How To Access Speaker Archives Now?

I used to visit www.paperofrecord.com to access the Temiskaming Speaker archives. I hadn't been there for a while and decided to stop in today. Imagine my surprise when I got re-routed to Google News Archive Search. Apparently Google has bought out Paper of Record. What does this mean for anyone wanting to search the Speaker archives now. Does anyone know?

You're not the only one who was surprised! I had accessed Paper of Record this morning! I am very annoyed that neither company advised the registered users that Google had acquired the Paper of Record archives (which apparently happened December 2, 2008).

It is my understanding that the Paper of Record archives will be added to the growing Google collection and that it will remain free. When this will happen is uncertain. I have sent in a question on the matter to Google and I hope for a quick reply ...... and that soon the Speaker archive will be accessible again.

My feeling exactly. How difficult would it have been for them to send a form letter to all registered users giving them the "heads up"?
I sent an email to Google too. If I get a reply I'll post it.

Hopefully it's like you said and it will just take time to get the pages uploaded. As of now, any search I've tried on the Google Archive site to find the Temiskaming Speaker yields nothing at all. I just hope that when and if the pages finally appear, they won't be too difficult to search through. Paper of Record was no picnic, but at least I was used to it.

I guess it's true...the only thing constant is change.

Thank you for your reply.

Just received this reply from the Google News Archive Search Team:

"Hello,

As you may already know, Google acquired paperofrecord.com recently. We are currently working on the most effective way to search and browse this valuable content. We're doing our best to find a solution to include as much of the acquired content as possible. This takes time, and we appreciate your patience. We're constantly making improvements to ensure the best user experience.

In the interim, if you are looking for a specific source in a particular date range, use Google News advanced archive search at http://news.google.com/archivesearch/advanced_search

You can also find search tips at http://news.google.com/archivesearch/refinesearch.html

We appreciate your patience as we work to improve Google News archive search.

Sincerely,

The News Archive Search Team"

I'm not sure I like the phrase "we're doing our best to find a solution to include as much of the acquired content as possible". As much as possible? Sounds like the information might end up being incomplete at best, compared to what we were used to through the Paper of Record site. Disappointing turn of events.

Paper of Record content on Google News Archive Search

Following much frustration Google have finally posted a clarification of the situation regarding the content the company purchased from Paper of Record (Cold North Wind). The good news is that much of the content is available through Google news archive search. Some of the material requires further processing, promised in the next three months. The bad news is that some titles, including the Sporting News, Temiskaming Speaker and The Perth Courier, will not be coming to Google.
So, does this mean the archives of the Speaker and the other two are gone forever.
