Would anyone know about a cemetery that was discovered near Coniston by children and restored in recent years. I heard that the city council had a plaque erected to mark the site. I was told my grandmother was buried in Coniston or Sudbury and thought she might be buried there. Her name was Marguerite Halverson and she died in 1921. The funeral was handled by Leclair Funeral Home.

Hi Murray,
Thank you for the information on the link. Look forward to seeing the addition.

I also would like to thank you for the information you recently provided me for contacting the City of Sudbury Cemeteries. Oddly not only doesn't she have a headstone, she doesn't show up anywhere in their records. Yet she does show up in the records of the Leclair Funeral Home in Sudbury. I have now sent away for the death certificate info from the province. Hopefully that will provide me with a clue as to where she is buried.

But it was your email that motivated me to finally get going on this family mystery of where my grandmother's burial place is located.
Thanks,
Jim

Even if your ancestor's name is not on the plaque, it doesn't necessarily meant s/he was not buried there. The memorial stone is not comprehensive - the inscriptions reflect only the names that could be found, not everyone ever interred in the cemetery. My aunt, Olga Chmara, was buried there (two separate archival documents name the Coniston cemetery) but her name is not on the marker.

I asked the municipal department in charge of cemeteries what could be done to remedy the overisight. There is no possibility of getting her name added to the bronze plaque, however, I was told that because of the vandalism on the stone, the maker was expected to take the stone back to the studio to repair the damage, at which point my aunt's name could be inscribed on the granite. I did make the request, but it's not clear when the stone would be repaired.

My suggestion would be to dig up death certificates, hospital death and church funeral records, which will be most likely to indicate place of burial.

If you can find proof there that your family member was interred but has been left off the plaque, it's still possible to have the name inscribed in the granite.

Our family left a memorial of our own there (see attached). I hope it has survived the vandals and the elements. For now, it's all we have.

Hi,
Thank you for the post. I still haven't been able to find my grand-mother's place of burial.I have found the funeral home identifcation record and it states she was buried in Sudbury. After contacting the Greater Cemetery Services a couple of times they have no record of her in Sudbury. I know that she lived in Coniston in 1921 at the time of death. I hadn't thought about the church record. I know her religion and I will see what kind of luck I have in finding the Catholic church in Coniston or Sudbury that may have the record of where she was buried. Thanks again for sparking my interest.

Try the Garson cemetery. Although there is no headstone for her there there are a number of related Halversons buried in the older section of the cemetery which may suggest that an early burial took place. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~murrayp/su...
Her Ontario death record indicates that she died of colon and liver cancer and that an operation occurred about two months before death. It does list Leclair as the undertaker.

Although on second glance the death certificate does specify Sudbury. On the same page is another deceased record that specifies a Coniston burial so I don't she was buried in Coniston. In the early days there was a cemetery in what is now downtown Sudbury. The graves were all removed and relocated to Lasalle cemetery quite a number of years ago.

I have located the church record for Margaret (Hearn) Halverson. She was incorrectly listed as Margaret Fitzgerald wife of Patrick Halverson. The records asks for her maiden name and incorrectly specifies her mother's maiden name. Her funeral was at St. Anne in Sudbury Dec 12th. She was probably originally buried at the old St. Anne cemetery which was originally located near the church and which was relocated to Lasalle Blvd. There is a St. Anne section in the Lasalle cemetery.
