John Burke arrived in Canada, age 11, on 29 Sept 1847 on he ship Champion. I cannot find him on any passenger list. He supposedly was residing with a La Page family on the 1851 census in Rimouski County. I have searched that census for several hours without finding him there.

Does anyone have a La Page family on the 1851 Rimouski County census with John Burke living with them. Why would a family there take a boy off of a ship to live with them ?

Regards, Bettye

Saw your posting on Ancestry.com. I too am interested on information concerning Clementine Dufour from my Family Tree. I have the same information that you share but have never been able to find the names of her parents, etc. She has me at a block wall as far as her parentage. Looking forward to your response.

Riki->Rimouski?

Hello fellow genealogists,

In a genealogy of the VOYER family, written prior to 1981, and going back to 1683 when the first child of our immigrant ancestor was born at Lorette, I keep running across confusing references to birth and marriage places, as:
Bic
Bic Riki
S-Donat Riki
S-Fabien Riki
Riki
S-Flavie Riki
Sacre-Coeur Riki
S-Valerien Riki
and sometimes, just:
S-Fabien, S-Valerien - without Riki
so far, never just Rimouski, tho it appears in other contexts.

My Questions:
1) Is Riki a shortened version of Rimouski?
2) Are these names of places...... of towns..... of parishes...??? (I think there are some of each.)

I've read that the two early parishes in Rimouski (County?) were St. Germaine and Ste. Cecile de Bic. I know that one doing genealogical research should never assume anything.... but I'm tempted to assume that references to Bic refer to Ste. Cecile de Bic as opposed to Le Bic, the town ten miles south of Rimouski. I am obviously having trouble distinguishing between town names and parish names.

My goal is just to get family groups "placed". The Gaspe Peninsula seems to be dominating at this point in my work, but I know many were also from Lac St. Jean, east and west, and south of there.

Can anyone help me with the place/church names? Any help will be immensely appreciated!

Thank you,
Patricia Cote Grogg
Surnames: Cote, Patry, Voyer, Rioux..... and on and on
patgrogg@gmail.com

I was able to find quite a lot - he was born Edouard Auguste Pineau about March 3, 1853 in Rimouski, Quebec to Auguste Pineau(Pineault) and Zoe LePage. He was the oldest boy in a family of six girls and three boys. He married Sarah Barbeau in Escanaba, Michigan on March 4,1889 and died in Rapid River, MI on September 9,1937. I have a lot more info on his sibs and who they married. He was my grandfather, but he died before I was born - my Mother was his daughter, Adele. How are you related to him? If you want more info, please email me directly at jazz2472@yahoo.com.

Just realized that you have been on other sites...and for a long time...and already was aware of John Ross' history. Guess I shouldn't have assummed you didn't know about him...got so excited about all the details that I got a bit over zealous.

As for Marie Jeanne: it is possible she was baptized at St. Antoine. There is no index for the years 1759 to 1769 and many of the pages are impossible to read because of the exposure and the handwriting and deterioration of some of the edges. So it could be that she was baptized there.

As for the witnesses to John Ross' death. Don't think they required more then two so it tells you little about the other sons. Of course, he died at a late age so some of the children...like Marie Jeanne...were already dead no doubt. Will see what I can find.

Have a great evening....

The church records were copied and given to the civil records keepers...so many were original to a church while others probably were simply civil. I can't tell you anything more specific. Perhaps someone with greater authority on the subject will step in and help us both out!

I did notice last night on the record of Louis I believe, the term civil contract was used. Unfortunately, where this would have occurred I don't know. I have looked and looked and looked. I thought about the Garrison records in Montreal and Quebec, but not there. I am sure that if we find the civil location, we will find a baptism for Marie Jeanne nearby. Maybe sometime later.

Did you know about John Ross being in the military? His death record was fascinating. I have found an article that refers to him as one of the members of the 78th that remained in Canada.

These are films available at either the Family History Library or the National Archives of Canada:

v. 885 78th Rgmnt. of Foot: Abernathy-Crerar 1760-1854 FHL Film904389 NAC list
v. 886 78th Rgmnt. of Foot: Cumming-Gillan 1760-1854 FHL Film904390 NAC list
v. 887 78th Rgmnt. of Foot: McDondald-Gilmour- McDonald 1760-1854 FHL Film 904391 NAC list
v. 888 78th Rgmnt. of Foot: McDougal-Marshall- Mathew 1760-1854 FHL Film 904392 NAC list
v. 889 78th Rgmnt. of Foot: Martin-Ross 1760-1854 FHL Film 904393 NAC list
v. 890 78th Rgmnt. of Foot: Rymer-Young 1760-1854 FHL Film 904394 NAC list

Here is another reference:
Les Écossais: The Pioneer Scots of Lower Canada, 1763-1855 By Lucille H. Campey..think this text is on line.

If you put the 78th Regiment in Google, you come up with Frasers Highlanders. While John was a Sargent Major, he would still be listed as a simple inlisted, so I have not found reference to him. There was a Captain named Thomas Ross...killed in a duel of all things, in the same Regiment. Wondered if there could be a connection...
particularly since the refernce to him listed his point of origin, his father and mother.

I am thinking, if you can locate land records for these that remained in Canada, you might find out where John Ross was between 1860 to 1864. Many recieved land grants. It might help with a location of the marriage. I did find a record of the birth of a child in the Quebec garrison records born to John Ross and wife Margaret Hamilton (Wasn't she the witch in the Wizard of OZ?--sorry, I digress!)in 1860 I believe. Looked for a marriage record and found none. Could just be a coincidence.

Military History could help you here a great deal.

Am attaching Jean Batiste, page 1. If it doesn't take this time, I will resend after saving it differently. Let me know. Not a problem.

If I find anything else of interest, I will send it along. Let me know how it goes.

yes I can see in Lisette's baptism here that is says born from civil contract which I have not been able to find either.
The title on some of these books is Registers of the Sheriff of Trois Rivieres? is that the right translation of Greffe? So these are civil records rather than religious? or is it just the photocopies that are civil? some have Presbytere..Presbyterian church.

on the PRDH files there was a note on the baptisms that I found that the marriage was not in a Catholic Church, so I don't think he converted, but rather tolerated that his wife would control the children's religious upbringing.

I take it from the burial record that any other sons must have been deceased by the time he was, would you agree or was it just a custom to have only 2 witnesses?

Thanks so much for this they are really cool.

OK...I went through the Maskinonge records one by one. I found a number of children in the records. I am including them below. However, I have not yet found the marriage of John Ross and Marie Louis Sincerny/St Cerny. Nor did I find the record of your ancestor, Marie Jeanne Ross.

I believe that Marie Jeanne was born before Lisette. She was not noted to be a minor at her marriage in 1885 so pretty much would have had to have been born prior to Lisette...there is no room in the births for her until she would have been too young to marry. I believe if I can find the marriage place, I will find the birth of Marie Jeanne.

The children are Catholic. John Ross probably converted to Catholicism if he hadn't been Catholic to begin with. She would not have been married in the Church if he wasn't and she was. It just wasn't allowed at the time if I remember correctly. And since the children are Catholic and baptized as such, he may have converted and then reverted when she died. Not sure.

I couldn't stack them all at the bottom of this post, so I am posting a few to this post in a different format and then will post others on another post to follow. I will continue to look to see what I can find.

1864 Birth of Lisette Ross
http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/2847/1764lisettelouiseros...
1865 Birth of Jean Baptiste Ross
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/449/1765jeanbatisterossbi...
1768 Birth of Guillaume Ross
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/6033/1768guillaumerossbir...

So, nothing on Maskinonge. They are missing the years you need and I haven't found anything else so far.

However, I did locate the record of death for John Ross. If you didn't know all the information in this record prior to this, you are in for a treat. It might explain the cross over between the French and the English!

It was in Louisville, Protestant Church, not in St. Antoine which is also in Louisville.

This has a large amount of info in a small document...if it were my relative, I would have been thrilled to find out about all of this!

Back later if I find more.

Can you tell me where the first child was born, when, and the name? Often it will allow me to work backwards. In Riviere-du-Luop, the French Bastist Church is the only Protestant church listed and doesn't go back that far. The Catholic church there, is missing the from about 1757 to 1770 or so...so no hope if for some reason it was there.

In Maskinonge, there is nothing at all that is Protestant. Might be a neighboring community. So need to know who got baptized where and when to start looking.

Let me know and I will check for you.

Susan

those images look terrific, I couldn't get the site to let me register?? any chance you could look up John (jean-Baptiste) Ross and Marie-Louise Sincerny (Delpee-dit St.Cerny) should be around 1763-1764. Since he was protestant I have not found the marriage in any of the catholic parishes I haved checked. possible areas are Riviere du Loup or Maskinonge where they have children baptised. don't know if the site covers that region thanks JeanneMarie

Wish I could help there...I was hoping they were included on the marriage record, as in the French records.

However, there are no comprehensive lists of immigrants arriving in Canada prior to 1865. Until that year, shipping companies were not required by the government to keep their passenger manifests.

There were more then 1700 McMil* in the 1851 census...too many to determine if John had relatives that were here as well. Other problem is that you don't know when he arrived, except sometime between birth and 1840. So you don't know if he came as a child with parents, or as a young man.

You may wish to check the holdings of the Family History Library.

This first entry is for a census in Quebec in the 1830's. It might let you know if he was in the area before 1835 and if other McMillens were there as well. It is:
ll. Québec County cont., p. 553-648 12. Saguenay County, p. 649-693 13. Rimouski County, p. 694-742 14. Acadie Dist., p. 743-793 15. Beauharnois County, p. 794-854 16. Berthier County, p. 855-956 FHL US/CAN Census Area
1375927

This next is a link to a page about a book about Metis. It is not available on film, but you might be able to locate it through the Inter-library loans system. It covers history of Metis from 1820 or so...and covers some people who were missionaries and documentation of things like land holdings. So it might apply:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermain...

Wish there were more. I am not very practiced in searching Canadian records other then birth, marriage and death in Quebec. Maybe someone more informative will jump in here and offer you some help.

You may wish to contact the Canadian Archives and see what they might have that could help in terms of records.

Good Luck and if I find anything else that might help, I will certainly let you know.

Even though they are in Metis, Rimouski in 1851 census...under name McMillen...they were not married in Metis as no Protestant Church was there at that time.

They were married in Riviere-du-Loup, in the Anglican Church because the Presbetarian one was not yet built. Here are the marriage records:

Marriage of John McMillen and Margaret Craig, 1841:
http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/2073/marriageofjohnmcmillen...

Baptism of Alexander McMillen, 1841:
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/561/baptismofalexandermcm...

Is there something else I can get for you?
I understand. I was only attempting to start with the closest fact and move backwards from there.

I did find a Jean in Rimouski, Rimouski, born in 1863, bur in August...so this may not be him. No Arthur in 1865. Checked Trois Pistoles, Ste. Flavie, Ste. Luce, St. Cecile du Bic. So far nothing.

But the 1900 census indicated that he had applied for first papers. Check in Wisconsin for these. They might have additional information on where he was born, name of parents. Never naturalized by 1930 so doubt he became a citizen.

Will continue to look.

I am looking for information on Margaret Craig, born in 1823 of Scottish parents William Craig and Janet McKelvie who immigrated to Metis, Rimouski from Paisley, Scotland in 1820. John McMillan and Margaret Craig were married in or about 1840 in 1840, and I am looking for this record. John Margaret immigrated to DePere, Brown (near Green Bay) probably between 1852 and 1855. Their children are:
Alex McMillan born in 1841
Jenette 1842
Mary Anne 1844
John 1846
William 1848
Margaret 1851
Nancy 1854
John McMillan was born in or about 1810 in Scotland, and died April 23, 1877 in DePere, Brown, WI. I am looking for information on his parents or immigration records. I am also looking for Canadian census or other records from the 1820's to 1850's

Looking for any vital records or information for the Corbett/Corbet family from Saint Octave de Metis, Rimouski, Quebec.
Thomas Corbet married Julia Robert July 19, 1861, Gaspe
According to the 1881 census their children were:
Thomas W.
Alfred
Frederic
Elisa
Julie
Henri
Matilda
all born in Quebec.
