Doug, The George that died in 1853 PEI, age 79, might be the father of the George John Howell that married Mary Alice Ellis Biggs. Mary's husband, George, died about 1859. His youngest child, Mary Alice Ellis Howell was born about 1859, that's after the elder George died in 1853, so they can't be the same George. 1862 Land records for son, Joseph Howell, says his late father helped work the land. The land records are:
RS108 Land Petitions 1783-1918, PANB- F9027 (Provincial Archives New Brunswick)Year 1862 - Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada - East of 112: Bass River
The petition of Joseph Howell of the Parish of Weldford, Kent County...That he is a British subject, over 18 years of age, and is not at present interested in, nor the owner of any other land. That he is desirous of purchasing for actual settlement 93 acres of Wilderness Crown Land, situated as follows: North of Bass River. SE side of "Harly Road and described in the Returns of Survey favor of E. Walker and W. Wilson. Petitioner is the oldest son of the late George Howell has seven brothers and one sister the youngest being only 4 years of age is willing to post bonds to amount of ....County: Kent; Parish: Weldford; Acres 93; If Vacant: Yes; If surveyed: yes, but not paid for; If Improved: yes, partly by the late G. Howell and partly by petitioner.

Thanks very much. This is most interesting. George went back to PEI, leaving his wife and Kids in NB? And maybe he was a bunch older than his wife???

I need to do some additional research on George Howell to fully understand his relationship with his wife Mary Ann Ellis Biggs. I did the Ancestry DNA test, and my closest genetic relative in Ancestry DNA shares a BIGGS surname with me. A BIGGS from KENT, New Brunswick. So I definitely know I'm on the right track... I will post as I learn more.

Thanks

Doug
On familysearch.org I found in the database "Prince Edward Island Death Card Index, 1721-1905" the following index card:
"Howell, George, age 79, died 1853-Lot 18, Record from Archives-newspapers". This would make his birth date abt. 1774. I don't know what newspaper this came from. This is the
earliest record I've found so far for Howell's in Lot 18.
I descend from John C. Howell & JohnAnn Stewart, Bass River, Weldford, Kent, New Brunswick.
Greetings,

I am looking for any information for 2 of my Arnold relatives. John Arnold and his sister Jane Green who seemed to have gone to live in Prince Edward Island sometime between 1840s and 1890s. They were born in Gracehill, Antrim, Northern Ireland, were raised in the Moravian faith and their father Robert was a carpenter. Any infomation that people can give will greatfully received

This helps, especially since searching online for info about Philip James turns up this entry in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography:

http://biographi.ca/009004-119.01-e.php?id_nbr=3986

It notes that Philip was a Bible Christian minister. So now comes the question: are the records of the Bible Christian denomination archived anywhere in PEI?

- David.

This seems to fit together. It appears that Margaret McIsaac was James' first wife and mother of your grandmother. His second wife was Annie McIntyre.
Two other children of Malcolm Hunter and Mary Ann McAuley (McAulay) can be found at http://www.gov.pe.ca/archives/baptismal/ : John William, born October 20, 1859, baptised November 20, 1859, at St. Dunstan's Basilica, Charlottetown, P.E.I. and Margaret, born February 16, 1863, baptised the same day, at St. Columba R.C. Church, P.E.I.
In the census records for 1871 New Brunswick, there is a Malcolm Hunter, age 42, with wife, Mary Ellen, age 32, and a daughter, age 7. This may possibly be Malcolm with a second wife?
Linda

Thank you for the reply, I have seen James living with Mcauleys in a Canadian record but couldn't find a connection. Thank you. Annie was my great grandmother, oddly if they were married in 1906, that was after my grandmother was born. If he was widowed at that time then she would have been my grandmothers step mother not birth mother, now wondering, who was? I also have his birth as 8/20/1864.

Thank you for the reply. I really do appreciate it. A lot of the info. I have and some I have seen and not sure of. James wife was Mcintyre not Mciassac and her fathers name isn't a match so I am not sure about the marriage record. The other Boston records are correct. I had come across that one record from Canada placing him with the Mcauley family, not sure if that is him or not. I cannot seem to find anything else for James. birth, siblings parents. this is a wall for me so far.

LDS FamilySearch has the marriage record and image for James Hunter, widowed, married November 6, 1906, to Annie McIntyre at Boston. His parents are given as Malcolm and Mary A. McCauley.
FamilySearch also has the record and image for the indexed baptism card of a James Hunter, June 1, 1861? (question mark is on card - year of baptism or year of birth is obviously incorrect), at St. Columba R.C. Church, P.E.I., birth date August 13, 1861. Parents are "Malcom" Hunter and Mary Ann McAully.
Linda

Most baptisms are online except some if they were in an area where minister took the records with him or a church burnt.

If you think about the possibility of Mary Bonin at 53 you must recall the this Williams first wife was also about that age having her last son Alexander...probably why she died.

Sherri

I went through the several sources you suggested, thank you. I think that the William Yeoman marrying Mary Bonin in July 1873 could be a possibility, as you suggest. My great grandmother Sarah would have been born 1 month before the wedding, in June. However, if her brother William was born around 4 years later, that would mean that Mary Bonin would have been about 53; so that is sort of pushing the time line.

I went through many Canadian records. I found some listings in New Brunswick, one that could be possible. There is, in the 1891 census, a Wm. Yeoman age 49 married to Ellen age 34. They have a son William who is listed as 10/12 years old. (oops, maybe that meant he was only 10months old, I will have to double-check). That could put him at about 1878-1979 or so. Ellen would have been born about 1857, and if Sarah was born in 1873, then Sarah would have been about 16. Sarah is not listed on the census form. However, in some Boston census records, Sarah is listed as having arrived in Boston in 1891, and thus could have missed the NS census.

It seems that a number of PEI records before 1900 are not readily available. So, possibly my family might still have been from PEI anyway.

Thanks so much for your help and advice.

Kevin

Kevin
I did find one other family in NS archives but dates do not match to birth of your William of 1877 as marriage is 1893.

William born abt 1853 married Elizabeth McLean 1893 Halifax he is 40 bachelor born Scotland...this suits your Scotland story but not birth of William 1877 and Sarah 1873 unless this William was married before but Bachelor written on papers.

There is a death record for William 1919 age 66 who would appear to be this William above
There is also another 1908, age 25, so birth abt 1883 William Yeoman, laborer.

might be Mary Bonin, sorry hard to read some of old records oline. At least marriage of William to Mary mentions this Williams father to be Donald Yeoman mother Mary. He is 43 putting his birth to 1829/30 though below suggests 1826. Mary is 49 so she is born about 1825 - find it hard to think she would have children in 1873 (sarah) and 1877 (William) but it is certainly possible!

Based on that, if it related I have this: If not disregard.

Petitpas, Catherine (Gertrude) (~1829 - 1872)
b. ABT. 1829
d. 16 Mar 1872
father: Petitpas, Hilarion(~1798 - 1875)
mother: Murphy, Ursule(*1799 - ~1875)
spouse: Yeomans, William (*1826 - )
- m. 27 Dec 1850 in St. Peter's Church, Dartmouth, NS
----------child: Yeomans, James (*1861 - )
this son was not listed in NS archives online either...but he obviously existed.

Yeomans, William (*1826 - )
b. in Shelburne, NS
spouse: Petitpas, Catherine (Gertrude) (~1829 - 1872)
- m. 27 Dec 1850 in St. Peter's Church, Dartmouth, NS
----------child: Yeomans, James (*1861 - )

Yeomans, James (*1861 - )
father: Yeomans, William(*1826 - )
mother: Petitpas, Catherine (Gertrude)(~1829 - 1872)
spouse: Petitpas, Agnes Catherine (1862 - 1940)
- m. 16 Sep 1889

Best guess Bridit is a sister - William married twice...as Catherine was over 50 giving birth to Alex in 1872...I would say she died not long after and William remarried to Mary Bodin having your William and Sarah, but where, I am not certain, can't see any records in NS online.

Your thoughts to this?

Kevin
NS Genealogy, if you google that will take you to search of archives. I found a William Yeoman age 43 widow marrying a widow Mary Bodin age 49 on July 14 1873. Married in Chezzetcook, NS, says he was born in Indian River. Probably the one in NS, but there is an Indian River in PEI.

Still see no children of names William or Sarah in PEI or NS baptism records that are available online.

In NS there appears to be a William married to a Catherine Pitipas having a daughter Bridit Feb 1866 records say they married in 1849.

They also have an Alice Ada July 1870 now her name is Gertrude says married 1851

Then son Alex Mar 1873 still calling herself Gertrude m now in 1849 - which matches date the Catherine used and I think they are one in the same persons -

And in 1867 they had Virginia father William mother Catherine Yeoman says married 1850.

Also the only other Yeoman names in NS are a Robert to a Sarah Stewart married 1866 who have a Bessie 1870 Nov 8 and Martin Weldon 1875 and Serina Steel 1872 Oct 2, they are all born Pugwash area.

Then there is one I can't read HL or WL? Yeoman to Mary Colter have son John Henry 1872 and daughter Maggie Marie 1875.

Not sure this has helped you any but maybe Bridet was a sister to your William vs mother of William? Maybe William's first wife died and he remarried Mary Bodin having William and Sarah, but can't find births in NS of a William and Sarah.

It is possible they moved to USA or somewhere else?

https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com

Hi again Kevin:

I will do some digging - I did check NS Gen Web - gov't archives online and did not see them listed there - as well as Newfoundland. I will do some more checking in Maritimes online from what sources I have saved and I can always go direct to archives on PEI to see if I can find them at all.

There are YEO family names here...quite a few and some Sarah and Williams....you can see those by checking PEI Census records online, however I did not match up approx. ages when I checked. Just though Yeo became Yeoman maybe the father being a seafarer.

I have a case where my McWilliam line became Williams in USA, he owed money, left PEI and changed his last name. How funny one could do that.

I can't get to archives until next week, I am working 6 days straight but will try and see what I can do.

Sherri

Thanks for your help in trying to trace my great-grandmother and her brother back to PEI.

From the Boston Census records, my grandmother Sarah A. Yeoman is listed as having been born in PEI in June 1873. Her brother William E. Yeoman is listed as having been born in PEI on 09 Jul 1877.

A morcel of info I have found says that their father was William also and their mother was possibly Bridgit. However, one source says that the father was born in PEI and another says that he was born in Scotland.

My father remembers discussions growing up that his grandmother was from PEI, but nobody knows from where. Perhaps I should also check other maritime areas in Canada, in case they were accurate in their retelling.

Kevin

Hi Kevin
I am not seeing very many Yeoman names in PEI - zero in baptism index online and only two in the census records from 1841-1901. 1881 lists a Michael age 70 and no one else, 1901 lists Michael 69 - same one? - and a Catherine, she is quite young.

Are you sure they were born in PEI? Where do you get your information from? Is it on a census in Boston? Do you have names of any of sons born to William, that might provide a lead or of Sarah's?

I am looking for the burial place of James Craswell who died 30 Nov 1865 and his wife Mary Sutherland Craswell, who died shortly after.

James was a shipbuilder and died at 36, leaving a wife and four small children. They lived in the Summerside area and their religion was Presb.

Is there anyone who can help me locate them? The Craswell's were on the Island from the early 1800's and were a large family. James and Mary are my ggreat grandparents.
