Looking for Toland or Hopkins from St Sylvester Lobtiniere Quebec

These families came from Ireland and ended up in New Hampshire. Any information about either would be appreciated. Also the Hopkins family lost 5 children all in 1868. Curious: was there an epidemic of some sort. Any suggestions for genealogical research for these families?

Hi - unfortunately I do not have any of the information you are looking for, but I was struck by the fact that 5 children of the Hopkins family died in 1868. Because a couple that I am distantly related to, Henry and Mary-Anne Platte of St. Sylvestre, lost 6 of their 7 children also in 1868 (all buried on the 9th of August). I had always assumed that they probably had perished in a house fire, but maybe there was an epidemic of some sort that year. Richard

Richard: I am not sure whether I ever acknowledged your response to my inquiry. I am interested in your info - there must have been an epidemic or some sort of a disaster for so many kids to have died in the same families in the same month. I am going to try to find a way to explore it further. I found a couple of books that are supposed to have histories of the area. I will let you know if I find out anything. If you give me your email address, we might be able to share other possible similarities. Maybe our kin were neighbors.

Hi - Thanks for the reply, and yes it would be good to maybe work together on this. My email is rcc3@globetrotter.net. I grew up in St. Sylvestre, and own a copy of the 150 anniversary book that was published in 1978. And there is no mention of an epidemic; but as you suggested there must have been something. I've tried looking online for Quebec City or other local newspapers from that year, but I've haven't found anything online. May have to visit the archives and check out the newspapers in person. Stay in touch. Thanks.
Richard.

Richard: I have requested a copy of the church records for St Sylvester Parish of Marriages, Deaths, etc. that the LDS church has. I thought I would search through1868 and see if there is any aditional informatioin there or more families with the same situation. Will keep you informed. vam

I am workiing on my genealogy once again. I still have not been able to find anything new on this mystery. But I have a couple of questions to ask you.

1. Where exactly is St Sylvestre? I have tried to pin point it and it seems that it is actually just outside of the city of Quebec. Is that true?

2. Have you ever read the book: Leeds and St Sylvester: historical sketches by Cruickshank? I tried to find it in the Library of Congress but it was mifiled when I was there and I have not be back to Washington DC since then.

Thanks

Hi - Yes, St. Sylvester (or Saint-Sylvestre) is located about 40 miles due south of Quebec City, in County Lotbiniere (next to County Megantic). Leeds (or Saint-Jacques-de-Leeds) is the neighbouring village. I've heard of that book by Cruickshank, but no I have not read it. I haven't done much genealogy in the last couple of years. But I would still like to research and see what happened in 1868. Did we ever compare dates from that year? Thanks.
Richard.

I am trying to tie the parents (Francis Hopkins & Margaret Toland) of the children that died in 1868 to my family. I know Francis' parents were John Hopkins and Margaret McLaughlin. I suspect John Hopkins may have been the brother of my 4th great grandfather, William Hopkins. William was married to Ellen/Helen Lappin. Does any of this sound like a match? I also know that Francis had a cousin Patrick, which could tie to my tree.

Thanks, Susanna

Susanna:

We apparently are cousins of some sort. My Hopkins tree does tie into your William Hopkins.

This sure has been a good day. I just saw your posting about the St Sylvester disaster in 1868. I posted a similar query about 3-4 years ago. Annie Jane Hopkins is my grandmother. Her father was Francis Hopkins the son of John Hopkins. Francis and his wife Margaret lost 5 children in a few months time in 1868. I have wondered about an epidemic of some sort. Do you know what it was? My grandmother was born in NH after the family immigrated there in 1869. My mother was born and grew up in Groveton NH. The family lived in Stark NH which is just a few miles away from NH.

I found this query when Ancestry.com made me aware of your family tree by giving me the link from my William to your William. What thrills me is that I have been searching and searching for some way to find out where in Ireland the family came from. You apparently have that information. I looked at your source and you mentioned a letter from someone written in 1972. Could you share all of the Hopkins info in that letter with me?

I do not know whether you need an "invite" to be able to get into my tree or not. You can try to get in. It is Virginia's tree. If you look up Annie Jane Hopkins in the Public member trees you will find it. If you cannot get in without an invite I will send one. Can I do it withour your email address? My direct email address is v.myers5506@att.net.

Through my genealogy activities, I have reconnected with some other of Annie Jane's descendants. They, too, will be thrilled to find out about your Ireland information.

Just within the last few days I have also found another Hopkins connection. She - at least I think it is a she = posted some comments about some of my other Hopkins cousins. Her Ancestry.com name is mcdube. Do you know of this person?

Anxiously awaiting your reply.

Hello Richard, Do you know the Houley family in Ste. Sylvestre? My husband is a distant cousin to them but his part of the family lived there also until the late 1920's.
We have been trying to find their connection "across the pond" but so far no luck. There were 6 Houley families that came together about 1828.
I checked our records and there were no deaths in 1868 but 3 children died close to each other in 1864.
Any connections or info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Helen and Bill Howley
