Surnames: Doucet, Aylward
My GGG grandmother Elisabeth Doucet (born abt 1800) married Michael Aylward in Tignish, PEI around 1825-26. The family later moved to Shippagan, NB where she was listed as a widow in the 1871 Gloucester County Census. If anyone could tell me her birthplace and/or parents, I would appreciate the information.

I am descended from this couple and have bits and pieces on their descendents but have no idea who Michael's or Elizabeth's parents were. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

One of their children,Sylvain, was born in Tignish (as per his death record) and changed the spelling of his surname to Elward at some point. He died in Richibucto, NB at the age of 97 in 1919.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am afraid Elisabeth Doucet & Michael Aylward maybe a dead end. I checked at the National Archives & Library in Ottawa and the records they do have for the Catholic church in Tignish do not go back far enough to cover their marriage.
There were two Doucet families in Tignish in the early nineteenth century, but neither had a daughter named Elisabeth or a daughter who married a Michael Aylward. As for him, he was an Irish immigrant and records from Ireland before 1850 are almost nonexistent. There was a Richard Aylward on PEI in the early 1800s, but it is not known if they were related.

Thanks Steve,

Contrary to popular belief, there are a great number of Irish records that remain extant. The problem is that the Aylwards were in Ireland for several hundred years and there were hundreds of Aylward families spread across several counties.

I am hoping to find a clue somewhere that will help narrow the search to a specific county. I am fully prepared to start pouring through Parish records and Estate papers from one county but not for ten.

Sometimes a tombstone will give a clue as will a death certificate. Slylvain's death record states that he was born in Tignish. I wonder what Michael's indicates, if anything?

According to the cenus for Gloucester County, NB available at the National Archives, Michael Aylward was listed in 1861, but he is not in the 1871 census. His wife Elisabeth is not listed in the 1881 census. Steve McDaid

Thanks Steve. Maybe I will try and track down Michael's death and hope for the best.

By the way, there were McDaids in Derry in the 17th century. Yours?
