Becky -

Just joined Ancestry.com about a month ago. I'm having a great time researching my ancestors. When reading your post, I just had to respond. My great-grandfather's was John Levesque from Quebec Canada. Everyone called him "Bishop" as a nickname according to my late grandmother. Don't know if there is any correlation between the two though. John Levesque was married to Victoria Leroux. DOn't even know if your still on this site as your post was from 2006. Hope you are!
Donna

Hi Donna - yes I'm still here and thanks for posting. I don't know either if we're related. I'm disabled so I don't have the money to get papers from Quebec. My oldest aunt - who just died - once told me that our Joseph Levesque (Bishop) came from L'Isle Verte which is in the parish Riviere du Loup. But I've never written the parish to see if they have any records - or whoever would keep that data. Maybe we can get our notes together at some point. I won't be on here much until winter...in the meantime, if you need to get in touch I'm at becky1ATtriton.net Becky in MI

Becky - I am so happy your still on. I spoke with my Mom and this is what she told me. John Levesque which was my great-grandfather (I'm thinking, maybe the son of Joseph Levesque), was unable to read or write. When he was learning how to write his name the teacher told him to use the name BISHOP instead because it was shorter. Unknown to me the word Levesque in french means "bishop". So my Mom said that her grandfather was always referred to by his nickname of bishop. Maybe you already knew that but I figured I'd pass that along to you. I am in Massachusetts and like I said, I've only been on a month and have made lots of progress. I currently have just the US subscription but will be upgrading to the world tomorrow. If I can find anything to help you out I will gladly post it here. My family members are Lebert's but their grandparents were Levesque's. Let me know when you will be signing off until the winter so that I don't inundate you with stuff. I will hold the info till you return. Do you know who Joseph Levesque was married to? Where they were married? Take care Donna

Hi back Donna, yes still on here... It's always fun to work on genealogy with someone but I don't know if we're related until we can decipher if they're in the same family. I know my ggrandfa was LeVesque (or LeVeque)in Quebec and that is the same direct translation he made to English when he emigrated. I might be on for a couple of late nights. I have to use the phone line late when no one else might want it....but I'll be busy Saturday and Sunday. So this might be it after tomorrow night for awhile... Massachusetts hey? That's where my whole Haskell line on my dad's side came from... Cape Cod and environs. Take care. Becky in MI

Becky - Just finding the time to get back into my research. My great grandfather John Levesque supposedly was from Iberville Quebec Canada. He married Victoria Leroux. I'm not sure how many children they had but I do know they were all named with the letter A. The ones I do know are Antoine, Antoinette, Alcide, Albert, Alice and Angeline. They resided in New Bedford MA.
