Hi Jean-Marie,
This message thread is very interesting and exciting for me. I must have several Gonthier ancestors buried at St-Gervais, since my family appears in the parish records from about 1780 until 1848. In 1848 my ancestors moved to St-Jean-sur-Richelieu and became Gauthiers. My Gonthier ancestors likely buried in St-Gervais are:

Joseph Marie BERNARD dit GONTHIER, died unknown.
- married Marguerite LARRIVÉE on 2 Mar 1772 in Saint-Michel Ladurantaye.

Marguerite LARRIVÉE, died 31 May 1818 St-Gervais.

Joseph GONTHIER dit BERNARD, died 22 Jan 1848 St-Gervais.
- married Marie FRADET on 21 Aug 1797 in Saint-Charles, Bellechasse.

Marie FRADET, died 6 May 1847 St-Gervais.

There are also children of these families buried at St-Gervais.

If you are willing during your visit to the St-Gervais cemetery next summer, would you notice any Gonthier or Bernard graves as you walk through, and would you take a picture for me? If it is helpful I will write to the cemetery manager asking for grave locations.

Thanks, and regards,

Robert Gauthier

Next trip is next summer. Hopefully, one can obtain some info from the manager because this is a relatively large cemetery. Will make an attempt next summer.
Here is a record of the marriage between Adelard Marion and Pamelia Moore on ancestry.com
Name: Parmelia Moore
Birth Place: Ottawa, Ontario
Age: 18
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1881
Father Name: Laurent Moore
Mother Name: Celanie Gagnon
Spouse Name: Adelard Marion
Spouse's Age: 18
Spouse Birth Year: abt 1881
Spouse Birth Place: Russell, Ontario
Spouse Father Name: Seraphin Marion
Spouse Mother Name: Olinda Landry
Marriage Date: 4 Jul 1899
Marriage County or District: Russell

What I am trying to solve is Where was Laurent Moore born? Who were his parents? What happened to his two younger sisters when he was orphaned in Quebec at the age of 10 in about 1847 and adopted (or cared for) by Marguerite Guenette.

I will see if I can contact the families of the Pamelia's sisters and see if those families have more information.

Mais encore une fois Merci pour votre aide

Marc
Hello:

It may be difficult to locate some Guenette or Blais who would know about this person.

He went by Laurent but for the marriag of one of his two daughters, he was known as Laurent Justinien Moore.
His daughters were married in 1886 (Beauce) and 1889 in Matapedia region.

No record of any male descendant who got married.

I would think that Celanire remarried but so far I have not found a marriage record for her. There are several Celanire Gagnon.

For that period, in Quebec, we do not have a province-wide death registry, unfortunately.

Given that Laurent got killed, there would not be a trial associated with this event.

Are you a descendant of Laurent? I have not family relationship to those families.

Jean-Marie
Gatineau, Quebec, Canada

I am researching a man called Laurent Moore. He was adopted
by Marguerite Guenette and Joseph Blais around 1848. He married Celanire Gagnon . Laurent was a baker as well as Marguerite (at least I believe so). He sometimes signed his name Laurent Maure. This mans real name was Laurence Moore according to my mother (his great grandchild).
He was Scottish according to my mother and likely came on an Irish coffin ship as both parents died on the trip over. Unfortunately Laurent Moore (Laurent Maure) (Laurence Moore)
died young from injury he received during a robbery.Note: I am aware of the French wedding announcement between Laurent and Celanire . This document is not correct.Anyway I thought if I turned my attention to the family of Marguerite Guenette they may have more information about this young man.

Aldo:

The ancestry of Louis appears available on BMS2000 database.
I suggest that you you that tool for this research and others that you might have.. More info below.

Louis' parents were Charles Moreau and Marie Routhier.

BMS2000 basic instructions.

BMS2000 is a database of baptisms, marriages and deaths («S« stands for «sepulture» or «burials») records for the province of Quebec, a little from Ontario. The data were taken from parish or counties repertories. English and French versions of instructions are available. More marriages than B and D because B- and D repertories were produced for no more than 10 % of the Quebec parishes and few or none from the Montreal area. Given that the data are taken from repertories, one has to be aware that if the repertory was produced in 1980 and for which there has not been any update, the marriages for the post-1980 period are not available in BMS2000. To make up for it, we in Quebec use the marriage and death database of the Quebec Statistics Bureau or Statistics covering the period of 1926 to 1996. Now avail. on line. Register if you want to make research in Quebec. 25 free queries. Thereafter, you may deposit some funds. about 10 cents per query. No charge if you do not get the full details of the record. I suggest that you search with surnames of the couple only (no given names). If the surname of a partner has numerous variations, use the surname of the other partner and one or two given names (bride and groom). Rather easy to use. To search for a marriage: select: SPOUSES (in the upper right corner section) and type in only the surnames of the partners. Click on the applicable line to see marriage data. If you want the name of the married male children of a couple, from the parents’ marriage data, click on CLOSE (bottom right of the screen), select: GROOM's parents. A line with names will appear for each son. Click on each line one at a time to get details . To get the names of the married female children of a couple, go back to the line with the parents’ names (step 1), select: Bride's parents (because when the daughters of a couple get married, they are brides) .Again, click on every line to reveal the name of the daughters and their marriage data. This may sound complicated but it is not after a few attempts. Contact me if you need more info. I have no financial interest in BMS2000.

Jean-Marie

bonjour,

Talbot's works are out of print. The right have been acquired by a Gen. Association in RI I believe. IT is made of several volumes but generally bound in 5 vol. There is a set for the counties of Bellechasse-Montmagny-L'Islet.

Another one for the counties of Dorchester-Beauce and Frontenac.

Using BMS2000, I cannot find a marriage record for Regis Roy. However, I do find marriage records for three sons of Joseph and Catherine.

I have access to Talbot's works at my Gen. Society and I will have a look to find out if Regis got married.

Joseph son of Etienne Roy and Marie-Louise Guillemette, married Catherine Fradet-Fradette-Fredette (d/o Clemet Fradet and Catherine Morin, on 26 Oct 1830 at St-Gervais.

Jean-Marie
Gatineau, QC

Hello:
Amrie-Angelique was married on 21 Aug 1751 in St-Pierre-du-Sud (near Montmagny). I have reviewed the repertory of deaths for this town and she did not die nor was buried there.

I will check the death repertory of St-Gervais.

Jean-Marie

Looking for the death/burial and church for my 4 gr grandmother Marie Angelique Richard (daughter of Joseph Jacques Richard and Marie-Rosalie Fournier.
Angelique was still living when her husband Jean-Chrysostome Dessaint dit St.Pierre died March 27, 1798 and was buried in St. Gervais et Protais, Bellechasse, PQ.
I have searched for her death/burial record at this church and couldn't find when she died. She was 65 yrs old when her husband died so she may have gotten remarried but not likely. Anyways, she would have still kept her maiden name (so glad the French records keep the maiden names).
Any help would be mostly appreciated.
Lisa

Bonjour Nora:

You do not seem to have received a reply to your query. A few notes that may be useful still.

Marie-Louise Morin wife of Guillaume Rousseau went by the given names of Louise or Luce or Marie in the marriage records of her children.

Guillaume was mentioned as Gaudiose in the marr. record of his Daughter Marie-anne to Cadrin.

I have in Quebec, found marr. records for only two sons of Guillaume and Marie-Lse:

Narcisse to Léocadie St-Ours, 4 Feb 1856 at St-Maurice and

F.X to Reine Mercier, 28 Aug 1838, St-Vallier

Death dates: are difficult to obtain ; no central registry for that period.

For marriage records, I suggest the BMS2000 database for your research. Here is a short guide.

Unless a birth and death repertory have been prepared from the parishes registries, it is difficult to obtain the info.

The other option is with Ancestry.Com and you have to access Drouin's database for the Quebec parishes. I will try to find a more complete link name and will send it to you. What you do in fact is that you access the applicable church registry.

Jean-Marie (John)

Rousseau's of Bellechasse, Quebec, Canada
I have created a 70+ page file for descendents of Guillaume Rousseau born November 21, 1777, died Dec. 10, 1862 and his wife Marie Louise Morin born 1789. They were married Feb. 4, 1812 at Montmagny, Quebec, but all of their children were born at St. Vallier, Bellechasse. Some of these families lived at Armagh, Bellechasse.

I have names of 13 children for them including FIVE distinct daughters all with given name MARIE. Some people have posted online that one or more of these daughters was married multiple times but that information is wrong.

For example, their daughters:

Marie Anne Rousseau born about 1812 married Etienne Cadrin and had at least 13 children. She died in March 1894.

Marie Rousseau born abt. Dec. 14 1821 died and was buried Dec. 26, 1821. She was 12 days old when she died.

Marie Leocadie Rousseau was born about 1823 and died August 1906; was married to Thomas Theberge, at least 13 children.

Marie Rousseau born March 1824, died July 1873 was married to Francois Xavier Morin and had at least 7 children.

Another Marie Rousseau was born in same family August 7, 1826, unless this is Marie Leocadie wife of Thomas Theberge? (If so, then there were only four daughters named Marie.)

Another of Guillaume Rousseau and Marie Louise Morin's children was Francois Xavier Rousseau born 1815, married to Marie Reine Mercier. I cannot find a date of death for this Francois, but his wife Reine re-married on October 18, 1859 to Pierre BOUTIN, a man who was only four years older than her eldest Rousseau son. I have not yet found a date of death for Reine either. She and Pierre were at Armagh, Bellechasse in year 1901 for the census.

Does anyone have a date of death and place of death for Francois X. Rousseau, Marie Reine Mercier or Pierre Boutin?

Does anyone know if Reine Mercier and Pierre had children together?

I have names of TWELVE children for Marie Reine Mercier and Francois Xavier Rousseau, including two sons who died in Minnesota- Francois Xavier Rousseau 1839-1914, and Michel Elzear Rousseau 1847-1920.

At least two of the children went to Vermont and may have died at Bennington- I do not have dates of death for them yet: Sophie Rousseau born Jan. 1846 married to Francois Claude (Frank) Pellerin; they had at least 11 children, most of them born in Vermont, and Guillaume Napoleon Rousseau born November 1844 whom I believe is the direct ancestor of one of my sons in law.

Guillaume went by the name Napoleon or Paul, and in one census was recorded with the surname BROOKS. His wife was Lena Laclair, daughter of Stephen and Mary Laclair. I have names of eight children for Paul and Lena, most of them born in Vermont. Paul and Lena were still alive in 1920 at Bennington.

If anyone else researching these specific families or if anyone has additional information, or questions, please post here or contact me directly.

Thanks from Nora

Hi John:

The info provided by another person from Drouin's marriage dictionary appears correct although difficult to decipher or chart given the up and down approach all the time. I prefer to go in the upward position starting with the most current generation.

BMS2000 shows the marriage date of Barthelemy as 18 Jun 1838 vs 1831. I would have to validate this with the actual records at St-Vallier.

I had the same children for Barth and Adelaide.

With regard to ancestry past the generation of Joseph and Marie-Anne Coulombe, I will have to check a source of data at my Gen. Society. Jetté's work has good info about the early generations in New France. Also, Talbot Work contains ready-made genealogies of the families of the Counties of Bellechasse-Montmagny-L'Islet; that means that all the generations for your ancestry are probably there. I could check this out for you. Neither of those two works are avail. on the web to my knowledge.

Have you considered using BMS2000 (avail. in English and French) on the web. About 8 cents per positive query. Easy to use.
For couples, search can be made with surnames only.

Can also search for children of a couple:
In right upper corner, in ROLE IN THE ACT, click onGROOM'S PARENTS FOR THE SONS OF THIS COUPLE AND ON BRIDE'S PARENTS FOR THE DAUGHTERS OF THIS COUPLE. This is a time-saving approach.

One of my ancestor was married in St-Vallier about 1765. It is a beautiful area that I visit every year.

More to come soon.

Jean-Marie

I looked at the church records for St. Valliers and I think your dates may be a little off. I have baptism records for Marie, born 1841 and Philomene born 1848. They are children of Barthelemy and Adelaide.
I did not check all the years but just a few.
Can you confirm your dates?
Would you like copies of what I have so far?
I am not connected--just helping a fellow BC'er.
Dave

Hello, Bonjour:

I am researching my family line. My great great grandfather was Cleophas Lacombe b: 1848, St. Vallier. His father was Barthelemy who married Adelaide Laverdiere in 1831 at St. Vallier. I am asking if anyone has any information on this family that they would be willing to share.

Merci Beaucoup,
John Muir
Sooke, British Columbia

bonjour Clermont,

Jean-Marie
Gatineau

Your question is not clear. Are you seeking information about a particular person? What is the full name of the person you seek? What is the name of his spouse? What is the date of birth?

Or, are you asking about what life was like in St-Vallier during that time period? If that is your question you need to contact the various historical societies in St-Vallier and the Kamouraska area. St-Vallier has a website at http://www.saintvallier.com/ (en francais).

Regards,
Sharyn

I am looking for the birth record for Louis LECLAIR/LECLERE who was born April 15, 1861 (1908 US Naturalization), 1863 (1900 US Census), or 1860 (1959 MN, US death certificate). I believe he is the Louis age 18 in the family of Jean LECLERE and wife Brigitte in the 1881 census in Armagh, Bellechasse, Quebec. His death certificate lists his parents as John LECLAIR and Bridget MENKIN. Thanks to anyone who can help.
