Look Ups Great Fire of 1922
I have in my possession a book titled "The Great Fire of 1922". On October 4th, 1922, one of the ten worst disasters in Canadian history occurred in the District of Temiskaming. This fire affected 18 townships in the District and covered an area of 650 square miles. In total, 6,000 people were left homeless and 43 people perished. If you had relatives/ancestors living in the area in 1922, it is possible that they are mentioned in this book. I am willing to do a free lookup for anyone who might be interested. Please give first and last names if possible.
Sincerely Bonnie

Hi Maureen, As you know, the Great Fire took place on October 4th, 1922. The following is a write-up in the book from an article dated November 16, 1922 that appeared in the New Liskeard Speaker and Temiskaming News Letter titled "Growing Haileybury" and it mentions George Smith. It reads as follows:
"Are we downhearted? NO! Mr. F.R. Gibson is making splendid headway with his three-story, 40 feet x 40 feet block on Ferguson Avenue. On the same Avenue, Mr. Dan Murray, Town Clerk, is erecting two stores, 40 feet x 32 feet. Contractor Mr. J. Vian has on hand the erection of a dwelling house for Mr. Murray and another dwelling hourse for Mr. Ruttan, and still another for Capt. Burnes. The new brick block for the Union Bank is fast approaching completion, and will soon be occupied.
Norfolk and Rochester have the frame and their hardware store erected on the site of the former store at the corner of Main Street and Ferguson Avenue. We believe the building is 24 feet x 46 feet, but are not quite certain. The firm is now doing business in a small temporary building at the reas of their lot.
Mr. Jory's new store is being built on Ferguson Avenue. Mr. Jory bought a spendid lot, 50 feet x 100 feet, and has let the contract for building his store, 25 feet x 50 feet, to Messrs. Hill-Clark-Frances, New Liskeard, which is a guarantee that he will get what he expects to get --first class work.
Mr. George Smith, who had a comfortable home in the area untouched by the fire, has taken a smaller place in Cobalt and given up his Haileybury home to a family which was in need of larger accomodation. This is but another instance of Mr. Smith's unselfishness".
Maureen, the story continues on about other buildings in and around the area. Is this the George Smith you were interested in? I will check out the other names you gave me and if I find them, do a right up this this one.
Sincerely Bonnie

Maureen, Of the names that you gave me, I can only find George Smith. They do mention a Mrs. J. Burke and a William Burke though. Let me know if you would like to me check any other names.
