Re: Looking for Decendants of John Fusee

I am attaching John Fusee's Last Will and Testament, Probate Record and Estate Record (the actual Will is file #10). I obtained this from the Archives of Ontario:

Microfilm #: GS1, 893
Document #: 898
Doc date: 3 September 1874

From what I can gather the Last Will and Testament mentions the following family members:

John Fusee
William Fusee
Sarah
John Sidney
James (Hellind? - I need help understanding the writing)
Joseph
Mary Elizabeth
Sarah Margaret
Robert
Charles Hiraim

The will states if he was survived by his wife that he was leaving money (in a savings bond) for his son William which would first go to his wife until she died. This is leading me to the conclusion that there may be a Last Will & Testament and likely probate and estate records for his wife (otherwise how could William claim the money?). However I cannot find her probate, estate and Last Will & Testament in the Archives. I searched both indexes for Durham and Simcoe Counties, 1904-1914 search period. The archivist suggested Simcoe because the will can be probated anywhere and is often in the same location as where the spouse died. The archivist also stated wills can be probated many years after the time of death, so I did a 10 year search to start.

Couple of questions to all of you researching this line:

I am wondering if anyone off hand knows where William was living in 1904? My intention is to next look to see if the will was probated in the county where he resided.

Regarding John Fusee's parents, the archivist suggested checking the death registry. I am wondering if anyone has already done this? I don't know if this is the same as any death records that are currently available online?

I can email pdfs of these images if anyone wants to send me a message with their email address. PDFs are easier to read but not supported by ancestry.com

Sincerely,

Andrew

Hi Simba,

They do not have any Coswell Smith's in this book. I have compiled the Smith's who have married Campbell's as it seems back then one family seemed to marry the brother or sister of the same family another sibling was married too. So maybe you can research them to find any info.

Mathew Smith to Sally Campbell md Sept 10 1832 by Rev Hugh Urquhart,Minister of congregation in conecion witth the Church of Scotland in the town of Cornwall. Witness Daniel and Robert Campbell.

These names are the only names I found that could be a match. Im sorry I couldnt help more. Good luck.

Hi:

I'm not sure if this is helpful, but she is shown in the Woodlands East Cemetery transcript done by Hydro in the 1950s as follows:

Allan Grant - d. 1943
Amanda A. Adams - d. 1858 (I think this should be b. 1858, d. 1932 - see below)
Sarah Mina Empey Adams - d. 1942

The three graves are listed together in the transcript, which shows only dates of death.

It appears that the stone was moved to St. Lawrence Valley Union Cemetery (or a new one was made) when the area was flooded for the Seaway. See: http://cornwallroots.info/cms/cornwall/tombstones/Tombstones...

I am not related to this family.
If you happen to visit the Lost Villages Museum, I just sent them some photos that I found in my grandmothers album of the St Lawrence while drained. They were taken in Aug 1958 and some of the photos show the water coming in and also of the original Hwy 2, then flooded. I had never heard of the Lost Villages until I found those photos and did a little research.
My ancestors lived in Gallingertown, Johnstown NY, Corwall Ontario, and surrounding areas.

Hi Nascar ! I believe the info that Satch gave you is correct . Rachel Snetsinger and Duncan Grant are my greatgrandparents . Since they married in 1875 , it is reasonable that they witnessed Emma's marriage a year earlier . I could not email you directly , but if you care to chat . email jyoung-young@hotmail.com .

Unfortunately the only reference I have to Alberta's marriage to Anthony is probably the same one you have seen on line, so I really don't know how you could pursue this further. As I said in my previous post I really only ever spent the time searching down the line that lead to my dad. Sorry I am no further help, and good luck with your search. Although it is a bit of difference between Russel and Rusnel I do think the coincidence is uncanny, and I would think your assumption is probably correct. If Alberta was your G.G.G.Grandmother I guess that means we had the same G.G.G.G.Grandparents (John Franklin Raymond and Sarax Cox), so, nice to meet you, vitually anyway.

Cheers,

Thanks for your quick reply. My main interest lies with "Alberta married Anthony Russel". My g.g.grandfather was born "Anthony Rossignol" in Quebec in 1793. His father moved the family to Kingston,Ontario where he died of drowning in 1811. Anthony and his brothers changed their name to Rusnel or Rushnel. Anthony eventually further changed his name to Nightingale which is the English translation for the French Rossignol. I wonder if Alberta's husband's name was actually Anthony Rusnel, not Russel....a pretty easy transcription error. Also, I believe this wedding took place very near Kingston where my g.g.grandfather lived. My g. grandfather, Anthony's son, (after the family immigrated to Michigan in 1855) enlisted in the Union Army in 1861 and deserted a week after being mustered in. He disappeared for two years and then he reenlisted in the Union Cavalry in 1863 under the alias William H. Raymond. My own grandmother told me that he used his mother's maiden name when he reenlisted. A further piece of circumstantial evidence is that William H. (Nightingale) Raymond reenlisted in Lexington, MI which is only 10 miles, or so, from Port Sanilac where Alberta's brother Oliver and his family were living. There's a possibility that William was living with his Uncle Oliver while he was lying low for those two years. The whole key here is if the Russel name was in fact Rusnel. If I can in some way verify that...I could unlock a complete side of my ancestry that has eluded me to this point. Another coincidence: One of the members of the Anthony Nightingale household in 1851 is a "John Nelson" Nightingale. Any suggestions on how I might go about pursuing the Russel/Rusnel question? Thanks for any help you can provide. Shadrd

Based on the information that I have the Raymond family lived on both Barnhart Island, and Sheiks Island, starting around 1800. It was after the war of 1812 that the border between then British North America, and the United States was established between the two Islands, deviding the family. Originally two Raymond's, Solomon, and William were granted 200 acres each on Sheiks Island, after marrying Sophia and Margaret Mattice (daughters of UEL John Mattice); however, other accounts suggest that they leased this land from the St. Regis Mohawks that had jurisdiction over the islands in that part of the St. Lawrence through treaty rights. Not sure which is accurate but I tend to believe the latter as Solomon's oldest two son's were each willed half of his land provided they paid the leashold fees required to the Band of St. Regis Mohawks. Either way, records suggest that brothers and possibly their parents(John Fraklin Raymond and Sarah Cox)occupied portions of Barnhart Island at about the same time, arriving most recently from northern Vermont. Based on future census data, and maps of Cornwall township in areound 1870, their were four Raymond farms on Sheiks island, each approximately 100 acres, so I assume that William Raymond also willed his land to two sons, though this is just speculation. Their is also record of Solomon buying several farms in Cornwall Township and Osnabruck Township and then willing this to other sons, and then further records of Levi Raymond (one of Solomon's younger sons, who did not inheret any land), buying a farm near Newington (in Osnabruck). Levi was the first to register a farm in this area, and the road it was on bears the name Raymond Road, to this day. Their is a private graveyard on Raymond Road that reportadle includes the remains of Levi, his wife Anna Wright, and several decendents. Levi was my G-G Grandfather, his youngest son John Nelson Raymond moved to Williamstown (in Glengarry County) with his kids in tow, where my grandfather was raised and my father born.

Not sure if this helps any, but that's the information that I have, only some of which can be verified.

One interesting point though, the headstone of Solomon Raymond and his wife Sophia Mattice from the family burial plot on Sheiks Island is reportadly one of several that was moved to Upper Canada Village when the Seawy was constructed and Sheiks Island was flooded.

I don't know that any information I have is any more verifiable then anything you may have, but according to my records Solomon had 6 sisters, Anne, Alberta, Drusilla, Almira, Miranda, and Sarah. Of these it would appear that Sarah married George Mattice (I assume a brother to Solomon's wife Sofia), Miranda married Frederick Ault, Almira married John Presley, Alberta married Anthony Russel, and Anne and Drusilla either did not wed, or I have no record of it. Not sure if that helps at all, and unfortunately, since I was primarily concerned with the line that led to my dad, I have not followed this any further. I would nevertheless be interested to know what you do, to try and fill out the tree. Cheers,

I read with great interest the 2009 posting of davidraymond concerning the Raymond brothers who moved to Shieks Island about 1800. I have accumulated some circumstantial evidence that indicates my g.g.grandfather may have married one of the daughters of John and Sarah (Cox) Raymond. It would be very meaningful to be able to verify this marriage. Can anyone help?

Hi,

I have a pdf copy of the transcripts you mention. I first looked in Woodlands East, but there were no Smiths. Then, I tried a few other cemeteries in the vicinity. I found the Smiths in Woodlands West Cemetery in Farran's Point. Here is what I found:

James Smith - Year Deceased - 1892
Elizabeth Campbell Smith - 1899
Caswell Smith - 1890
Nancy Campbell Smith - 1891
Emma Smith - 1912
John Smith - 1934
Alice Empey Smith - 1937

The documents do not show the dates of birth, only death. I originally found these transcripts on the Internet, but I can no longer access them. Fortunately, I kept copies.

If you want to browse through the stones at Pioneer Memorial at Upper Canada Village, there is a site that has photos of all the stones in the walls.

Go to: www.cornwallroots.info
- choose "Tombstones" on main page
- under "County" select "Dundas"
- scroll down to "The Lost Villages"

There are photos of the 299 stones embedded in the walls.

Hope this helps.
Kathryn

Turns out he was born in Canada in 1813 - probably within 2 years of Charles (or Jno. Fusee). He later moved to Michigan. I'm going to attempt to locate some details regarding his birth place and year which I suspect will be in modern Quebec or Ontario.

Also I did some searches on canadacollections.gc.ca regarding land claims for anyone under "fu*" but did not find anything.

I have not found any online reference to the book I heard about.

I would check with the "Lost Village Museum" just outside Ingleside. I had conversations with them last summer and someone connected me with a gentleman who had a copy of Ont Hydros' book. This book kept accurate records of when and where graves were re located when the sea way was being created. They are closed for the winter BUT you can contact them through a web site.
SL

1871 canada census you will find:
Living in Stormont County and Osnabruck Township
Caswell Smith B: USA married age 52 German Tailor
Nancy Smith wife age 51 B: Ontario
Christine daughter age 28 B: Ontario
James son age 24 B: Ontario Taylor
EliSabeth daughter age 21 B: Ontario
John son age 18 B: Ontario

1891 canada censusStormont County Osnabruck Township
NOTE: Elizabeth and John are gone but James, his wife and son are living with Caswell and Nancy as well as a Campbell who is probably Nancy's widowed sister-in-law.
IT READS:
Caswell Smith age 72 USA
Nancy Smith age 68 Ontario
scroll down the page to:
James Smith age 33 Ontario
Emma Smith age 24 Ontario
James Smith age 4 Ontario
Elizabeth Campbell age 70

I could not find them in the 1852 census and I did not try the 1891 Census but James and John would be there.
As for their burial ground location that will be tougher.Best way to find that is to get a list of all the cemeteries in the counties of Dundas and Stormont. Then you would have to visit each to look for them . THEY ARE NOT ON THE WEBSITE FIND A GRAVE. All that means is noone has taken the time to add them, Hundreds of thousands of volunteers work doing that but often insignificant cemeteries get little attention and people who are doing the volunteer work often focus on their own ancestors you know what I'm saying.
Are you from Canada or USA? I expect to go grave hunting this summer in the same area where your Caswell and Nancy should be. If I find them I will take a photo and put them on Find A Grave website so you can visit them often LOL

I assume one reason could be that many of my ancestors never learned to read or write (my Grandfather I know was one of such people) & often guessed at the spelling. Another reason is that the people who filled out B-M-D certificates & Census Takers etc. may have also guessed at the spelling of Surnames.
I am looking for several names, but the most "important" for me right now is Caswell Smith who died in 1890, and his wife Nancy Campbell Smith who died in 1891.

Any information you have would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi ELLinSpain,

Great thought. I had already located their marriage registration but since George died in July 1900 and the census was 9 months after his death there would be a chance that Beatrice might be staying with George's parents. No
such luck though. As well she is not with any of George's siblings either. She simply disappears. This is why I was wondering about a obituary. There may have been some mention there of her.

Thanks for your help !

What are the names of the persons you are interested in finding. I may be able to help. I lived in the lost village of Farran's Point until I was 12 and it along with several other towns were flooded. I have 2 living siblings who attended Wales High School as well.
