Baby boy born 1953, adopted in Montreal, family from Rimouski or Kamouraska areas...

This is a shot in the dark, but hopefully the right people read this. My husband's father was born in 1953 (allegedly Nov. 3, 1953) and was adopted by a Jewish family in Montreal. Of course, he isn't Jewish by birth, but rather French Canadian. He was one of the black market adoption babies from that time period. I suspected as much for years but then my husband did the DNA tests via FTDNA and 23andme.com and it confirmed such. We have a lot of relatives coming up in Rimouski and Kamouraska (and surrounding areas) and in Maine and in Vermont. Possible surnames associated with one of the biological parents include: Roy, Paradis and Desjardins, and others. Like I said, a shot in the dark. My father-in-law is almost six feet tall, had blond hair as a child but it turned almost black as he got older, blue eyes, biggish nose, big ears, known back issues and his feet point outward. Also developmental delays with males in the family (late walkers, mostly). My email is theappeltree@hotmail.com

I hope someone recognizes this info.
Joseph Lavoie b. 1702 Riviere-Ouelle, Kamouraska, Quebec

I'm looking for CORRECT information on the death date of Joseph Lavoie, b. 1702 to Jean Lavoie (1660-1721) and Marie-Madeleine Boucher (1670-1723)in Riviere-Ouelle. Joseph married Genenieve Miville dit Deschenes on May 13, 1725. They had at least 4 sons Francois, Joseph, Bernard and Augustin. Many people list his death in 1722 or 1727 which is not possible since these sons where born between 1726 and 1729.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks so much for your reply. Sorry for the delay. I haven't been checking my incoming messages like i should. Your notes were most helpful. I didn't have first child, Francois Chabot 9/25/1779 Trois Riv. Son of Frs. Chabot and Genevieve Gagnon. That places their marriage before 1780. I was looking at later dates.
There maybe a small correction to make regarding Marie-Madeleine Pinel 9/26/1726 Ste Anne de la Pocatiere. Tanguay has her parents as Charles-Francois Pinel and Marie-Anne Ouellet and her grandparents as Francois-Xavier Pinel and Louise Coutancineau (your spelling- Constantineau- looks better). Refer to page 371 (volume for P's etc)
Thanks again for all the info.

Doug
Hi. I rechecked the info i found regarding Genevieve Gagnon and associated families. The 9/15/1790 burial record at St Anne de la Pocatiere is pretty convincing. Available online - Drouin collection. Wish i could find the marriage record of Frs. Chabot and Genevieve Gagnon. Since their children were born in Rimouski, it may be recorded there. But, since Francois married his first wife in Montmagny, it suggests that he moved around a little bit. If anyone has access to St Anne de la Pocatiere marriage records (showing parents of the married couple), please check. Whether yes or no, it would be a big step forward.

Genevieve Gagnon 1752?

Hi

My reading of french handwriting is not too sharp. There's a burial record for a Genevieve Gagnon about April 1790 at St-Anne-de-la-Pocatiere. I think it says "widow of Chabot ..age 37". If this is correct, then I'm thinking that the wife of Francois Chabot by his 2nd marriage may be the daughter of Jacques Gagnon and Marie-Madeleine Pinel. Their Genevieve was born 24 Jan 1752 at same location. Unless I'm mistaken, neither Tanguay nor Genealogie.org nor Rootsweb has the parents of Genevieve, the second wife of Francois Chabot (son of Jean-Bte and Genevieve Isabel). Marriage record? Daughter, Marie-Francoise,was born 15 Sept 1784 in Rimouski per Tanguay page 596.

My problem is that I can't find the death of Jos. Daniau/Laprise that allowed Angela (Angelique) to marry the second time. Can anyone help me?

Oh I see. Thank you very much. That is very detailed information. This means likely that although she was probably in the family tree elsewhere, she is unlikely to be the mother of my direct line. Possibly one of her siblings was the mother or father of someone I directly descend from then. As common a name as that, I'm still surprised there's another Marie Louise from the very same area as the one I descend directly from.

I did not know that it was common for them to keep their maiden names. Although I understood that it listed them with dates of death, I assumed that was only for recording perposes, so thank you for that as well.
Lavoie is the maiden name of Marie Louise who married Narcisse Hudon.

It was/is very common for a married woman in Quebec to use her maiden name. Often in a burial record of a married woman it says maiden name, wife of husband's name.

I didn't find the burial record of this Marie Louise Lavoie but found her baptism record 1823 St Louis, Kamouraska and that she died between Jul 1864 when her daughter, Marie Louise Arthemise, died and 30 Apr 1866 when Narcisse Hudon married again was described as the widower of Marie Louise Lavoie.

I think that in the 1861 census transcribed as M. Louise Larvié [the written name looks like Lavoie to me and someone else has suggested that correction] is the wife of Narcisse Hudon, then after her are listed their children, starting with Baptiste and ending with Henriette, age 2.

In the family below the husband is Edouard Belanger and his wife Marie Roussel with their children following.
The wife often used/uses her maiden name in Quebec. If looking for a burial it is recommended to search using the maiden name. It might say for instance Marie Tremblay, veuve de [widow of] Jean Leveque.

The marriage of M Louise Lavoie and Narcisse Hudon took place at St Denis de la Bouteillerie, Quebec in 1844. His parents Joseph Hudon and Angelique Gagnon;
her parents Joseph Lavoie and Marie Celeste Clairmond [sometimes seen as Clairmont or Clermont].
I have been looking everywhere trying to find a link to this person. I descend from Larabies, and one ancestor was supposed to be Marie Louise Larabie (we're not 100% sure on the maiden name, but believe it sounded like Mau). I did find some information in the 1861 Census on here showing a record for a "M. Louise Larvié" who was also in the 1851 census as Lavoie. Dates of birth and family/neighbours names match in each of those 2 census' so I know the census' are related to each other at least. Also in the 1861 census it shows she was married and Larvié is her last name while she's married, so I'm assuming she did get it when she married, but it doesn't show another Larvié to confirm that with it. She must have been with her husband and had her kids earlier or later, but I can't find any further sources - I just can't find anything to link her to her husband, children, or parents to rule out the possiblity that she kept her maiden name and is actually unrelated or to confirm if this is her. Even the massive Drouin collection couldn't turn up more leads for me...I'm really hoping someone else will know something, it didn't even have a "family tree hint" for me this time. I really just feel I've all but hit a brick wall on this one... :(

Thank you sincerely in advance. Any small bits of information will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Sharyn:

That is a wonderful explanation of the use of Dit for the French names. I imagined it suggested "say" or "said", sort of like English "called" as in a nickname. But do you know the real meaning or function, and where would the second word come from - a place? like riviere for Dit Lariviere, maybe for those who emigrated or at least moved a considerable distance from home. My grandmother's line is Lachance but the Lachance.org site takes her back to Andre Pepin, whose son began to use Pepin Dit Lachance, perhaps in France. Grandma's dad decided to drop the Pepion Dit, so it looks like a nickname worked its way up to a proper name?!?! That's fine with me. I will go back to that site shortly, but I'd still like to hear your take on it. Further, I'm having trouble getting anything before David Bertrand m. to Marguerite Simmons whose descendants seem to be gathered in the Pontiac/Renfrew area . If David came from elsewhere, do you have some common add-ons that Bertrands used? I've seen some, and if my hunch is right, even if only sometimes, I may search by a geographic hook.

Merci Beacoup
Domo Arigato Gozaimasu
Robert Herman

Clarisse Labrie & Ambroise Caron
