North Cumberland Str or Cumberland Str North

Surnames: Olson, Gallant
My great grandfather Olof Olson built a house at 321 N Cumberland Street which was lived in by my grandfather Wilfred Gallant and family (the house is no longer there, replaced by a sad commercial strip) but I've seen the street name spelled N Cumberland Str and Cumberland Str N. There doesn't seem to be any predominance one way or the other. Does anyone in Thunder Bay (nee Port Arthur) know the which side the North is supposed to go on?

Thanks for your help,

Bill Chalk

Hello Bill, I live in Thunder Bay and have just been researching this exact address. Picture is: 1934 Pavement on Cumberland Street, Port Arthur, Ontario. Notes: Patron Comment: This is a picture of Cumberland Street North in Port Arthur, Ontario in 1934. The cross-street visible just ahead is Egan Street and just beyond it on the right, the house with the glassed-in porch is number 321, built by Olaf G. Olson between 1904 and 1908. It was lived in by the Gallant family from 1910 to probably the late 1940's. Next to it is number 323 which housed a number of Swedish immigrants in its early years. Hope you can access the links. Please let me know if I can be of further help.

Hello Bill, I was thinking after we didn't really answer the question about the Str question. St or Str stands for street. Adding North prior to the street was common earlier but Canada Post changed the mailing standards to direction to follow the street name that's all the variation. Some will still use the old naming variation some use the new.

As to Rob Cipone post his Great Grandfather was Ralph Ciponi who operated a barber shop and store on the corner of Egan and Cumberland St between the 1920sto sometime in the 60s. Will be interesting to see where this goes.

Do you happen to know any of the last names of the Swedish immigrants at 323 Cumberland? I'm researching some family history and a John Olson is shown as living at 323 Cumberland. His niece Emma's wedding certificate shows the ceremony taking place at 321 N. Cumberland.

Wow I just ran across this thread again after a long time. I not a paid up member of Ancestry very often so I don't always check it. I hope some of those participating in it are still monitoring this. I'm really intrigued by Robert Ciponi's comments that his G-Grandfather Ralph Ciponi operated a barber shop on the corner of Egan and Cumberland. Do you happen to know which corner the barber shop was on? My G-Grandfather Olof Olson's house was on the north side of Egan and the lake-side of Cumberland. There is a unused commercial building currently on that location according to Google Streetview. Olof Olson, who's name in Sweden was Olof Gustaf Tjustman arrived with his wife Maria Olsdotter and daughters Esther Paulina and Emma Maria in 1904. He was a carpenter and built the house at 321 Cumberland sometime between then and 1908 when it appears on a fire insurance map that I got from the library. Olof and Maria immigrated to Canada and specifically to Port Arthur because Maria's brother Sven John Olsson had immigrated first to the USA in 1891 and then to Canada. He encouraged them to come. The story in Sweden is very long but involves Maria Olsdotter's sisters and their families all emigrating probably because they were Baptists who had a difficult time in a Lutheran country. Maria's sisters and their families also came to Port Arthur but eventually moved on, to Preston, Washington, a town built by a Swedish Baptist for Swedish Baptists. Olof and Maria stayed in Port Arthur as did Maria's brother Sven Johan. Now here's the magic part that makes it so much fun to research immigrants' true backgrounds: all these people took on different names once they arrived in Canada, not uncommon for immigrants who wanted to fit in. Olof Tjustman became Olof Olson although he was also called George (presumably related to his middle name Gustaf). Maria became Mary and her brother Sven Johan became John Olson. Next door to the Olson's at 323 Cumberland lived a widow named Mary (Maria) Anderson. I believe her husband was Gurt (Gustavus) Anderson who was killed by a dynamite explosion, but I have no documentation for this, just supposition. Mary Anderson lived at 323 with two of her children and she rented rooms to five lodgers, all of Swedish descent. One of those was a young man named Joel Englebert Englund, who married Emma Olson. They had a daughter and moved to the Swedish Baptist colony in Preston, Washington where they had a second daughter. John Olson married the widow Mary Anderson in 1912 and they settled in Kenora. Sorry that this is so lengthy but some of you may want the information. I also have the usual birth, marriage, death dates for just about everyone so if anyone wants more information I have plenty. But I still would like to know about the barbershop. I hope Robert is still monitoring this.

I forgot that I have a photo of Ralph Ciponi standing out on Cumberland Avenue. It's a bit beat up though.

Hello so glad to see your response. I hope Rob sees this too. Seeing the picture I know exactly where it is. You may be interested to hear that it is still a barber shop.

Hi Kim, I'm still confused. The Google Streetview link sends me to a barber shop in the 400 block of Cumberland, on the other side and about 4 blocks away from 321 Cumberland. Are you saying that it moved to the 400 block from 321?

P.S. I may not respond for a couple of weeks unless it's today.
