Saint-Épiphane - Viger Township

Saint-Épiphane - Viger Township

The records for the parish of Saint-Épiphane seem to go back no further than 1863, so I suppose that that was when the parish was established. However, I have ancestors who lived in Viger Township at the time of the 1861 Census, which, as far as I know, is the same place. Where would children born before 1863 have been baptised?

Merci,

Your question has many answers. No Catholic church is registered for a location in Viger. There are several parishes with older records in Riviere du Loup. You might try any of these:

Isle-Verte: St-Jean-Baptiste (reg 1766)
Notre Dame du Portage (reg 1856)
Riviere du Loup: St-Patrice (reg 1813
St-Antonin (reg 1856
St-Arsene (reg 1849)
St-Eloi (reg 1852)
Ste-Georege de Cacouana (reg 1813)
St-Modeste (reg 1853)
Trois-Pistoles: Notre-Dame-des-Neiges (reg 1717)

I just found the records of two persons who reportedly were from the parish of St-Epiphane. They were both baptised in the parish of St Modest in 1861. Hope this helps.

Hi:
Just got connected. Viger is the name of the Township that Saint-Épiphane was established.
As far as I know, at the beginning of this village, it beared the name "Viger". It covered all the Township. Then, there was a kind of splittage. The north side of this Township had the town name of Saint-Épiphane and the south side was Saint-François-Xavier-de-Viger. Priests had their house in Saint-Épiphane and had the mission of Saint-F-X-V to cover too. So, if you see the town name of Viger at the beginning of the 1860's; this will mean Saint-Épiphane.
