Actually, our Hugh Sr. is also the son of a Hugh Hurley (the first of three Hugh's in our line) and Jane Jackson. Hugh (I) had two sons: Hugh (II) and George. I am not aware of any Patrick in our line. Our Hugh Hurleys (all three of them) can all be found living next door to each other in St-Edouard, Dorchester West, Quebec at the time of the 1871 Canada Census. Hugh I is 87 years old at the time. George is found not far away in the same record. (George also had a son named Hugh, so that makes four (4) Hughs altogether!) By the time of the 1881 Canada Census, Hugh II and Hugh III are still living in St-Edouard. I'm told a lot of our Hurleys are buried at the Springbrook Protestant Church in Frampton, nearby.

According to information sent to me years ago by another Hurley descendant, Hugh I married Jane Jackson from County Down, Ireland. They did not know if they married there or in Canada, but they came to Canada around 1828. Hugh I was supposedly under the command of Lord Nelson in the battle of Trafalgar and received a land grant in Quebec in lieu of service rendered. Hugh II married Sarah Ann Sargeant. Hugh III married Mabelle Clare Medlar of McHenry County, Illinois.

Hi
Saw your posting from 2004 about Hugh Hurley. You probably found this information out by now but incase not:
Your Hugh Senior Hurley was a brother to my Patrick Hurley born about 1808 in Limerick, Ire. He immigrated to Restigouche, New Brunswick in 1836. His parents were Patrick and Catherine Callaghan.

Elizabeth

He was born 28-09-1876 and baptized the first of octobre 1876. It is indicated that he was the first child to be baptized at this church (St-Albert-de-Warwick).
I also found the death record of the same Philippe. He died 2-05-1892, St-Albert-de-Warwick. So, he cannot be the Philippe married to Cecilia Robert.

Do you know where the couple got married? If you have the marriage record, you should have the names of his parents.

Good luck!
Claire
Bonjour,

I've started my lady's family tree and we've come to a dead end.

Her great grand-father was Philippe Provencher (1876-1959) married to Cecilia Robert on May 7 1911. There's a saying in the family that he got adopted by the "Ducharme" family in St-Albert-de-Warwick, Quebec. Philippe was the first to be baptised in the St-Albert church but under the name Ducharme.

In the "Provencher" dictionary, Philippe his mentioned as the last child but is 16 years older then the first child of Luc Ducharme, which leads us to believe he was adopted, but from whom ?

I have attached the dictionary's reference to help you understand.

Merci d'y jeter un coup d'oeil.

Bonne journée

I am helping my friend find her biological mother. The mother is from this region, the 4th of 5 children, born around 1929. She was a teacher who moved to Montreal, and was supporting her parents with her earnings. She died of a heart attack around 1984. She may have married later and had other children. One of her brothers was only one month old when he died. She had two other sisters between 20-30 years of age at the time she gave birth. The grandparents knew nothing of her pregnancy. The biological father was also from this region, 25 years old, owner of a general store. He offered to marry her but she refused. He was taking care of his mother. The parents had known each other many years. The grandparents had a huge age difference. At the time of birth, the grandfather was 70, and the grandmother was 57. Does anyone have a clue as to this adopted woman's family? Please help.

Scroll down to Frampton Township and click on the cemetery you want. These cemeteries were photographed by my granddaughter and I in last summer. Cindy

This couple's marriage record is part of the Drouin Collection on www.ancestry.com.
My French is very poor. I believe they were married on August 30, 1864 at L'Isle Verte (St-Jean-Baptiste) in Riviere-de-Loup County.
David Beaulieu's parents were Jean Baptiste Beaulieu and Genevieve Paradis.
Angele Soucy's parents were Thomas Soucy and
Appoline Grand Maison.

Note: Thomas and Appoline's marriage record is also posted.
They were married February 16, 1841 in Cacouna. Thomas' parents were Jean Baptist Soucy and Genevieve Belanger.
Appoline Grand Maison's parents were, I think, Alvin Grand Maison and Modiste Mapuis.

I did not look up any other records. If you do not have access to ancestry.com's world or Canadian collections than I suggest you check you local library to see if they have a free access to ancestry.com You will want to look at these orginial documents and you may be able to take the direct line back even further.

Good luck,

Margaret Murtagh Barylski

Charles Witty married Maria Johns(t)on 25 March 1820 in Bishop Burton, Yorkshire, England. Maria had one child before they were married. This child went by the surname Johnson sometimes and Witty other times. Charles and Maria had five children in England and then two more in Quebec.

This makes 8 children total that Maria had, the illegitimate one and seven by Charles.

Hope this helps.

It was exciting to find your website and to let you know that I have visited Springbrook a number of times and also the original homesteads of both families. A beautiful place

I noticed the W's but did not really think anything of it. I assume this means Joseph married twice. I wonder if there were children from the first marriage.

Yes I have a marriage for Joseph to Elizabeth. This is line that I am pursuing. I am told they had 5 children: Josiah (died in a powder mill explosion in Windsor), Henry (buried in Windsor with wife), Peter (buried in Windsor), Girl, and George Alford Witty, b 17 Nov 1860.

George Alford is my gggrandfather. I have him marrying Sarah Jane Finlay in 1886, but would love to know where, and where Sarah was from. Do you have any information about this line?

Yes, that is your Joseph, living with his father Charles and his younger brother and sister, John and Catherine. You will note on the census that there is a W beside Charles' and Joseph's ages. This means that they were both widowers. Since Joseph was only 30 on this census, I suspect that his first marriage was in Canada, but I have not located one for him. He could have emigrated after the rest of the family though.

On my previous post, I forgot that I had proof that John was born in Canada, so this would put the emigration from England prior to 19 Dec 1831.

I am assuming that you have the marriage of Joseph Witty and Elizabeth Dustin on 28 Apr 1853 in the Wesleyan Methodist church in Melbourne, Quebec.

I found an 1851 Canada census record that lists Charles Witty, approx 60 years old/Farmer/born England, Joseph Witty approxmiately 30 years old/Farmer/born England, John Witty, approx 20 years old/Farmer/born Canada, and Catharine Witty/approx 17 years old/born Canada.

It lists them living in Canada East (Quebec), Sherbrooke County, Melbourne. I wonder if these are the same people? Do you have any insight into this?

My mistake, I have him being christened 25 sep 1820 same location.
There is an IGI record that has Charles Witty being christened 04 AUG 1797 at Saint Mary And Saint Nicholas, Beverley, Yorkshire, England. (Bishops Transcripts). In this record his mother is listed as Catherine Witty. I have not seen the other records that you refer to. I have also heard that Charles was an illegitmate child.?

I also have an IGI record for Catherine Witty (Christening, 21 April 1777, Saint John and Saint Martin, Beverley, Yorkshire, England. Source: International Genealogical Index Batch No. C106622, Dates 1713-1812, Source Call No. 0919386, Film, Print Out Call NumberL 6910853, Title: Bishop's Transcripts, 1600-1864, Authors: Church of England, St. Johns Church (Beverley, Yorkshire). In this record, her father is listed as George. Can't really confirm that these are the right ones, but the dates work.
Cheers,
I have Joseph Witty christened 25 Sep 1820 in Saint John And Saint Martin, Beverley, Yorkshire. Was he christened in 1824 as well?
The closest estimate for the family's emigration would be between 14 Jun 1829 and 6 Mar 1834. They probably came directly to Canada, with the Montreal port being the most likely.
Do you have positive proof that Catherine was Charles' mother? I found a possible christening for Charles on 4 Aug 1797 in Beverly, Yorks. It was an illegitimate birth to Catherine. Other records suggest that Charles was born about 1792, so I am not sure that this is him.

Charles Witty married Maria Johns(t)on 25 March 1820 in Bishop Burton, Yorkshire, England. Maria had one child before they were married. This child went by the surname Johnson sometimes and Witty other times. Charles and Maria had five children in England and then two more in Quebec.

Your David Witty was christened 27 Oct 1826 in Cherry Burton, Yorkshire. I believe he converted to Catholicism when he married Josephte. I recently obtained christening records of David and Josephte's children, if you are interested.

I am researching David's older sister Sarah Witty, who married a John Witty. Do you have any information on this other Witty family, who were also from England?

I have gone to Stafford Springs Connecticut and found the death records for both John and Esther. John parents are not listed and I do believe that he is NOT related to Louis Lataille and Judith St. Martin, he has no birth record and he is not in the canadIian census, also I cannot find a marriage for a Rose Bertrand and Joseph Desautel. On Esther's death certificate it states that he mother was a Rose Bertrand but her father was a Joseph Disholt. I have pictures of my g-Grandfather John Henry Dio, who was their son, and Aldolphus, and Henry. They all have very high cheek bones.

Chris, Saint-Édouard-de-Frampton (its full name) was a parish-town in the former county of Dorchester in QC. Go to the following GENWEB site and you should find more info re: old counties, which are now incorporated into larger regions:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~canqc/regional.htm

On the following site depicting a map of QC with counties indicated, at the top of the page, click on 46-60 and you'l notice that DORCHESTER is # 59, which will allow you to locate it within QC:
http://www.tlfq.ulaval.ca/lexique/spfc/carte_comtes.asp

Where is Ste-Edouard, Dorchester, Quebec?

After more than a few years, I have just discovered my Hugh Henry Hurley (b. 1858) in Ste-Edouard, Dorchester, Quebec. We knew he was "from Canada", but family legend told us it was Manitoba. He may have migrated to Manitoba, but ended up buried in Columbus, Ohio, USA. His daughter's name, our grandmother Mabelle, sounded more French, so on a whim, I plugged his name into an online index for the 1881 census in Quebec, and voila, there he was with his father's family!! A whole new generation to add to the tree. I believe Hugh Henry's parents, Hugh and Sarah Sargent, probably stayed and died in Ste-Edouard, Dorchester, Quebec.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with researching in Canada, and wonder if anyone knows the area and if this town exists today, where it is exactly so I can try to locate it on a map? (I'm hoping to locate a cemetery, historical society, etc.)
Thank you for any help you can give.
Chris

A little late in getting to you, Libby. Kingville refers to a section of Thetford-Mines & is in Mégantic County. Maybe posting on that county board would help. Sorry I don't have the church registries for this area. Good luck!
