I am especially interested in this surname as located in the North Wellington county area of Ontario.
My McCurdy line married into the Clemetshaw line of Maryborough township, North Wellington county.
Please contact me if you are researching this surname.

Thanks Carol for your response to my enquiry.
Would you like to know more about the line of Wm. Clemetshaw of Easingwold, Yorkshire to Canada?
A few years ago a lady from California contacted me as she was also searching her Clemetshaw family.
Please advise.
Helen

I am a descendant of William Clemenshaw of Wellington County Ontario. I actually have 3 large portraits that were in my grandparents' house before they moved in. It was previously owned by George Stephenson and Ellen Adams. Ellen would be a granddaughter of William Clemenshaw. She actually was the 2nd wife of my 2nd great grandfather. His first wife was Rosannah Podesta, who was actually Ellen's 1st cousin.
Anyway, if you can understand that, my point is that I have no idea who these 3 portraits are of. One is an older girl, one is a young man, and one is an older woman. I'm hoping these are from the Clemenshaw family but they could be from the Stephenson family (in which we would not be directly related to). I'm going to hang them up in my new apartment because they are beautiful. Does anyone have any Clemenshaw photos that these could be compared to? It would be nice if I actually could figure out who they are, but regardless they are beautiful.
P.S. William Clemenshaw's father was Thomas. He was a gunsmith in Easingwold. There are still guns of his running around in the antique world in England. That was when their surname was Clemetshaw. Do a Google search for "Clemetshaw gun" and there are a few pictures even. Thomas's wife was Ann Driffield who comes from a long line of butchers in Easingwold. There's even a whole book on the family.

I am interested in the William Clemenshaw of Wellington County. Before settling in Maryborough Twp. would he have been the William Clemetshaw listed in the pay lists for the Fourth Glengarry Regiment of Militia in 1838 and 1839? I have not been able to confirm the birth of several of his children in Quebec and wonder if, in fact, he was living in Lancaster Twp. which is adjacent to what is now the Quebec-Ontario boundary.

I am also interested in how the family, or part of it, moved to the Moose Jaw area.

Jim.

As mentioned on the Moose Jaw board I have added those of these I did not already have to my information.

A particular interest of mine is William Clemenshaw who died in Wellington County, Ontario. From what I understand he was born in England and emigrated to Canada. From census information several of his children were born in Quebec before he came to Wellington Township. I have not been able to locate any births in Quebec but I have found a William Clemenshaw in pay lists for the militia in Lancaster, Ontario in 1838-39. Given that Glengarry County abuts the boundary with Quebec it is possible that either he lived in Quebec but joined the Glengarry Militia or given the political boundary changes it was thought he was in Quebec since the United Province of Canada was formed in 1840.

Any information about William's movements would be most helpful to me.

Jim.

Is there any evidence to indicate where the Clemenshaws of Maryborough, Wellington Co. Ontario moved from? I have a possibility in Glengarry County but the family may also have spent time in Stoke Twp. Richmond County, QUebec although I have yet to confirm this.
