Becky - Just finding the time to get back into my research. My great grandfather John Levesque supposedly was from Iberville Quebec Canada. He married Victoria Leroux. I'm not sure how many children they had but I do know they were all named with the letter A. The ones I do know are Antoine, Antoinette, Alcide, Albert, Alice and Angeline. They resided in New Bedford MA.

Hi back Donna, yes still on here... It's always fun to work on genealogy with someone but I don't know if we're related until we can decipher if they're in the same family. I know my ggrandfa was LeVesque (or LeVeque)in Quebec and that is the same direct translation he made to English when he emigrated. I might be on for a couple of late nights. I have to use the phone line late when no one else might want it....but I'll be busy Saturday and Sunday. So this might be it after tomorrow night for awhile... Massachusetts hey? That's where my whole Haskell line on my dad's side came from... Cape Cod and environs. Take care. Becky in MI

Becky - I am so happy your still on. I spoke with my Mom and this is what she told me. John Levesque which was my great-grandfather (I'm thinking, maybe the son of Joseph Levesque), was unable to read or write. When he was learning how to write his name the teacher told him to use the name BISHOP instead because it was shorter. Unknown to me the word Levesque in french means "bishop". So my Mom said that her grandfather was always referred to by his nickname of bishop. Maybe you already knew that but I figured I'd pass that along to you. I am in Massachusetts and like I said, I've only been on a month and have made lots of progress. I currently have just the US subscription but will be upgrading to the world tomorrow. If I can find anything to help you out I will gladly post it here. My family members are Lebert's but their grandparents were Levesque's. Let me know when you will be signing off until the winter so that I don't inundate you with stuff. I will hold the info till you return. Do you know who Joseph Levesque was married to? Where they were married? Take care Donna

Hi Donna - yes I'm still here and thanks for posting. I don't know either if we're related. I'm disabled so I don't have the money to get papers from Quebec. My oldest aunt - who just died - once told me that our Joseph Levesque (Bishop) came from L'Isle Verte which is in the parish Riviere du Loup. But I've never written the parish to see if they have any records - or whoever would keep that data. Maybe we can get our notes together at some point. I won't be on here much until winter...in the meantime, if you need to get in touch I'm at becky1ATtriton.net Becky in MI
Switch AT to @

Becky -

Just joined Ancestry.com about a month ago. I'm having a great time researching my ancestors. When reading your post, I just had to respond. My great-grandfather's was John Levesque from Quebec Canada. Everyone called him "Bishop" as a nickname according to my late grandmother. Don't know if there is any correlation between the two though. John Levesque was married to Victoria Leroux. DOn't even know if your still on this site as your post was from 2006. Hope you are!
Donna

No sure, since I cannot translate very well. Maybe someone else can help here.

But usually an unnamed baby is still born and don't think they would have listed a named child at birth as a unnamed infant. I think twins would be more likely, one surviving and one not.

I will see if anything else out there can point in the right direction.

Back later

Thank you for the info.
The record for Marie Marguerite is the correct person.
The record for Joseph Esther shows he is a sibling. However, right below this entry is a death entry for a child unnamed born to Jean Marie Castonguay. Do you think that is Joseph Esther or perhaps a twin that died.
Sylvester married Marcelline Belanger so I'm not sure if Joseph Esther and Sylvester are the same person.

Thanks so much.

The two records that I'm looking for are my great mother's Marguerite Castonguay (may be written Gastongue) and her brother Sylvestre. It seems that there may be two Marie Marguerite Castonguay --- one born in 1793 and one in 1796. Perhaps the one in 1793 died. If you could confirm this, I would be most appreciative.

Sylvestre's date of birth I believe is 1795 but it may be 1799 or 1800. That is where the gaps seem to be in the sibling birth order

Thanks for your help.

If you have the exact date of birth-or a good guess- I can get it for you. Problem is that a lot of this stuff isn't indexed and some of the records are difficult when dealing with around such and such a year. In 1851/52 census listed at age 55. Also someone listed her as born Rimouski in 1793 but I checked and found nothing.

The marriage of Jean Marie is below. It was his second marriage...the first to Francoise Gagnon. The marriage is in St-Jean-Port-Joli on 1 Jan 1788. His parents were Pierre Castonguay ad Angelique Morin and hers were Jean-Marie Saint-Pierre and Angelique Coututier.

I have searched the Drouin Collection for birth records between 1780 and 1820. However, I am unable to access them on-line. Does anyone know why?
Specifically I am looking for the birthdates for the children of Jean Marie Castonguay and Marie Marguerite St. Pierre, including my great great grandmother, Marguerite Castonguay who married Benjamin Belanger in St. Roch 1814.
If anyone can help me find this information, please contact me. Thank you.

This is from a list I belong to;
am Lawrence (Larry) Bergeron. I, along with several other
Bergeron-Damboise descendants of Barthelemy Bergeron and Genevieve Serreau
are in the process of planning a Bergeron/Damboise Reunion.
Everything is still in the planning stage at this point although we do have
a preliminary target date as the summer of 2009 no exact date has been set
as yet. And the place would be Fredericton, New Brunswick
The Society of History of the River St John (SHRSJ) is planning a 250 year
commemoration of the destruction of the Village of Point St Anne at
Fredericton New Brunswick and we want to plan our event to coincide with
theirs.
Our desire would be to have the site of the Church and Cemetery site set
aside as a "national historic site" (as we would call it here in the
states). This would have to be done by either the National or Provincial
governments.
(This is where it is widely believed that Barthelemy and Genevieve are
buried)
At this time we have "cousins" from Louisiana, Virginia, Michigan, Maine,
families from Quebec, New Brunswick and New Hampshire attending and we
would like to have as many more as possible.
As I said before there are many details to be ironed out, Passports to
acquire, lodging to get, a place to hold the reunion and so forth. Please
try to join us!
Regards
If interested please contact;
Lawrence Bergeron
larrybergeron@earthlink.net
The 206,064 people who live in the Bas-Saint-Laurent are distributed among 135 cities, towns and villages and grouped into 8 administrative regions known as regional county municipalities (RCM's):

Kamouraska
Rivière-du-Loup
Témiscouata
Les Basques
Rimouski-Neigette
La Mitis
Matane
La Matapédia

The populated areas are located in the lowlands of the St. Lawrence, the foothills of the Appalachian plateau and in the Témiscouata and Matapédia valleys. Urban centers are distributed throughout the region. In each of the RCM's there is a major center which offers services to the surrounding population. Rimouski is the largest of these centers with a population of approximately 33,000

All queries for this region should be posted on the board for the MRC where records may be kept. For lists of municipalities within each MRC go to: http://www.bas-saint-laurent.org/texte.asp?id=418
