Surnames: Corbit, Corbet, Corbett, Smith, Johnston, DeGrummond
I am looking for information of the CORBIT family. They lived in Welland in the early 1800's a bit before and after. Their daughter, my GGGGGrandmother was named Julianna(Julia Ann) Corbit and was born in Welland, Lundy's Lane, Ontario March 22, 1804. This information from her Death Certificate in Michigan. She married in Niagara area in 1824 to a US 1812 veteran - DeGrummond (son of DeGrummond and Johnston). They had their first son in Black Rock, then moved to what was to become Michigan and settled for a few years in Detroit.

Also, three of their offspring have the following middle names: Johnston, Corbit, and Smith. Almost certainly parents' surnames (Johnston and Corbit are obviously). So, wonder if Julia Corbit's mother's maiden was Smith? If so, a Corbet/Corbit/Corbett marriage to a Smith in the 1790s would be interesting...

Whoa! I think I may have hit the jackpot. I too am related to Julia Corbit De Grummond through my great grandmother. Let's see, Julia would be my 4 or 5 x's great grandmother. I lived in the suburbs of Detroit and have the hand written family legend that was kept by Harriet Jane Atkinson Whitesell. I know William and Julia De Grummond lived in Detroit but I can't find her death certificate nor the marriage certificate. Boy, would I love to talk with you!! Let's email and then maybe we can get on the phone some day.
