I am looking for any information on William and his family. I know they came from Ireland. Both William and his wife Margaret died in Ulverton. One son William married an Ella Elina Grant from New York and they ended up in Wisconsin.

Were there any other children? Where in Ireland did they come from? Where could they be buried in or near Ulverton (1883 william 1895 ella)? What port would they have come into from Ireland to end up in Ulverton?

Are there any relatives left in this area? I'd love to hear from you if there are.

Any information to start me on my way in Canada would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance,

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

I may have some information of interest. William James Porter and his wife Margaret Manley are my great great grandparents. I have some information about 5 of their children, however I believe that they may have had more than 5 in total. In each of the succeeding generations, either the first or second name of one of the sons was James, including mine. I have some information on this chain, plus some information on other family members who resided in the townships and surrounding regions. I believe that some of them also moved to the USA, however I do not have any information about them. I would be interested in sharing the information that I have and hearing about the information that you have.

Jim,

This is a pleasant surprise. These folks would be my great great great grandparents. (I'm descended through their son William b. 1848 d. 1926 m. Ella Grant). I would be more than willing to share what I have with you. I think that the information I have is pretty complete. Do you have any idea where the Porters or Manleys came from or any names or dates past William and Margaret? I'll check through my information and get back to you with what I have. Be patient though, I'm in the process of moving and will have to do a little rummaging.

Thanks Again. We'll talk soon.

Lisa

John Porter is my Great Grandfather. He immigrated from Three Rivers, Quebec at age fifteen. He went by the name Jean Baptiste Pacquin prior to changing his name to John Porter. He is buried in the Onekema Catholic cemetery.

I have some information on him as well as a couple of photos of him and his wife.

Hi
I don't know if you are still working on this - it's been a few years hahaha! All things come to those who wait!
William Porter and Margaret Manley (were my 3x great grandparents. Their son, John Porter, born May 1840 and baptized in Shipton, is my 2x ggf, married to Susannah Johnston. (Susannah's sister Margaret married John Porter's brother Thomas. They were all neighbours).
William and Margaret had 10 children that I could find. Apparently John Porter (a farmer, wheelwright, carpenter and coffin maker) built the original covered bridge in Ulverton (going to the old Woolen Mill on Porter Street). Besides a Porter Street, there is Porter Hill, Porter Rock, and Porter School.
There is a man who published a Diary and speaks of John Porter: (bottom left link to word doc)
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~qceastwn/archives/pat_jour...

Anyways, John and Susannah had 12 kids. One of them, Uncle Horace, was hit in the head by a brick during a tram strike and spent the rest of his life in the Verdun Asylum.
Their daughter Mary Jane married my ggf Clement King and they lived in Montreal.

I don't know anything beyond William and Margaret, Irish records are scarce, and too common a name.
Will share any info - hope to hear from you!
Dianne

William & Ella Porter are our great grandparents. The siblings of William named on a family "list" are:

Edward (Jennie) - children Margaret (Charles Guilford), Grace (Austria), Herbert
Margaret (H.A Stevens)
Mary(George Duston) - child Arthur
William (Ella Grant) - children Gertrude (F.E. Foster), Eddie, Lillian (Arthur Bennett), Irving (Pebble Coats), Grant (Sarah)
John
Jim - children Reg, Len, Elizabeth, Ethel, Beryl & Beulah (twins)
George
Tom - children Archie, Russell (Etta Burse), Harry, Charlie

These names match up with a family headed by William & Margaret in the 1861 and 1871 census of Durham, Drummond, Canada East (Quebec). A big problem occurs when William (son of William & Margaret) is found in the 1870 US Census of Washington, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, living with the family of Ella whom he will marry in 1871. It doesn't seem reasonable for him to be in two places at the same time.

Would be interested in what you have on this family,
Sandy

Hi Sandy.

It is possible to be on both Census. The rules were to be on the census of your permanent residence. If his parents thought he was returning, just away for work say, they could have put him on the Census in Quebec. (Or wishful thinking?)

You can check out my Public tree - Seale Family Tree and see what I have. Search for William Porter. That is my mother's maternal side of the family. Aunt Salome wrote a lot of the family history for my moms cousin, and she gave me copies.

If you have problems, let me know, I can invite you to my tree.

I am not presently a member of Ancestry, so was not able to view your tree. I would love to see what you have on your tree...and perhaps I have information that you don't have.
