During the brief American occupation of Cooks Mills, their command centre could well have been at Jesse Yokom's house. It was across the road from the mill, on the south side of Lyon's Creek.

The American commander's report made a point of saying no public or private property was destroyed...with the exception of wheat found in the mill. The Yankees didn't want to repeat their previous mistakes of burning York, Newark and St Davids - which caused British retaliations at Youngstown, Lewiston, Buffalo and Washington D.C.

Memories of "burning" had to have their genesis in the fact the American soldiers tore down and burned rail fences in Cooks Mills. It was late October. The weather was cold and wet, and the soldiers needed fuel to cook their meals.

And, yes, Edna Bender Learn is buried in Lundy's Lane Cemetery, Niagara Falls, Ont. That is a popular cemetery for the Benders. Her stone is worn but legible. So it appears that Edna Bender, daughter of John Bender and Mary Marr, was the first wife of Peter Learn. Can't read the dates from the pic.

http://www.niagarafalls.ca/city-hall/municipal-works/cemeter...

We're downsizing and must dispose of considerable research information to make room for living space! Serious researchers with space and time are hard to find. Those with family connections are even more scarce! Lots of "Goodies" to keep you out of mischief for years!
and I would love to correspond with you and hear more about the Blackstone Lake families!
I was only an 8th grader when my family visited Blackstone Lake which was many years ago. My parents and my father's cousin were with me. Think my parents stayed at the Lodge but my father's cousin and I stayed in the little boat house made into a cabin. Outside was a big black rock that I remember sitting on and fishing.. The water there was shallow so we could wade out .. We visited several relatives there in the area and I really can't remember who they were. Certainly wish my father were still with us so *I could get more detail.
I think my Aunt Olive Keener use to write to one of the relatives ... was there a Grace maybe?
My email here is kurila613@roadrunner.com and would like to know more about the Dunbar/ Jennings family .. Lucinda was my grandmother, Mary Alice Olive Wright's aunt. I have minutes of family reunions where the group wrote letters to Lucinda. I have done some research on the Dunbar family , perhaps we could share info.
Mary Wright Kurila

Hi all
I am a descendant of Thaddeus UEL Davis through son Hall, brother to Loyal and Thaddeus jr. who all served in the militia during the war of 1812. At this time I am trying to track down some documentation that will confirm connection of Hall Davis (wife Lucinda) with his/their own son Noah Davis (b:abt 1813) or other children (Noah's wife Eliza Ann Darling). If anyone can give me a heads up it would be much appreciated!
Thanks, Dawn (can be contacted directly at dawn9909@gmail)

Hello

I think we are, indeed, talking about different Coulter families, yours being from the Innisfil region and mine from Bertie township area and Thorold township, both in present day Welland county, Ontario; that the family names are identical is a striking co-incidence, but only that.
The situation I indicated in my first post is certain and doesn't really pertain to the following postings. The only mistake I made there was the name Mary nee Pew should be Mary nee Lampman.
I could agree that there might be some relationship between all these Coulters. Even in Thorold I can see two different Coulter families inter-marrying with the same families mentioned.
To confound the problem a brother of George Kerr mentioned as a possible third husband of Mary Johnson also had a mother-in-law by the name Catharine Coulter, resident in Buffalo,New York.
Thanks alot for the info you supplied. I appreciate all data, even if it only elminates possibilies.

Mike Carr

Nope, Uncle Jim married Sarah Jane dau. of his Uncle Hugh Coulter. Alexander Jr., James, and David were sons of Alexander Watson Sr. and Margaret Coulter. Not sure if Alexander Sr. was brother, or nephew, of Mary Watson the mother of Hugh Coulter.

Hi Mike,

Tim Taylor here. Susan Coulter is the daughter of James Coulter and Mary Johnson (maiden name, not married name) Coulter. Susan was most likely given the mother's maiden name as her middle name, hence Susan Johnson Coulter. There were several Coulter families all descended and related that had similar names of children so I would be careful when saying that your Susan dau. of James and Mary is the same as the dau. of John and Mary and would suggest looking further. My gr.x2 Uncle, James Watson, married a Sarah Coulter and If I remember correctly she was a dau. of an Andrew Coulter - have to go back and check that part myself.

Guess I'll start by saying hello cousin.

I descend from the Watson/Coulter line through Alexander Watson. My grandmother was Mary Marguerite Watson dau. of Alexander Watson of Innisfil Ontario. He and his brother James (m. Sarah Coulter) were in the QOR Toronto Battalion during the Finnian Invasion, afterwards he immigrated to Texas where he was a Texas Ranger before marrying and moving to Idaho.

Is there anything you could recommend. Searching Irish records is so difficult unless you have some place name where they might have lived. Although my mom has passed she would have loved the potential priest connection.

1871 census Thorold Welland gives deaths that occured during the previous year.

Dennis McCarthy, aged 70, stonecutter, Catholic, born Ireland, died November [1870]of heart disease.

On their marriage rego it gives Anthony's occupation as stonecutter so this may be Mary's father.

1871 census Thorold Welland
McCARTHY
Margaret, 70, Ireland, Catholic
William, 30, USA, stonecutter
Catharine, 24, Ontario
Maggie, 20, Ontario
No relationships are given on this census.

Don't see them on the 1861 census in the area. Maybe they were in the US?
Don't see any death registration for Dennis McCarthy but registration didn't begin until 1869 and was somewhat sporadic for awhile after that.

None of the children of Anthony and Margaret seem to have had their births registered.

The only Kilcullen I can find on Welland census is a James Kilcullen, 34, b Ireland, priest.
I cannot find anything on them either.

I am looking for more information on the parents of Anthony Kilcullen and Magraret Mccarthy. Anthony's parents are listed as Michael and Mary nee Hanley Kilcullen and Margaret's parents are listed as Denis McCarthy and Mary nee Powers Mccarthy. I have the marriage record but cant locate any more information on them. Anthony and Margaret end up in Birmingham Alabama. The 1900 census shows some of their children being born in Eng Canada. However by 1900 both have passed away and their uncle William McCarthy is living with them.

By 1910 the family group has scattered with several of the youngest boys ending up in the care of The Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Mobile Al.

I stopped in at the library today and was able to find this obituary for you:

FORMER RESIDENT DEAD

Wm. H. Carter, formerly of Port Colborne, passed away at Grand Forks, Dakota,on Friday morning last at an advanced age. He was born in New Jersey, and was in the 81st year of his age. For many years he lived in Port Dalhousie and operated tow-horses on the canal. Later he moved to Port Colborne and lived here about ten years. He built the Imperial Bank building and was one of the most prominent and highly esteemed citizens of the village. In 1881 he moved to Grand Forks, where he has since been located. He was a brother of the late L.G. Carter and C.H. Carter, and was the last surviving member of his generation. He is survived by two sons, Wm. G. Carter of New Rockford, Dakota, and Leroy H. Carter of Grand Forks. Many old friends in these parts will regret to hear of his death.

I would have tried for more but ran out of time on the parking meter.

By the way Port Dalhousie is now part of the city of St. Catharines at the north/Lake Ontario end of the Welland Canal and Port Colborne is at the south/Lake Erie end.

Here is a census link for you:
1871 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M47G-2DY

Sharon

I have just found a site (see first link below) with digital photos of all the Carter stones in Overholt Cemetery, Port Colborne. Most, if not all, of the names on the stones are those of your ancestors.

The stone for the patriarch Levi appears to be a replacement stone.

The most well known of the group in their time were brothers Charles H. and Lewis G., and Charles' son Dewitt, the first mayor of Port Colborne.

There is no photo of Lewis' stone but according to Ontario Genealogical Society website info (see second link), he is buried in this cemetery.

There are photos of the stones of Charles and Lewis's siblings but you have to go to the "S" page for sister Hannah who married David Steele.

Links:
1. http://geneofun.on.ca/cems/ON/ONWEL14312

Click on “C”.

2. http://ogs.andornot.com/CemeteryIndex.aspx

In the search box type in last name “Carter” and cemetery name “Overholt”.

Also, check out these historic Carter homes:

1.
I have no connection to the Carter family but it is a well-known and well-documented family in Port Colborne and there is a lot of info online if you know where to look.

According to one account 3 Carter brothers (Benjamin, Daniel, and James) came from England to America circa 1760.

Benjamin had a son William Carter (born circa 1784). It is this William's son Levi that ended up in Canada.

It seems that Levi Carter (born circa 1792 in New Jersey, USA) and wife Hannah Green left for Ontario, Canada at some point with their family settling in Port Colborne. One text says that they had 11 children but I have only been able to find the names of 8: Mary E. (born c. 1818), William, Charles H. (c .1821) Hannah (c. 1826), Lewis G. (c .1828), the Rev. Levi (c.1832), Adeline /Addie S. (c. 1834), and Isabella (c. 1837)

All of the above except William are buried in Overholt Cemetery in Port Colborne.

I can find online info on all of these children of Levi except William from whom it would seem that you descend. Perhaps father and son left for the Dakotas together and that is why there remains little information here about these two.

Your line then IF the online info is correct is: Benjamin > William > Levi > William > William Green Carter (your great-grandfather) > your grandfather or grandmother > your father or mother > you.

Other than the internet the best source of Carter information is the Port Colborne Museum. Here is the contact information:

Director/Curator
Stephanie Powell Baswick
museum@portcolborne.ca
280 King Street, Box 572
Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada L3K 5X8
Tel.: 905-834-7604
Fax: 905-834-6198

Hopefully the curator may have more information on William, son of Levi.

Good luck in your search.

Sharon
Welland, Ontario
Richardson/Filer Family, Niagara Falls.

I am researching my Great Aunts family. Her name was Elizabeth Lightfoot Scott, b 1894, d 1989. She was born in Poplar London & married William Pearson Richardson, a Canadian serviceman after WW1. They settled in Niagara Falls living in Maple St. They had three sons, Desmond Gerald b 1920 and twins John & Edward, b 1925. Desmond was killed during WW2 in 1943. Father William died in 1935. I believe John & Edward died in the 1990's. Elizabeth (Aunty Betty as she was referred to in the family), remarried Walter Filer, who died in 1966.
Does anyone know anything of this family? It would be wonderful to contact any of John or Edward's decendents.
Thank you,
Georgina Southall, England.

It would help to narrow things down if you gave more information:

- full given name (What do the initials "A" & "L" stand for?)

- birth date, if known

- the full name of the sister (given and married name if known)

- his wife's full name including maiden name, if he married

- exactly where this gentleman emigrated from: e.g. Dundee, Angus, Scotland

- where in Welland County did the sister live

- their parents' names

- his occupation

If I were you, I'd start all over and post a new query giving what info you want and what you already know.

It would be best also to compose a new subject line, for example:

Andrew Lloyd Rose & sister Janet Rose Smith, born Scotland, lived in Niagara Falls: looking for descendants

Good luck,

Sharon
Welland, Ontario
