I am wondering if anyone can tell me about burials at Ste. Anne's? I have a great grandfather who is said to be buried in the nave of the church. He is Jean Baptiste DeLisle who died Feb. 7, 1777. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Hi:

I am sure that you meant to write: «cave». In fact, it might have been the cave. There was no church basement at the time. They used to cut floor boards and dig a hole in the ground underneat the floor.

That practice was common for the most notable members of the parish.

What else would you like to know.

Thank you Jean-Marie. Do you know if these burials are marked? Is the place where the church is still exist? Where would I find records for Ste. Anne's? How would they have marked the grave if they were buried under the floor?

Hi:

There is now a Cathedral type church at Ste-Anne. You would have to contact the parish to find out is the old church has been preserved.

Where the practice of burying people in the basement of the church and where the church still exists, it is obvious that the floor had to be redone over the years and the traps have disappeared. In such cases, the have put on metal plates on the wall the names of all those buried under the floor.

Church records: Through the Family history centers of the Mormons (LDS) you may have them get from Salt Lake City the microfilm of the parish for the period you are interested in. My Gen. Society has the digitized records also. Depending on what you are interested in and the research time, I could do the look up if you cover the related costs. I have the means to reproduce records as written in the church registry. If interested, contact me at my email address: jjmmatteau@sympatico.ca
