"John Swete Cummins born November 8, 1812 at Upper Dunkettle, Co Cork, Ireland, died in Levis Oct 31, buried in the graveyard of the Church of the Holy Trinity (Rue 31 Wolfe), Levis,Nov 1, 1862" The service was conducted by his long time friend, Rev. William Agar Adamson (Register of the Anglican Church serving Aubigny, 1862, p24, QNA #M-138.11).
I don't trust the birth year, 1812 but the rest is sound.
The church is now closed and converted to a theatre, I haven't a clue whether the graves were relocated, paved over or? One can put the address Rue 31 Wolfe, Levis, Quebec in Google maps.
"Died on the 31st of October, at his residence, Point Levi, John Swete Cummins, Esquire aged fifty years, funeral at half past 3 o'clock." [Quebec] Morning Chronicle, Nov 1, 1862, p2, col 6 reprinted in the Quebec Gazette, Nov 3, 1862, p3, col 1.
Cork Examiner, Nov 15, 1862: "Died on the 31st ult., at Point Levi, Quebec, John Swete Cummins, second son
of the late Nicholas Marshal Cummins, of Woodville, Co. of Cork, Esq."
Curiously, the Will of John Swete Cummins records his estimation of his net worth of exceeding $82,000: Amherst Island property (not valued), unsettled plough land Lisheenleigh (sic, illegible)in the west of Co Cork valued at $7,000, an interest in Rathpeacon near the City of Cork, $4,000,and the estate of Gaunmes (sic, illegible) $71,000. The valuable estate that JSC appears to be referring to could be Woodville, Glanmire, perhaps inherited directly from his father who died in 1838.
Reverend William Agar Adamson (1800-1868) was the second rector of St James Anglican Church, Amherst Island 1841-44 during JSC's residency). He was also the Chaplain & Librarian to the Legislative Council of the Province of Canada appointed 1841 until shortly before his death (he departed the Island in 1844 when the seat of Government moved to Montreal).
JSC's first born son was named after Adamson: "John Henry (Agar) Adamson, son of John Swete Cummins, and of Catherine Smith his wife, was born on the eleventh day of March, 1850
and was privately Baptized on the 25th following by me, W Agar Adamson, Assistant Minister" (Ancestry.com, Quebec Vital statistics, Drouin Collection, Montreal, Anglican Christ Church Cathedral (Actes) 1850, folio 6). Adamson did not note the residency of Cummins, I'm comfortable presuming this implied JSC was local, a resident of Montreal.
