I am looking for information on my great great grandmother, Kate Brown. From Maine census records, I have found that she was born in Canada between 1849 and 1853. My grandmother was told she was from Ontario, but doesn't know much else. I found an 1871 Canadian census record that seems to be her, living in Hamilton, Ontario as a servant. It also states that she was Irish and Wesleyan Methodist. Unfortunately, her parents are not known and are not listed on any document, which leads me to think she may have been an orphan. She married my English great great grandfather, Henry Golding (born in 1845 in England), in 1877 in Freeport, ME, in a civil ceremony (no marriage certificate, just a line documenting this in a book of records!). They had two children: Fred and Walter born in January of 1882 (my great grandfather)in Pownal, ME (can't find birth certificates on either of them and I have searched the town hall's archives!). She died in Gray, ME July 3, 1907. Her death certificate and tombstone both have the wrong dates of her birth (estimates of 1842 on death record which states she was born in Quebec, Ontario and 1863 on the tombstone!) which I am sure means my great great grandfather (who survived her and remarried) didn't know her birth date or anything about her early life!
This is so frustrating as I don't know who her parents were or how she came to Maine. I know that she was born in Canada, but wonder if her parents were Irish immigrants or Canadian? There are a lot of Browns in Canada and I have tried searching under Catherine Brown as well, but everything I have on my great great grandmother tells me that she always went by Kate, not Catherine. Not sure where to search next...any ideas?
Thanks!
