Thank you for trying to help. I have the names of 12 children for this couple - I found the baptism of 9 children - Jean-Baptiste was one of the children that was missing. Thank you for this info about is birth. I have one question, because the French and the English speaking people mark the day and month differently, could you please tell me if this is 9 of June or 6 of Sept. 1826.
The other 2 children missing are Apolline and Christophe. My Prudent Pelletier is the one who married Olivette Boucher. Apolline married Pierre Montagnais in St-Roch-des-Aulnaies, L'Islet, PQ. Christophe married Archange Corneau also in St-Roch. I have no marriage for J.-B. Pelletier.

Neither parents married twice. I have the records of their burials. They died less than 4 months apart - Augustin Pelletier died first and the priest wrote "epoux de Angelique Gaumond" - "spouse of Angelique Gaumond" And in Angelique Gaumond's record, the priest wrote "epouse de feu Augustin Pelletier" - "spouse of the late Augustin Pelletier."

Never mind! I would not pay that amount myself. I have a very good genealogical library, right here in Woonsocket - 5 minutes drive from my house. I thank you very much - but I surely do not expect anyone to spend that much - no wonder so many people turn to the Mormon papers instead.

Thank you just the same - I appreciate it.

Kathleen

I found 9 siblings born between 1814 and 1838. From what I have - there were 12 children - I have 3 missing. They were all born in St-Roch-des-Aulnaies, L'Islet Co., PQ where their parents married on Nov. 8, 1813. Both parents died in Ste-Louise L'Islet Co., PQ.

I found the burial of Elisabeth in St-Roch, May 25, 1885 and it says that she was 68 years old, so depending on the month she was born - she was born in 1816 or 1817.

Both of my McKenna grandparents were the grandchildren of brother Prudent Pelletier (b. Mar 15, 1822) and sister Elisabeth Pelletier (b. about 1816 - 1817). For this reason my grandparents needed a dispensation to marry.

Thank you for caring enough to help. I'm grateful.

I see that Elizabeth's mother is identified as Angelique Gagnon on Elizabeth's marriage certificate. So this suggests that you might have to do some detective work. Did her father remarry or was he previously married? Is there an Angelique Gagnon anywhere in the family? Happy hunting.

No problem prior to 1800 but no such register since.

Even if you knew the name of the parish in Montreal where the child was baptized, digitized records of the parishes are available till 1942 only.

You might want to post your query on the Montreal forum of Genforum. Thereafter, it costs about 8 cents per queries.
Is there a genealogy Society for the L'Islet area? I have dozens of relatives (over 5 generations) that settled here from France and then emigrated to Maine. The family name is "THEBERGE". Many of them got married at Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours church. I found a beautiful picture of the church online, but was hoping that I could find some direct record sources online as well. Any ideas?

Adelard-Napoleon Duval, b 1877 L'Islet?

I am looking for any information I can find on this man, he ended up at one time in Cippewa Wisconsin. Hew shows in his WWI reg, card as a farmer. He married a Susan Alice Nichols. This is unfortunately all the info I can find in the US....I do show an Adelor Duval in the 1881 Canada Census in Quebec, with a family where the husband has died and the head of the family is an Eleanore. There are 7 children and Adelor is the youngest. It states it is the Ashford & St.-Louise L'lslet, Quebec area. ANY help would be great!

I have no idea if what I am searching for could be related, but my great grandfather was Louis Augustus LaMar - born in Montreal in 1872. He later married Alice Aileen Postil in Buffalo, NY and was living in Chicago in the 1930's before settling in Medina County Ohio later in life. Does this match to any of your records. My family has no information on this branch and we would love to find out more!

Hi Linde:

I grew up near L'Islet. I have a copy of a copy written on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of L'Islet (1677 to 1977), written by Leon Belanger, priest.

Unfortunately, the book does not allude stories like yours.

I am not aware as to whether or not there is a History Society in L'Islet.

Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will see your query and will respond to it.

Grosse-Île was the quarantine site for arriving immigrants. It is facing Montmagny, about two towns west of L'Islet. I did visit the island a few years ago. However, I do not remember as to whether or not such incidents were dealt with.

Try Grosse-ile on internet and that will generate something but mainly as a quarantine site.

Bonne chance,

Jean-Marie (John)

I'm not related to David Herbison, from co. Antrim, northern Ireland, but I''ve researched a short biography of him for the forthcoming Dictionary of Irish Biography. He was rescued from the wreck of the emigrant ship Rob Roy in April 1827 by "two pretty Canadian girls", daughters of a farmer who had a "beautiful farm on the banks of the river". The girls waded into the river chest-deep to grab a small boat in which Herbison was trying to get to shore. He never found out their names, but I wonder if anyone's family tradition preserves the story in L'Islet? It would be nice to give the girls credit in my article for saving him. He returned to Ireland and became a poet.

bonjour Omer or Oscar,

Jean-Marie

Re: Laurent Chouinard and Claire Gagnon

Laurent Chouinard and Marie Claire Gagnon were married in a "civil ceremony" on 19 Jan 1774 and were not considered married in the eyes of the church. The birth record of Rose Chouinard, b. July 06, 1774 and died August 20, 1774, at St. Jean Port Joli, notes that she was "enfant illegitime". This couple are also shown as the parents of Marie Julie Chouinard (on her marriage record at Kamouraska), but there is no birth record for her. PRDH says this about it:

LAURENT CHOUINARD ET MARIE-CLAIRE GAGNON ONT EU DES ENFANTS ENSEMBLE MAIS NE FURENT JAMAIS MARIES AUX YEUX DE L'EGLISE. LEUR "UNION" FUT SOLEMNISEE PAR UN LAIQUE LE 19 JANVIER 1774, CE QUI ENTRAINA LEUR EXCOMMUNICATION. POUR PLUS DE DETAILS, VOIR "LES CHOUINARD, HISTOIRE ET GENEALOGIE", ASSOCIATION DES CHOUINARD D'AMERIQUE DU NORD, 1993, PP. 362-363

If Laurent Chouinard later married, it was after 1799 or outside the Catholic church. Marie Claire was previously married on July 14, 1760 to Romain Joseph Francois Dupolo dit Duval who died on May 04, 1773. With him she had 5 children, Joseph Marie (July 19, 1764), Henri Marie (Jun 24, 1767), Andre (bap. Jan 8 1771) Marie Claire (no bap. record), and Marie Theotiste (bap. Sep 13 1772).

If you have other information, please post it here.

My sources were given in my previous message: PRDH (U. of Montreal) and the marriage records for Kamouraska. PRDH can be used online, or in the form of books or CDs. The online version is consistently updated if new records are discovered.

Regards,
Sharyn

Leopolde LECLERC (Germain & Luce MERCIER 30-07-1822 S. J. P.
