On the 1851/52 census page of Woolwich with Andreas Brehler and family, German Otterbein was married to Maria Oldenwald.
There are 3 RC families on the page and all are related in one way or another.

Raphael Brehler gets in the St. Clements {Wellesley Township} records.
I have the birth of Albert and the death of John to Raphael and Oldenwald.
I forget the dates..late 1850's-early 1860's.

The marriage record you found for Raphael Brehler and Maria Eva Oldenwald brought tears to my eyes, Chris. I just showed it to my 94 year old mother, who could not believe that she was looking at the marriage record of her great grandparents at long last. Thank you so very much,

Lisa

Thank you again, Chris. I can help you regarding Raphael's daughter, Catharine Brehler. She was apparently born in Woolwich Twp around 12 Dec 1858 (date calculated from death record).
She married John "Henry" Baker (name spelled Boecker in marriage record) 20 Feb 1882 in Formosa, Bruce County. They had as many as ten children before Catharine died 26 Jun 1896 in Walkerton at age 37. Catharine and John Henry were my great-grandparents.

Henry was another one of those Germans with surname spelling issues. He was b. 2 Jun 1861 in Wellesley Tp. to Adam Backer and Lizzy Vogel (mother's name as it appeared on his marriage record). Those of us researching Adam have seen children attributed to him by wife Catharine Brogill (Adam b. 13 Oct 1862 Berlin, Waterloo, who m. Catherine Gaetz, another Waterloo local, and Joseph abt 1857 St. Clements, who m. Eliz. Boegel of Wellesley Twp. Brogill is similar sounding to Vogel (also written as Fogel) that some believe Catharine and Elizabeth are one and the same wife. There are nine children, including our John Henry, attributed to Adam and wife Vogel/Fogel that I have found so far. No record(s) unfortunately to sort out whom Adam married.

John Adam Brehler died in 1950; his wife Magdalena "Lena" Schneider, died in 1940, according to their gravestone in Mount Hope Cemetery on the Kitchener side. I met briefly with a third cousin over a week ago, who is their descendent, and who has a tremendous knowledge of this line, if you are interested. However, she doesn't have their exact dates of death (who would?). John and Lena were residing at 20 Adelaide St. in Kitchener in 1940; in 1949, it looks like John was living in the Breslau area with his two sons.

Now we know why they were all stuffed into the same one-storey log home in the 1852 Census--Germanus' wife was sister to Maria Eva, Raphael's wife. This just cracked a DNA mystery: my mother and another woman are 4th cousins, but we couldn't figure out the link...until now. Thank you!!

Ah - another child for this couple! Are these three births recorded in the same church in Waterloo County, Chris?
Others you may spy are:
1. John Henry - b. 2 Jun 1861 St. Clements
2. Adam - b. 13 Oct 1862 Berlin
3. Anthony - b. 19 Nov 1863
4. Catharine - b. 23 Sep 1865 Cranbrook
5. Peter - b. 9 Feb 1868 Grey Twp
6. George - 7 Jan 1870
7. Elizabeth - 22 Apr 1872
8. John - Abt 1876

One you should NOT expect to find, but who may yield a clue about the family, is
9. John Paul Becker - according to various Canadian census records, he was born in Alsace 13 Oct 1850, arrived in Canada the same year, and became naturalized in 1860. In one of these records, he indicates his father was also born in Alsace. Are there any local books recording those from Alsace who settled in Waterloo Region, or any records of naturalization for that early time period? Just a thought...and thank you for your amazing clues.

I found the marriage of John Adam Becker to Elizabeth Vogel. They were married Aug 1st, 1852 in St. Agatha. He was the son of Joanis {John} Becker and Katharine Mathes {Mathis} from Hessen, Germany and she was the daughter of George Vogel and Margaret Hasenci from Hesse. Witnesses were Nicholas Becker and Andreas Preller {Brehler}.,.......This is what I have on Nicholas Becker, as part of my future book...
Chris.......
Nicholas Becker {about 1818}, mason, son of John Becker and Catharine Mathis of Middelrodern, Hessen, Germany married Catharine Brehler {about 1825}, daughter of Andreas Brehler and Maria Eva Konig, of Hessen, Germany in 1848 in St. Agatha. This couple’s children include Sylvia? {about 1849} and John { 1850}.
