine LeBlanc, called Joseph LeBlanc]; the parties also obtained dispensation from Messire (Most Rev.) Jean-Olivier Brilland (sic for Briand), canon of the Cathedral of Quebec and Vicar General of the diocese on the 16th dispensing also (on 2nd of May?) the publication of three banns in the parish of Bécancour; according to the said dispensation here attached; I, the undersigned Recollect (name of his Order) priest, performing the canonical duties of this parish, have received their mutual consent and have given them the nuptial blessing in the presence of their relatives and friends, Joseph Jean Hamel and Augustin Gautrau (or Gautron) witnesses, Joseph Jean Hamel has signed, the others have declared they don’t know how to write. This inquest following the ordinance of the law.

s/ Joseph Hamel

s/ F. Francois Carpentreu (sp?), Recollect Priest

Please don't ask me to translate the Latin dispensation document; this French one was difficult enough, and I've read and translated hundreds of these over the years.
Hello Jim Moran: Always glad to hear from someone about the Magees!! It was a long search for me, when I finally finally found James Magee's birth, I knew he was from Quebec but never where.

To make a long story shorter...my husband & I went up there and found so much history; I have two books on the Parish, Lotbiniere & St. Pats I think. And I could see where Patrick Magee came with others from Ireland and received land.
We could not find out where exactly as it was Sunday and everything was closed.

Whether we are of the same line or not I don't know, probably I think.

My line is like this...and I can send you my file PDF or Family Tree Maker;
Patrick Magee (Irish) m. Ann McCaulay and they had:
John (who married HONORE MULLAVY ...could be Nora Mullany??)
James, Michael, Bridget, William & Theresa.

My guy being JOHN, I had only time to do his line. He married (as above) Honore Mullavy, 30 Jan 1837.

They had James (my great- grandfather) and Ann and probably others.
James came to New Brunswick from Que. & married a Geldart. They had a female child Annie Rose, my grandmother. I always thought it was such a pretty name...Annie Rose Magee.

Anyway, that's it for now. If you have questions etc. my email is craigs.BR@gmail.com or calbarb@nb.Sympatico.ca.

Good hearing from you anyway.
Barb Craig

Hello There,

I am a descendant of Thomas MORAN. My family is from St. Patrice de Beaurivage, next door to St. Sylvestre.
In my records I found a Thomas MORAN of St. Sylvestre (b:22 October 1936) that was married to Anna McGee(b:15 Feb 1943). They supposedily have a child by the name of Gannon.
I also have records as follows:
John McGee married Nora Mullany - child William McGee
William married Jane MORAN in 1877 and had seven children.
- this branch, again according to my records lived in St. Pats.
Jane was the daughter of John MORAN and Hannah McCrea of St. Sylvestre who were married in 1834.

If this helps out - let me know.

Jim Moran

Ste Croix entry hard to read - any good eyes?

Hello - I have found an entry in the registers for Ste-Croix in 1761 that is relevant to my family history and appears to have quite a story attached to it - but I cannot make out everything it says! I do ok with the standard burial/marriage/baptism vocabulary but this is a marriage that required a dispensation for three reasons and I cannot make out all of the words. The scanned register in Drouin has most of the Latin dispensation page attached, plus a lengthy entry in French. If anyone is very good with reading this handwriting or has spent time parsing the Ste-Croix registers from this period, and would be willing to look at this image, I am attaching a .jpg to this post, or I can point you to the original location of the item in Drouin. Thanks in advance for any help with this!
