Hi. Sorry, I just saw this posting of yours from two years ago... I don't belong to Ancestry.com so never saw it. Anyway, I'm the grandson of Edgar Clark from Bourg Louis, PQ. I have lots of info on the Clarks and some of the Sisson family, but have lost contact with any of them since my mothers' generation.
You ask about contacting Freda Roberge... unfortunately she passes away several years ago. There really isn't anyone left in the Bourg Louis area that I know of.
Clark McIntosh

Hello Kathleen. Thank you for your reply. Were you aware that the Quebec Anglican Garrison church records are also available online on Ancestry as part of the "Quebec, Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection), 1621-1967"? I found your Margaret Doyle on page 44 of the 1827 record book. The Drouin collection also includes the church records for other British garrisons in Canada, such as Chambly. If your ancestor's company moved around in Canada, you may find records of other children in the other locations. I have found 3 of my ancestors children's baptism records from 1819 to 1825. Unfortunately, he married in Dec 1817 while stationed in Quebec and I have yet to find the record book for that year. There is a book labeled 1817-1821, but it is mis-labeled and really starts with 1818. I have gone through GRO to have them search for his Overseas record, but they came up dry. His marriage is noted in his service records in the Chelsea Pensioners Records. The archivist for Quebec Anglican Diocesan Archives searched all his records without success and suggested the marriage may have been performed by a military cleric and the record sent home to England. My ancester was in the Royal Artillery. In 2011 I toured Quebec City and they have a wonderful national park where the Artillery Garrison buildings still stand including furnished officer quarters and reinactments. If you ever need to track your ancestor's company's movements around Canada, this is a helpful reference: Stewart, Charles H. “The Service of British Regiments in Canada and North America, A Resume”. Happy searching! Nancy

This is the internet reference for the UK GRO:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/.

I tried walking through the process for ordering online, and it accepted a search for an 1827 birth overseas. I didn't complete the process because I didn't want to spend the money on a test. I hope it works for you.

Kathleen

My ancestor John Doyle was also stationed at the Quebec City garrison from 1825 to 1828. His daughter Margaret was baptized at the garrison in 1827. I found her baptismal record on this film in the LDS collection: Quebec Garrison record, film 1430851. A cousin was also able to get the record from the GRO office in England from the Army Register. I'm sorry I don't know exactly where she wrote. She told me that the Brits kept track of births, marriages and deaths within the Army family. She was able to find John Doyle's marriage in Ireland the same way. This doesn't speak to your specific 1817 concern, but it perhaps gives you a clue as to where to look next.

Kathleen

I'm searching for a group of children who seem to have vanished from the records: Mary Mapes Thompson (b. 1822), Henry Alexander Thompson (1826), William Thompson (1828), and Margaret Thompson (1831), whose parents Henry Lancaster Thompson and Margaret Hume died in the cholera outbreak in Quebec City in 1834. One of their cousins, Mary Wellman, whose parents John Wellman and Mary Hume also died in the cholera epidemic, may have survived as well.

All of these children were baptized at Anglican Cathedral Holy Trinity Church. I can find no death records for them, so I'm assuming they survived the epidemic. However, they seem to have vanished into thin air. Does anyone know anything about ANY of these people? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

No, I haven't made any link to Ireland. If only we could find something with the county in Ireland they came from, it would be a wonderful breakthrough.
Regarding the religion, I think there was some recruiting in Ireland of non-Catholic families for settlement in the Bourg Louis area. Something else to research. My Alexander was married in the Church of England in B/L and all of their children were baptised there.
Yes, I actually meant to write Matthew Johnston as my 2nd great grandfather born in 1824 in Ireland. William H Johnston was my great grandfather. I am going to research to see if there is a link. Have you been able to make any headway into any information in Ireland? I have run into a roadblock. Susanna's name came up in a Canadian census as a 70 year old living with I think, her son. I am assuming she was his mother but could be an aunt, I suppose. I listed it as mom until I was proven wrong.
Thank you for getting back to me so soon-was surprised that the Johnstons were actually considered Protestant.

There's also a Mathew Johnston, born 1823-24 in Ireland, in Bourg Louis at the same time. Maybe they were all brothers??? She was originally suppose to make this trip on the Arosa Kulm out of Bremerhaven, but due to mechanical problems passengers were diverted to the SS Groote Beer in Rotterdam.

Any information, stories, photos would be greatly appreciated.
I just came across your email to me about the ruins of an old mill. Thomas Sissons did have a mill on the Portneuf River (near where the old railroad bridge crosses the river. I spent some time looking for the old mill, but only found some rocks that looked like they had been part of a foundation, but nothing much else. I know they also had a brick house out near the road - then called the "Back Range" (the road that passes by the anglican church. Would love to see your photos, and anything else you have found.
Clark

Hi, I'm doing research on the Gillespie family as part of a wider project on the history of music in Cork during the 19th century. So you know if your William Gillespie was a musician? Other members of the family ran music shops, and there was also an organ tuner. Catherine Gillespie ran a music shop in cork in 1845, for example. I'd be delighted to hear from you regarding this family.
Susan

Xainte Dupont (1596-1680)--her ancestry

Xainte Dupont was the wife of Zacharie Cloutier, a carpenter who emigrated in 1634 from the Perche area in Normandy to the Beauport area near Quebec City. Xainte and Zacharie are my 9th great-grandparents. Both are buried in Chateau-Richer. A number of Ancestry.com public members have traced Xainte Dupont's ancestry through several generations to a Francois Dupont (1450-1508), who is supposedly the son of Jean II du Pont-L'Abbe (1422-1478), a minor Breton noble. Documentation supports the existence of Xainte Dupont at one end of this chain, and Jean II du Pont-L'Abbe on the other. But I can find NO documentation for the existence of any of the people between them. These people are: Francois Dupont (1450-1508); Pierre Dupont (1486-1515); Charles Dupont (1515-1570); Denis Dupont (1540-1575); and Paul-Michel Dupont (1569-1608), who is supposedly Xainte's father. Has anybody found any documentation, other than the say-so of other Ancestry.com members, that Xainte Dupont can trace her ancestry back to the du Pont-L'Abbe's? It's of interest because, if this ancestral line actually existed, it can be traced from the du Pont-L'Abbe's all the way back to the Emperor Caesar Augustus of Rome. Many thanks!

In the 1891 census, James gives his occupation as "domestic", so he was certainly working for some more affluent family. Sillery was quite rural then and there were a number of estates where he could have been employed. I have been trying to find if one of them was purchased by an Englishman at about the right time, but no luck so far. I will look some more.

Susan

Thanks for that - Yes that's the right family. We've been trying to find any more about what James was doing for a job, and who he was working for. We know he worked as a horse groom before leaving England for Canada, and the suspicion is that he followed his employer out on a 10-year contract, but we've no real evidence to back that up.

The 1891 census has James and Sarah Yarnold and their three daughters all living in Sillery, all Church of England. The three girls, Ada (1886), Florence (1888) and Marian (1890) are all listed as being born in Quebec. Marian was baptised, Sillery Church of England, on June 9, 1890. I also found, quite sadly, a daughter Margaret, born on July 10, 1886 and "baptised privately, being sick, on the twenty-third and died on the twenty-fourth and was buried on the twenty-sixth, aged 14 days". This was at St George's Anglican, in Montreal, so they must have been there then. Helene Elizabeth, another daughter, was born on March 7, 1893 and baptised in Sillery. Is this the right family, James Yarnold and Sarah Lanham?

Im wondering if anyone can help me. My family emigrated for a short time to Canada from England, and settled in the parish of St Colomb de Sillery in Quebec. The Yarnold family moved to Sillery at some point between 1885 & 1890, and I have them definitely living in Sillery in 1890.

I have been told that they moved out there to follow the employer of the head of the house, James Yarnold, and that their daughter Marian was born out there in 1890. Im keen to find out more about Sillery at the time, and also for some pointers on where I can find out more about the family during their time there. I would also like to try to get a copy of Marian's birth certificate, but I dont know how to go about it. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

Thanks

My ancestor, Peter McIntosh, arrived in Quebec with the Royal Artillery in Sept 1817 and, according to his pension papers, was married in Dec 1817. His wife's name was Jane. The nice folks at St. Andrews Church did a search for me this past summer and did not find the marriage record. Mr. Sweeney at the Quebec Diocesan Archives searched his records and did not the marriage in the records of the two priests in the area during that time. He did not have the Garrison Church Records for year 1817. He also checked the non-Catholic BMD court house records and was unable to find the record. He suggested that perhaps the records for the Garrison went back to England, but it's a little odd when most other years are in Drouin. If you have any suggestions I would welcome them as I am at a dead end. Thank you!

We just built a house near the portneuf river and found ruins of a mill. According to Saint Raymond historical society it seems to be the mill of Thomas Sisson it was built around 1880. Do you have any information about it?
Thank you.

Hi,

I am trying to glean infomration on my grand-mother (Georgina) and my great grand-father (Lorne Stevenson) and saw your posting while searching through Google. My grandmother died young, well before I was born, and I think when my father (Robert Arthur Stevenson) was only a child. My father passed away in 2002 and we never got much info from him on his family and their history in and around Quebec City. What inof have you been able to uncover?

Thanks in advance,

John Stevenson
Seattle, WA

Thank you for the help. I'm hoping to find something more about them - specifically where in Ireland Andrew/Mary and Alexander came from. I'd also like to find something more about Alexander/Eliza Jane after 1861. They seem to have fallen off the planet.

I am researching my ancestors who lived in/around Bourg Louis beginning 1830's. Andrew Garvin and his wife, Mary Gray. Alexander Johnston and his wife, Eliza Jane Garvin. They were Irish members of the Church of England. Any help would be very much appreciated.
