I've been looking for my father off and on since 1978, but have to work around the fact that my birth mother doesn't seem inclined to discuss anything connected to him.
I found 2 first cousins on my mother's side last year, purely by accident when one of them responded to a query I made 3 or 4 years ago asking about my grandmother's obituary.
In the late 1990's or early 2000's, my mother gave me what I believe was a partial name - James Cummings. My husband feels strongly that she was trying to throw me off so I wouldn't find anything, and he is firmly of the belief that she refuses to see me because I look like my father.
My cousin says that my mother is a nice woman who wouldn't hurt a fly, but can be immovably silent about things she doesn't want to discuss. She's now 89 and in very poor health. She has heart problems. My cousin says that she has experienced a lot of sadness in her life, and even today he says occasionally the light doesn't shine as brightly in her eyes as it should.
On the basis of a very scant description that I put on the Internet, and on the basis of the name James Cummings, Tracey found me last week and we started comparing notes. It looks promising and I'm hoping it will pan out. It would be nice to find siblings and other relatives.
For Tracey, I've taken a chance and sent my mother another letter with photos of my children, asking if she remembers anything she hasn't told me, and if the name Lennox ever came up while she knew my father. I told her my cousins both know about me, which may have been a stopping point, and asked certain specific questions to see if she will tell me anything new.
Question 1 - what if this James Cummings person really was Robert James Cummings Lennox, but had already adopted the change of identity so that my mother only knew him by the name she gave me?
Question 2 - I found a 1936 marriage notation in the LDS Family Search website on a Robert James Lennox to a woman in Simcoe, Ontario. I think her name was Audrey C Mason. Have you ever run across this, and if so, can it be checked out with the privacy laws dictating everything?
