I am searching for any info on Mary Sisler who married John Pipher. There appears to be several spellings of Sisler including Sisley and Cecily. Would like any info on her parents, brothers and sisters etc and their families if known, where they came from and when they originally settled in Whitchurch,On. John and Mary are my 4 times great grandparents. Thanks for any assistance,

Joan Sevigny

Ken Sisler is a family historian from Newmarket, Ontario. It may be good to contact him. In the messages below, perhaps George Sisler or James Sisler Sr. were your Mary Sisler's brothers.

There is now a Sisler Avenue located in Newmarket, Whitchurch Township, York County, Ontario, Canada. There have been Sislers living in Newmarket and the surrounding area since 1807 and possibly earlier. The street was named Sisler Avenue because our family has lived in this area for so long. These Sislers are descendants of George Sisler who appears in the 1790 Pennsylvania census as living in Northumberland County. George actually came to live in Whitchurch Township in his later years.

Margaret Willson Sisley
Birth: Dec. 14, 1786
New Brunswick, Canada
Death: May 18, 1887
Richmond Hill
Ontario, Canada

Margaret Willson, eldest daughter of Joshua Willson, and Judith Ash, was born December 14th, 1786 at Beaver Harbour (now Pennfield), New Brunswick. Her parents, Loyalists, came in 1783 to what was known at that time as Nova Scotia. Her father, Joshua Willson was originally from Piscataway in New Jersey. The Willson family moved to Whitchurch Township, York County in 1811.

It was at Whitchurch that Margaret Willson met George Sisler/Sisley. Margaret was a Quaker and George applied for, and was accepted into, that faith at the Yonge St. location, before getting approval to marry her. They were married on February 18th, 1818.

Margaret and George Sisley are known to have had seven children who survived to adulthood, four sons and three daughters. Judith 1818, Joshua 1821, Bowley 1825, Margaret 1826, Catherine 1830, Paul 1832, and Robert 1833.
Margaret survived her husband George by some 52 years and died of old age in Richmond Hill at age 100 years 5 1/2 months 4 days.

SISLER: (response)
The Quaker connection to the surname SISLER in Ontario seems to begin in 1817, when one George SISLER applies for membership in the Yonge Street Monthly Meeting, and is accepted into membership.
Shortly afterwards, on 18th of 2nd month 1818, George SISLER was married in a Quaker ceremony to Margaret WILLSON, and the record shows that he was the son of George SISLER and Margaret, who is deceased. At the time of the Separation of 1828, George SISLER, his wife Margaret and 4 children are identified with the Hicksite faction of the Pickering branch of the Yonge Street Meeting.
They were later disowned for non-attendance of meetings.
A gravestone for Margaret SISLEY (1786-1887) stands in the Presbyterian Cemetery at Richmond Hill (the surname seems to alternate between SISLER and SISLEY). There is no proof of a connection between this George SISLER and the James SISLERs Sr. and Jr. mentioned in the query, but the rare surname and the Quaker connection in both cases makes a relationship most likely.
Perhaps James SISLER Sr. and George SISLER Jr. were brothers, both children of George and Margaret SISLER.

The Sisler family first came to Whitchurch Township, York County, Ontario from Lycoming County, Muncy Township Pennsylvania. The Sislers were still living in Lycoming County in 1800 according to a tax record. The first record we have of the Sislers in Whitchurch Township is an Upper Canada land petition from George Sisler (Junior) where he said he arrived in York County in 1807. However, I was able to find John Pipher and his wife Mary (Sisler) Pipher in the 1871 census in York County. She would have been born about 1806 in Ontario according to this census record. If she was born in York County, this would push back one year when the Sislers arrived in York County.
I cannot conclusively say who Mary Sisler's parents are. My best guess is her parents were George Sisler (Senior) and Margaret Sisler (her maiden name is unknown). This would make Mary the sister of James Sisler (Senior) and George Sisler (Junior). There were also Lewis and Houston Sisler who I believe were siblings of Mary,James and George. Lewis ended up living in Erie County, New York where he died. Houston moved to Barry County, Michigan where he died.
I do remember finding a record of Mary Sisler many years ago but I don't remember what the record was.
I still live in Newmarket in the area or original settlement. There are still Sislers who live in York County. I live a few miles from where John and Mary (Sisler) Pipher are buried.
Thank-you for the information. I did not know Mary Sisler had married John Pipher and where they are buried.
My gggg grandfather was James Sisler Senior.
