Canadian Passenger Lists
Sailed from Greenock 26 March 1927, arrived Saint John 3 Apr 1927 on SS Montcalm.

David Hugh Porter, b Crosshill by Maybele Scotland, age 21, gardener, fruit farming, proceeding under auspices of Ont. Govt. to Toronto Ont, contact: Mother: Mrs Helen Porter, Glenmore, Crosshill by Maybole.

1901 Scottish census
Maybole, Ayrshire

PORTER
Helen H E, 57, b Ireland
George, 63, b Galston Ayrshire, minister of parish church
Agnes Pollock, 39, servant

They are too old to be David Hugh's parents.
Maybe they are grandparents?

1901 census has the following Porters born and living in Crosshill Ayshire

Francis, 41, stonemason
Martha, 45
Maggie, 16, dressmaker
Albert, 14, apprentice millwright
Jane, 12, scholar
Mary,10
Annie, 8
Emily, 6
Sarah, 4
Francis, 1

Unfortunately 1911 census is not on line. You can likely order it from your nearest LDS History Centre or with any luck, they may already have it in.

If you can find out what date they were married, you can order their marriage registration from Ontario Stats in Thunder Bay for a fee. It would give you his parent's names.
Marriages are only released to 1926 so you have to prove you are a direct descendent.

Surnames: Porter/McCulloch/Butter/Pratt
Hi Again,
The friend that I am doing research for is Royston Goodman and his mother was a McCulloch and her mother was a Pratt.
I do not have anything on David Hugh Porter but way back in
1796 Collace I have an Isabell Porter who then married Robert Butter and through their children then married into the Pratt family. Maybe this is the same branch of the Porters.
I do not want to give out my e mail address here but perhaps you can contact me through JOANKIRK43 and we can compare research.

Regards
Joan Kirk

Hi James,

Thank you so much for the response back. I am hoping you will be able to help me with some information. This is what I have on my family group sheet. I have Margaret Rita McCulloch born on 29 Jun 1908, married David Hugh Porter on 30 Aug. 1939 in Ayrshire and had two children George Francis Porter born 26 Nov. 1929 and James McCulloch Porter born 10 Feb, 1939. I have no information on where George and James were born, or marriage/spouse info and also their children. If you could help with this I would appreciate it. I am doing my family tree from the descendants of Elizabeth Mooney...which is from Ann and Felix McCulloch which is how you ended up in my family tree.

Hello,

My nana Jean Burns (Jean Gray) was best friends with Rita Porter. My nana was born in 1903 and died 1996. I took my nana up to Kirkmichael (Mrs Porter was living in Kirkmichael)to see Mrs. Porter when they were in their late 80's. I will ask around and see if I can get any more info for you. I live in America but we still have the house where my nana lived in Crosshill and I visit yearly. Will see what I can find out for you and post if I have any update. I know its several years since your last post but I just saw this online. (my maiden name is McKie)

Hello Loreena,

I am also doing genealogy in preparation for a trip to Scotland. My grandmother, Jane (also known as Jean) Porter was from Crosshill, Scotland. Her parents were George Francis Porter and Helen Bell Porter. Samuel and Agnes Bell were her grandparents. Jane married Hugh Auld from Ayr. Jane and Hugh met in Ontario, Canada. They married and lived in Farmington, Michigan. They retired to Dunedin, Florida. Both are now deceased. My family and I are visiting Scotland in June. We must be related. Any thoughts on how to make contact with relatives in Scotland?

Hi James,

Thank you for your message. I posted another one a while back ( I have Margaret Rita McCulloch born on 29 Jun 1908, married David Hugh Porter on 30 Aug. 1939 in Ayrshire and had two children George Francis Porter born 26 Nov. 1929 and James McCulloch Porter born 10 Feb, 1939. I have no information on where George and James were born, or marriage/spouse info and also their children.) I am not sure if this is extra info??? We could very well be related but let me know if you have any other info to fill in here....What happened to James...George's brother??
As for how to contact relatives in Scotland, I am not sure how to go about that. Maybe do some geneology postings asking if anyone knows these people and how to get in contact with them. i live in Canada but my gg grandmother came from glasgow Scotland. Good luck with your geneology and contacts......hope to hear back from you
