That's the family! Elisabeth Bowman who married Abraham DeForest was the daughter of my 6 gr grandfather, Jacob Bowman UEL. Both Abraham and his father Simon were UEL. Abraham (wife Elisabeth Bowman) of Stamford twp and Toronto was in the Kings Royal Regiment of NY. I would be very interesting in learning more about the DeForest family.

Dear Joanna
My branch of the family goes back to 1007. If you and I are related, even distantly, I would be more than happy to correspond.
You can reach me privately at carsoneb@netscape.ca.
I don't know any stories of the deForests and you mentioning they were UEL is very important.
Please send me an email to my home email address. I look forward to corresponding with you.
Wendy

I can find Philip Deforest and wife Elizabeth (Skinner) in the 1861 census Beverly twp., Wentworth Cty. Nothing in 1871 but some of the children appear to be living with relatives. The last entries I can find for Philip DeForest are in city directories (two) from 1865 to 1868 where he is shown in Beverly twp., cons. 1, lot 21f. Nothing after that not even a cemetery record.

I am researching the 5th Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812 and have found records for James and Simon Deforest, the sons of Abraham Deforest and Elizabeth Bowman. James was present at the Battle of Queenston Heights in 1812. I would like to know more about their family histories for veteran biographies. I also have documents for the Bowmans, Skinners, and other families in the area. Please reply to fredblairorillia(at)hotmail.com by replacing (at) with @ and the subject “War of 1812” if you would like to exchange information.

This is the correct family. Part of the problem is the time period where few records are found or they are buried really deep so a lot of searching is needed off the Internet. What I do know is as follows:
1861 census
Residence: Thompson's Corners (later called Orkney) Beverly twp., Halton County.
1861 census Beverly Twp., Wentworth County, Philip 49, Eliz 34, Benjamin 14, Susan 12, Isabella 10, Joseph 9, Elsie M 7, Andrew 3, Thomas 2. They are living next to Benjamin and Emily Skinner.
There were also a large number of CAMP surnames in the same area. Code for his profession is lab- labourer (maybe he just worked for a blacksmith). Religion appears to by U Brethern?
Beverly Twp. directory 1868 - Philip DeForest Con. 1 lot 21F.

Canada, British Army and Canadian Militia Muster Rolls and Pay Lists, 1795-1850 about Philip Deforest
Name: Philip Deforest
List Date: Nov 1838
Piece Title: Walpole Volunteers, Warwick Volunteers, Watertown Guard, Whitby Independent Company, Whitby Independent Volunteers, Windsor Volunteers, 1st, 2nd, And 3rdE. York Militia, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, And 5th W. York Militia, 1st And 2nd W. York Militia
I have Susan DeForest 1848-1917 m Hiram Winney in 1870 with 3 children: Martha, George, John. Looks like Haram and Susan both died in Muskoka.
