Cobalt, ON, McKenzie family, burial
MY name is Evelyn (Boyd) Hitchcock, and I am looking for info on a McKenzie family who lived and died in Cobalt, ON. John/Cobalt Jack A. McKenzie and his wife, Lydia Hardy(b. 1868), lived in the Chelmsford area of Ontario in 1901. But they were in Herkimer County, NY, when her mother, Ann Hardy, died in 1903 in Ottawa, ON. However, shortly after that they moved back to northern Ontario. I have info from the "Montreal Star" showing that this "Cobalt Jack" McKenzie died in Cobalt, ON, on May 15, 1936(1862-1936)and had been a resident of the area for 30 yrs. I would assume that he was buried in that area, but I have not been able to find anything about him nor his wife, Lydia, in any of the cemeteries in that area. Lydia died sometime after 1942 and not sure where she died. I am related to both of these cousins as these McKenzies and Hardys are in my ancestry. So my question is "Does anyone know where these folks are buried?" I cannot find them. (Great Uncle Augustus McKenzie died up there in 1921 and is buried in the Silverland Cemetery.) I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows anything about this family. They had five children born in the late 1800's in ON and/or PQ. Evelyn Hitchcock

Re: Cobalt, ON, McKenzie family, burial
Hi Evelyn, I tried to do some research, cannot find an obit or death notice for Lydia Hardy MacKenzie. I did find an obit for John MacKenzie though, and I suspect that the Montreal Star may actually be in error.
John MacKenzie Cobalt – Resident of Cobalt for a generation. John MacKenzie, whose grandfather fought under Wellington at Waterloo, died on Friday morning at his home here after a brief illness. Mr. MacKenzie, who was in his 75th year, came to Cobalt in its earlier days and for 20 years he was an employee of the Northern Ontario Power Company. In earlier life, he had engaged in lumbering and other occupations, and at different times had lived at Waubaushene, Creighton Mines, Chelmsford and Biscostasing. Mr. MacKenzie was born at Gore of Lochaber, on the Quebec side of the Ottawa river. His parents were the late Donald MacKenzie and his wife Marjorie Cameron, who as children had crossed the Atlantic on the same sailing ship when their parents left Scotland for Canada. Last September, Mr. and Mrs. MacKenzie celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, they having been married at Clarence, Ont. on Sept. 2, 1898. Surviving are the widow, formerly Lydia Hardy, who also lived in early life in the Ottawa Valley, four sons, Lorne and Lester, of Kirkland Lake, Russell of Jordan, Ont., and Clifford, at home, and three daughters, Mrs. Bernard Kelly, of Liverpool, N.S., and Mrs. T. Whitbread and Mrs. A.P. Gribbons, both in Cobalt. There are nine grandchildren. The funeral was held from the United Church on Sunday to Haileybury cemetery, Rev. E. Gilmour Smith officiating. Thursday, May 20, 1937 (May 14, 1937 would have been the Friday)
Also note a death notice for Lydia's brother Fred TWICE BEREAVED Cobalt – Bereaved by the death of her husband less than three weeks ago, Mrs. Lydia MacKenzie, for many years a resident of Cobalt, has learned of the passing of her youngest brother, Fred Hardy, in Toronto last week. The late Mr. Hardy died in Christie Street Hospital and the funeral was held in the city. A native of the Ottawa River Valley, Mr. Hardy at one time worked in Cobalt, but in later years had made his home in Toronto. He served with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces during the World War, of which he was a casualty, and his death was due in part measure to his service overseas. Mr. Hardy was a widower, his wife having died some years ago. There is no immediate family. Temiskaming Speaker, June 3 1937
There is also a birth for one daughter Gladys Irene MacKenzie b. June 24 1901 however, I don't know which one of the daughters it would be.
I have no connection to this family. Laurie Gladys Irene MacKenzie b. June 24 1901

Re: Cobalt, ON, McKenzie family, burial
Thank you so very much for all the "goodie" info on this MacKenzie family - marriages, tombstones, etc. The Gibbons family is not mine, I am quite sure, but thanks for trying that for me - Mary was not the name of one of John & Lydia's daughters. Again, thank you very much. Evelyn Hitchcock

Re: Cobalt, ON, McKenzie family, burial
Lydia (Hardy) and John MacKenzie were my grandparents. My Mother was their youngest child - Ruby Leah MacKenzie who was born in 1910 in Cobalt. Lydia and John are buried in Haileybury, Ontario along with one of their daughters (my aunt). Lydia passed away in Lindsay, Ontario around 1955. Their children have all passed, but many of their grandchildren still survive and live in various parts of Canada.

Re: Cobalt, ON, McKenzie family, burial
Hi Patricia!
Do you have any information you have on John and Lydia's eldest son (Russell) and his family. Russell and his wife, Esther, were my great-grandparents. My grandmother, your cousin, has long passed, but I've always been curious about the lack of records we've been able to find surrounding her birth. And as a very coincidental, but strangely funny twist, I just found out through my search that Etta (or Ella) McKenzie married Thomas Albert Whitbread, and my grandmother Ethel McKenzie (I'm assuming named after Russell's late sister) married Albert Whitbread--so it has been very confusing looking up records with these name overlaps! haha.
Please do contact me if you have any information though. Thank you! Leanne

Re: Cobalt, ON, McKenzie family, burial
Hi Leanne, Yes, I did know them. Ethel's daughter and her husband came to visit some years ago. She was married to a lovely man. I have many pictures of George the other son. He married a full blooded Native American and had twins. I didn't know him very well. I met him as a small child. Ester, Russell's wife was very uncomfortable about her Native heritage and actually refused to have her picture taken. Russell apparently married her off the Reserve. He was a 'rag & bones' man. I think that's what you call that profession. apparently, he made a very good living at it. If memory serves me right, Russell is buried with my grandparents. I have not seen my 2nd cousin in many years, but maybe our other cousin Patsy ( Glady's daughter) would know more about them. I was given all of the family history. I have pictures and dates. We should talk. I know Patsy, my cousin would enjoy it very much. she might know more than I because she's much older than me. her daughters are my age. My mother, Ruby, was born in 1910 and so was the youngest and everyone was so much older than her. the pictures show Russell as a much older man and my Mother is young child. our second cousins became our first cousins. please get hold of me and I can provide you with the info.
