NINA S. STRIGHT (CLARKE) b. Crapaud, PEI 12AUG1878, d. 1905, m.? JOHN STRIGHT (b. PEI).

I guess that the S. in her name stands for Stright as, when her father, William Stright, died 19JUN1879 age 42 years, her mother, Isabella Sophia Clark, m. 2nd 20SEP1904 her cousin, Ephraim Clark (Clarke), and Nina may have taken her step-father’s surname. See:
http://www.islandregister.com/gamble1.html
In the birth record of her son, Heath
http://archives.gnb.ca/Search/VISSE/141A1b.aspx?culture=en-C...
http://archives.gnb.ca/Search/VISSE/141B7.aspx?culture=en-CA...
she was Nina Clarke. However, I see no certain evidence that she ever was a Clark/Clarke (except for that birth record and except that it was her mother’s maiden name) or that there was a John Stright.
In 1901, Nina Stright (b. 12AUG1879) was a ‘domestic’ in Botsford Parish, Westmorland Co., NB working for ‘Mathias’ and Elizabeth Treen. The 1901 cenus is often inaccurate as to birth-dates, most often being out one-year due to the method of computation. Heath Stright, her son (b. 4APR1900), was a lodger in the same household. Nina is indicated as single. Also in the household was Willie Briggs (16APR1890). Willie is given as a s/o Israel and Olive Ellen (Burns) Briggs. Heath’s father, in his birth and marriage records, is John Stright but I cannot find John in 1891 or in 1901.
In Lot 29, Queens Co., PEI, in 1891, Sophia (45) Stright had William (21) and Mabel (13) Nina (given as ‘Mina’) (11) Stright. William may have been the William Streit (10), in Lot 29 in 1881, living with James and ‘Hanah’ Inman. It is not wholly unusual for people to be listed twice in census returns, but also in Lot 29 was a widow, ‘Sofieau Straight’ (35) and her children, Leslie T. (18, Leslie Thomas Stright, b. Crapaud 28JAN1863, m. Clara Elizabeth Field), ‘Georg’ W. (16), Charles L.? (14; Charles Joseph Stright, m. 2nd 10NOV1890 Lilla Jane Clark), ‘Haray’ S.? (12), William H. (9), Edith R. (7), Mable G. (3) and Nina (1). Sophia (Clark) Stright d. 8NOV1931 age 85 years. She and her 1st husband are buried in the Tryon People’s Cemetery, Lot 29, Queens Co., PEI.
In 1911, Heath Stright (APR1900) is a servant to Mathias and Lizzy Treen. Next door, in the household of John and ‘Nancey’ (Nancy Grant) Dulenty, is Hattie Stright (SEP1904), a ‘servant’ also. Samuel Matthias Treen (b. NS 30MAR1837), m. 15MAR1865 Elizabeth H. Wall.
Nina’s brother, Leslie Thomas Stright, had an extensive family discussed at:
http://www.theleefamily.org/genealogy/histories/Anderson.pdf
“Six Botsford Anderson And Their Families”, Shirley Anderson, 13JAN2001. In particular is:

“One of the lines of business carried on in the early days was that of carriage building. Most of the men who worked at this trade were also wheelwrights and painters. Leslie's father was the earliest carriage builder to operate in Crapaud when he leased land there for a carriage factory in 1870. Leslie, the oldest son, learned the trade with his father and established his own carriage building business in Murray Corner.
“He was a boat builder as well and held a Master's certificate to navigate boats up to twenty tons. For many years he was a local Justice of the Peace. Leslie's maternal grandfather, Michael Clark (ca 1780-1862) who settled in Tryon, PEI, m. Sarah Gamble (1781-1865) in 1798, d/o James Gamble, a native of Ireland. Their son, Michael Clark, Jr. (1805-1880) m. Mary Ann Muttart (1802-1870) in 1827, d/o George & Elizabeth (Morley) Muttart, and had Isabella Sophia Clark (1846-1931).”

Interestingly, these families appear to have been descended from William Wright, Loyalist, of Bedeque, PEI, making them my rather distant cousins. Elizabeth (Wright) Anderson, with whom the family begins, would be my 1st cousin about 5 or 7 times removed.

Hi Thomas

Thank you so much for the reply, I have done some in depth research on this as Hattie would be my Grandmother and she grew up as Dulenty. My Grandmother passed away a while back and our family (Upham) only found out that she was a Stright 3-4 years ago by Heaths family. This intrigued me and I have been researching ever since. I have hit a wall with John Stright (Nina's Husband) and there is no trace of Nina after the 1901 Census as she apaprently died in 1905. I think that(Nina S.) the S. stands for her middle initial (Sophia) as was her mothers name but I am only assuming. I am trying to find out at least where she may be resting and info on Johns side......and I do certainly appreciate your reserach and comments...Cheers

I notice that Harriet Freda Dulenty gave John and Nancy (Grant) Dulenty as her parents when she married. That’s the difficulty with ‘official’ forms, is that you have to assume that the information is accurate and that the informant actually knows the facts.

I was curious as to whether the Upham side had any connections to my mother’s family, from Kings Co, but aside from some very vague connections through, for example, the Fowler’s. Anyway, the following partial ahnentafel, hastily made, may be of some use.

1. CHARLES WELLINGTON UPHAM b. Sussex Parish, Kings Co., NB 27JUL1890.

2. CHARLES WENTWORTH (T.?) J. UPHAM b. Upham Parish, Kings Co., NB 3OCT1847, d. Upham Parish, Kings Co., NB 4MAR1914, m. St. John's Reformed Episcopal Church, Sussex Parish, Kings Co., NB 13DEC1876.
Charles was of the firm, White, Upham & White. Possibly connected to Gilbert White and his brother, Samuel (Vincent Samuel or Samuel Vincent) White?
Apparently named after the Hon. Charles Wentworth Upham (1802-1875)?
3. LAURETTA (LAURETTE, LETTIE) MORRISON (‘MORISON’) b. 20NOV1851, d. Sussex Parish, Kings Co., NB 12JAN1910 age 58 years.
Other children in 1901 were ‘Lye’ (daughter, Sussex Parish 13SEP1877), ‘Herbet’ W. (30NOV1883) and Maud M. (20OCT1886).
A daughter, ‘Loretta’ Wentworth Upham, d. Sussex Parish 20AUG1880 age 3 months. Another daughter, Bessie Robert Upham, d. Sussex Parish 11MAY1886 age 1 year and 2 months.

4. JAMES WELLINGTON UPHAM b. Upham Parish, Kings Co., NB 8APR1814 d. Upham Parish, Kings Co., NB 5FEB1885 age 71 years, m. 16JAN1838.
5. PRISCILLA JANE DYKEMAN (b. 9OCT1818, d. Upham Parish, Kings Co., NB 28AUG1911.)

Now that's the interesting thing, Harriet Freda Dulenty who was my grandmother grew up with the Dulenty's, as John Stright was out of the picture sometime around 1900 and Nina and son Heath stayed with the Treens. I am sure that Nina was my grandmothers mother but unsure if John was the father and possibly could have been a Treen as my grandmother was born in 1903. I have had much success tracking my family name (Upham) back to the early 1200's. You have mentioned a possible connection with the "Fowler's". My tree shows a few connections such as:
Charity Fowler b June 16, 1791 in Upham and married Joshua Upham
Eliza Fowler b. Apr 12, 1856 and married Charles Upham
Martha Fowler b. Nov 11, 1839 and married Gilbert Dykeman Upham

Again I thank you for your time and information Thomas, much appreciated.
